I am reviewing both the 24-port rackmountable switch, as well as the 5-port desktop switch. These are inherently very different products. TP-LINK TL-SG1024D 10/100/1000Mbps 24-Port Gigabit 13-inch Rackmountable Switch, 48Gbps Capacity The rackmount switch is very large for a desktop model, I highly recommend you use it in a rackmount configuration as it is intended. The power cord connector is thick and sticks out at the back of the unit. All of the Cat 5/6 cables connect at the front, making it cumbersome to mount on a desktop configuration. It also produces quite a bit of heat and was registering much more power draw than the 5-port switch. The rackmounted switch uses 10W of battery just standing by with no network activity. There are no amber LEDs. Instead, there's an extra LED that indicates a 1000 Mbps connection. So for the 10/100 connections, that LED simply won't light up. I found the indicators to be a tad confusing at first, but they present all the pertinent info you need. Again, this is overkill for most desktop/home applications. Overall: 5/5 stars. TP Link TLSG1005D 5 port Gigabit switch This is an inexpensive unmanaged switch with 5 Gigabit ports. I see a lot of complaints about the use of single color LEDs for all of the ports. Honestly, I get freaked out if I see amber instead of green because I am used to the amber signifying a 10 Mbps connection instead of 100 Mbps. So on my Netgear JNR3210 and D-Link gigabit switch, 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps connections all show up as amber. I only have a handful of systems with Gigabit NICs, so the amber lights throw me off. The TP Link shows green regardless of the connection, and that is fine. I also tucked the TP Link inside my entertainment cabinet with my media center PC and Xbox 360, so I don't really look at the LEDs. Overall: 5/5 stars, efficient, inexpensive, and excellent performance. It's an unmanaged switch so it isn't rocket science. It doesn't come with a Cat 5E cable though, but at least the AC adapter is fairly compact.

I wanted to hard-wire the network for my home theater setup. Most notably, an Xbox 360 (100Mbit), a PS3 (1000Mbit), an AppleTV 3rd gen (100Mbit), and the television itself (LN52B630, unsure about speed). Previous, I had the Xbox plugged in directly to my Airport Extreme over CAT5e, and used the wireless on the PS3/AppleTV. However, I wanted to hard-wire the AppleTV for airplay mirroring to speed things up a bit. And if I was going to split the one gigabit connection into more than one, I figure I might as well wire up everything, and a 5 port gigabit switch was exactly what I needed. Looking around Amazon, this guy had really top notch reviews. Online research showed NewEgg reviewers giving this little guy glowing reviews, with a few nags here and there. There are a few neat hacks people have done to make this switch even more useful, but I won't get into those. I figured for $20, this little guy should do the trick. Plus, Amazon has a great return policy for faulty products, so why not give it a try. I've been burned by high quality names dying out on me for no good reason, so I figured I'd give this little guy a go. So far, fantastic! I wasn't able to do a very good test to max out the line speed, but the speed did not change between no switch and the switch over the same wire. I checked all ports and they all worked at 1000BaseT just fine, and latency was consistent across all ports. Also, I confirmed that mixed modes caused no issues, as noted by my above devices. Of the 5 ports, 2 are gigabit (uplink to the Airport Extreme and the PS3), and the AppleTV/Xbox are 100Mbit - the TV is most likely 10BaseT, but it may be 100BaseT. Everything is working together flawlessly, though since it's for a home theater setup, it's not being taxed heavily. If it dies on me or if things end up not working out, I will be sure to come back and update this review. But I figured I'd toss my two cents for other people running into my situation.

