I'm fairly new to machine embroidery. I'd heard horror stories about working with metallic threads. A few years ago, I tried to stitch a decorative stitch on my regular sewing machine and it was a disaster. I found a Christmas panel scene that I badly wanted to do and decided it was time to get over it. I ordered this Simthread set of 21 colors. First of all it arrived very quickly. Gorgeous colors! Great price. I liked that they included a card with suggestions on how to stitch with metallics. I followed them all. Topstitch needle, thread stand, thread net (included!) and slower speed. They also suggested dropping tension to 1. I started out at 1 and changed tension until I arrived at what I thought was a good tension. That's the little pink/green rose. The next two photos are details of the Christmas panel using the gold and the blue for the sky. The picture doesn't do it justice; it's so pretty! An iridescent, not a flat blue. I have had no jams or thread breaks at all. Love the effect! Can't wait to try the variegated one! Love it!

I wanted to add this part to my review as an encouragement to those who might be going through the same frustration I had starting out with metallic thread. As I started stitching out on my machine, the colors popped and were even more beautiful on fabric then they were fresh out of the box. Unfortunately, I was having breaking and shredding ever few stitches. I was using a thread stand set behind my machine. I changed designs, fabric, stabilizer, sewers aid on the thread to reduce friction. I even switched out needles in case I had a bad needle right out of the box.Nothing changed, I continued to get breaks and shredding. I moved my thread to the floor before using a box with a pencil shoved through it to allow the spool of thread to roll of instead of coiling off as it did on my thread stand (which helped just enough to keep me fighting this war of the learning curve using metallics).I even tore into my machine hunting for an illusive thread that might be causing the problem. Nothing! No change! Uhg. This thread was too beautiful to give up on. At the last thread of my sanity, I reached out to a group of embroiderers familiar with simthread metalics and received a lot of helpful feedback. Some suggested turning the speed down on my machine (I never used full speed on my machine, so that wasn’t the issue). It wasn’t until 0ne person suggested changing the tension on my Brother PE770 to -4. NEGATIVE 4!!! What! Are you crazy? I’ve always been told my other embroiders to NEVER, EVER CHANGE TENSION! But I researched tension on my machine. Geez, honestly, I didn’t even know my machine had a tension setting because you’re not supposed to change it anyway, right? Well, after debating weather or not this thread was worth it (and I thought it was) I went ahead and did THE UNTHINKABLE! And guess what… yup, you guessed it. SUCCESS!!!! I still had a couple of breaks (especially with the color that I hadn’t used sewers aid on) but the few breaks I had were nothing, a drop during the storm, compared to what I had experienced for almost 7 hours prior.The design that was using was also pretty dense with wide satin stitches. Here is a picture of my successful test stitch that has made all my efforts and growth through this learning curve worth it. I followed up with a pair of FSL earrings. And celtic horse on an old shirt.

The set came in a box. Each spool individually wrapped with a plastic cover. Loved the colors. Easy to sew with on a sewing machine.

I purchased both sets of this metallic thread. The price is cheap compared to some other brands. But the thread doesn't feed through my embroidery machine (Husqvarna Viking Epic 2) as well as other, more expensive metallic thread. I used this thread on embroidery designs called Boho Quilt from the Anita Goodesign website. Most of the embroidery was done with three different brands of rayon and polyester embroidery thread. Because using metallic thread can be challenging, the metallic thread was used to "highlight" the other embroidery work. I have used a high end metallic thread (only shown on the butterfly antenna) that didn't require much adjustment on my part. This thread on the other hand, needed a bit more assistance getting it to feed properly and not break. What seemed to help: 1. Follow the recommended instructions provided with the spools. 2. Lower the thread tension to about 20 percent used for regular thread. I use 40 or 50 tension for regular embroidery thread, 10 for this thread seemed to work best on my machine. 3. Use a larger top stitch or metallic needle!!! 4. Netting seemed to increase the tension on the thread, it broke more often. However, without the netting, I had to hand feed the thread, straighten it as it twisted off of the spool. Be careful not to pull on the thread going into the machine. 5. Sprayed the thread spool with dry silicone spray every 300 to 500 stitches. Do this outside, NOT next to your sewing machine. 6. Keep the stitching length down to about 500 or less stitches. 7. Turn your machine speed as slow as it will go, that aleviated some of the issues. The pictures show the thread spools next to where they were used. It is a little difficult to tell in the pictures but the metallic thread has more of a shine than the other threads (polyester and rayon). Here is where the thread was used: Next to the pink flower, the purple metallic thread was used on the small veins eminating from the center of the flower. Around the center, the orange metallic thread was also used. The peach and orange colored flower has the orange thread in the center only. Although there were thousands of stitches and multiple layers, feeding the thread, using a metallic needle, and running the machine slowly, the thread only broke once. On the red fabric, the light blue/teal was used along the edge of the purple stripe. The thread broke at least eight times (I lost count) regardless of what I did. The red and pink flowers were highlighted with the red metallic thread. The flowers were two colors BEFORE adding the metallic highlights, lighter and darker with yellow/orange centers. The darker blue in the butterfly wings is the blue metallic thread. The silver antenna were sewn with another brand of silver metallic thread. The yellow flowers have dark rose metallic thread used in the small veins eminating from the center of the flower. The center is regular thread. Hope this helps you make your decision on whether to buy or not.

