I have a curious cat who likes to scratch and climb on things. Will he pop the ball or is it sturdy enough to withstand cats?

Not Cat friendly. It can take abuse but if you have an active cat with sharp claws it's only a matter of time. With that said if you can store the ball away you'll be okay. I was able to keep mine in my tiny room space when I was in Afghanistan with no issues.