I have a Small Biz Office (SBO) in my Man Cave, and during some recent remodeling, I updated my audio-visual gear, added a cable box, and brought down an 50 foot Ethernet Cable from my newest Apple Extreme Router. Since I also added a Sony PSP + Roku 3, I found myself running out of Ports, so I ordered this TP-Link 5-Port Desktop Switch. The Pro's - basically 3 main points to make that produced this 4.5-Star rating. This is NOT my usual Technical Review, just wanted to quickly write this, so others can possibly benefit from it. 1. If there is one thing that makes this device so Easy to Use for ANYONE is that it is all Plug and play, it's Automatic connectivity and hassle free. You don't need anything else, you just plug-in and it negotiates, senses, and makes it's own adjustments on Auto Pilot, to Optimize all of your Internet traffic. What could you possibly need? Nothing, Nada, Zero! 2. A Ethernet Device with Green Technology Switch already built-in that powers down all ports when there is no demand. There is nothing else to add or plug in! At a glance, you can See which Ports are currently in use, with small, green blinking (working) lights, while other ones not in use are static. 3. Performance - so far I have been able to send much larger MM files, graphic-intensive files and RAW images, w/o a hitch; however, it's a bit early to really make a sound, objective review this early, so I will only assign it a 4.5 Rating from this perspective, until 6 or 9 months down the road, when it has been properly broken in. This is one of those 'No-Brainer' devices that is extremely EZ to set-up and should be on everyone's Bucket List! Will update in about 6 months, so stay tuned. Thx for stopping by.

Done forget to See my most resent review at the bottem :) Don't buy it if u r going to connect it to a modem(simply a modem, no router feature.) All my reviews are base on when it connects to a modem. So ignore me if u are going to extend some ports for your router. Can't provide internet to more than one device. I connected three PC's and restarted my whole network system again and again, but only one of them(most time port 4) is able to access internet. And for some reason neither of my routers doesn't work when connect to it(instead of connect direct to the modem). Tested from different PCs and there's only one gigabit port, other's are just 100Mbps--which u can tell from the back of it. I wont recommend this to anyone, because it doesn't do the job as it says at all. In the photo attached, You can see only port 4 and 5 are gigabit port, and port 5 is a "in" port. Here's my review after a month of using(After I bought Rt-ac68w ASUS (RT-AC68U) Wireless-AC1900 Dual-Band Gigabit Router ) It works just fine when connected to a router, plug and play, no driver needed. And delivers a gigabit speed. I use this to connect my PC and PS4, works great. So far so good.

Put in two of these switches in my home network to replace two older Linksys 10/100 switches. I planned to buy Linksys switches in the Gigabit rating, but they are a weird shape now, and have no lights on the front! Found these switches priced much less than the Cisco/Linksys line, and they are nice and flat so they can be stacked. They also have power and data lights on the front where they can be seen. Two "T" holes in bottom allowed me to wall mount them using two small round head screws (you provide the screws). Moved large 2 gig movie files from a desktop to the server (Windows Home Server 2011). It takes just moments, and the speed was a steady 800 Mbps!!! This is on a network with about 150 feet of plain old Cat-5 cable and these switches inbetween the desk top PC and the server. Also like the fact that the switch save power by shutting off unused ports, and varies voltage on the line based on cable length. I have the Linksys EA2700 10/100/1000 router and it works just fine with the TP-Link switches. The switches also support 15K Jumbo Frame which is nice for large file transfers. And they are cool to the touch. I'm very happy with the TD-Link switches. Update: When traffic is light on the network, I am getting full 1Gbps transfer speeds between desktop and server. The desktop has two of these TP-Link switches, the router, and about 150 feet of cat-5 cable between it and the server it talks to. Not bad in my book. When the kids start streaming video off the internet, the non-internet data slows down, although this is probably more a function of the router slowing down under load than the switch because the streaming video is done wireless. Udate: Been 8 months and now have two of these switches working flawlessly. Also added the TP-link printer server to the network and it is working flawlessly also.