I just used some of these threads in a current wall quilt I am making. I am very impressed with how easy they are to work with. The colors are bright and fun. One caution to using them, tho. Make sure you have a Topstitch metallic needle in your machine when sewing with these metallics. The eye of a Topstitch is larger and designed so the thread does not shred during use. I had forgotten to change my needle when I started with my 1st metallic spool. Things were fine for a while but when I changed to one of the red metallics, the thread did not like my regular needle. It began shredding immediately and I realized my mistake. When installed, the Topstitch needle worked beautifully for the rest of the time. Another point to remember: when using metallic thread, slower is better. Fast stitching will create continous problems and your work will suffer. These colors are marvelous and I am eager to start another piece so I can use more of the threads.

I love the colors, they are so vibrant and look much shinier in person than they do on my pictures. I sewed with my Brother PR650 six needle. I used a 90/14 Top Stitch needle, which has a longer eye and wider groove and sewed at 500 spm. I didn't change my tension or use the thread nets. I tried to use a thread net but it was too tight to let my thread come off the spool. (could be I didn't put it on right) When doing the first design of the shoe I used my regular embroidery needle and had a couple of breaks. After changing to the Top Stitch needle, as recommended, I only had one break. I couldn't wait to do some free standing lace earrings. They sewed out beautifully, I used earring patterns from Sonia Showalter Designs. They look so much better than the ones I have done with regular embroidery thread. I will be using Simthread's Metallic Thread from now on for my FSL earrings. It did not tangle, nest or shred which is a big plus. Looking forward to making cards with my metallic thread. I received my 10 essential colours netalic pack this week and have just stitched this Purple Poodle in the netalic thread. It finshed with amazing thread quality and not 1 thread break. I will definately buy more Simthread

All of my machine embroidery threads are Simthread. So when these new style metallic threads came to the UK I had to add them to my ever growing collection containing plain, variegated, metallic and glow in the dark. Right from opening the box and removing the sleeves I was impressed with the colour tones and the shine and super excited to give them a try and test just how good the new Japanese manufacturing technology was. The first test I did was just a plain wrap around my fingers and pull, just to see how strong it is and while not as strong as the normal threads (as you'd expect) they are stronger than the old style metallic threads. I'm not able to reduce the speed of my machine so the 3 designs I tested these threads out on where completely at the feet of the embroidery gods and goddesses. I did changed the needle to a top stitch needle (as recommended). I left alone my top and bottom tension and I placed the spool on a triple thread stand that stands to the side of my machine. Next test was to stitch out the balloons (I tried to upload the other videos of this but it kept failing). I must admit I did stay with my machine as I expected at least 1 snap somewhere in the design but no, nothing, no snaps, shredding or snagging. Perfect. I then went on to stitch out the bohemian draped branch and crescent moon. The one video I was permitted to upload is of part of the draped branch being stitched at full speed and again no snapped or shredded thread, like you do get with some metallic threads, and I'm confident that I could walk away from my machine while it's stitching and return knowing that it would complete that section of a design with no problems. Overall I am really impressed with this box of 10 metallic threads and will definitely be adding more to my collection.