This is a simple unmanaged switch with gigabit throughput. The price is competitive with other brands. I have it in use over 6 months with great reliability. For those of you not too computer networking savvy, think of this similar to a multi-outlet extension cord for your home computer network. Use it to connect multiple internet-ready devices to your cable/internet service router or your AT&T U-verse router or one of the DVR or TV set-top boxes. Special note to U-verse users: The set top DVR box or even the non-DVR TV set-top box have an ethernet port in the back. You can use this to connect wired-internet capable devices like your Blu-Ray player, DVD Player, Roku player, Smart TV, etc, and get reliable wired-internet connections. This is a way to extend wired-internet to rooms where you have a set-top box or DVR but not the same room as the U-verse gateway. Why would you want to do this? Well, I don't know about you but the wireless signal in my U-verse home setup isn't particularly reliable. I can be watching NetFlix for example, and the wireless signal weakens and then NetFlix pauses and sometimes throttles down to a less-stellar image. That won't happen on a wired connection. (Sure, your U-verse signal into the home may weaken but that's not what I'm talking about.). U-verse users, try this to connect multiple internet enabled devices in your home entertainment system instead of using wireless. Besides this unit, you'll need Cat 6 Ethernet cables. Just look these up on Amazon and they have good deals. 6-foot lengths should work well if the U-verse set-top box and the Blu-Ray, Smart TV, etc are all in the same entertainment center furniture. I don't know if Cable-TV set-top boxes let you connect an ethernet cable to do this, but if they do, it could help you too.

5/16/18 I bought this because I did not want to send 4 ethernet cables from my router to my room for my PC, xbox ETC. I looked for a fast gigabit switch and ultimately decided on this on. What got me buying this one was its price and because it looked nice. So I bought it and I'm happy to say I'm not disappointed! It was really simple to use just plug in the cable to router on one port and plug your other ethernet cables in the others and your done! No assembly software or anything like that. I mounted mine on the wall with the connectors facing up so I can see the activity lights. (and yes despite what the picture shows it does have activity lights they are on the ports themselves) Very nice little device, would recommend, happy I bought it. 2/16/19 Well now its been a full year and it is still going! Still on the wall where I left and and blinking away. I actually forget this thing is there until I end up cleaning, just shows you how well it works. ;)

I purchased this gigabit switch for my home network because I do a lot of file transfers and backups with a couple of home servers, as well as stream 1080p video from my NAS (network attached storage) to my home-theater PC in the living room. I was tired of the slow 100Mbps transfer speeds from my Cisco (more like Linksys) router when backing up data for my Time Machine, or after ripping a BluRay to send the data to my 12TB NAS, so I knew that I needed Gigabit but didn't want to pay a lot for it. I originally looked at purchasing a new wireless router with gigabit ports, but the prices were still high and my current router works fine, it's just a little slow for the wired up devices. I read that this switch is "Green" as far as it doesn't use a lot of energy and this means less heat as well as less energy consumption so it was really a win/win situation. When I got the package, it came with the usual documentation, power supply, and the switch itself. I installed the switch and hooked it up to my router's output as well as the Cat6 cable from my server, home-theater PC, and a line going to my MacBook Pro. I had instant connectivity and everything works swimmingly. I can pull gigabytes worth of info off the server in a fraction of the old times. The switch runs very cool, barely warmer than room temperature in my living room. I am very happy with this switch, and have nothing but good things to say about it. I am glad I went with this instead of a "well-known" brand that seem to have a lot of issues.

Ein wirklich tolles Gerät. Da dies mein erster Switch war, konnte ich trotz meiner leichten Netzwerkkenntnisse alles direkt zum laufen bringen. Lan-Kabel rein, fertig. Auch wenn ich nur 2 Ports benötigte, habe ich mich für diesen Switch entschieden. Vorallem, da TP-Link eine Marke ist, von der ich Qualität erwarte, auch wenn der Preis nicht unbedingt hoch ist und für den Fall, falls man doch noch den ein oder anderen Port benötigt. Ich wurde in keiner Weise enttäuscht. Anzumerken ist jedoch, das der Switch ziemlich leicht ist. Ein schweres und steifes Patchkabel hat keine Probleme damit es zu ziehen oder in die Höhe zu neigen, falls es sich an einer Kante befindet. Das ist aber auch nur eine Kleinigkeit. Der Switch steht, gerade und flach, auf dem Regal und sendet meine Daten an den Router, damit ich diese Rezension schreiben kann. Für diejenigen, die wissen möchten, wie ich das Gerät verwende: Wie bereits erwähnt, verbindet der Switch unseren Router mit zwei Rechnern, die so den Zugang zum Internet erhalten. Mir fällt gerade auf, dass man damit auch ein lokales Netzwerk erstellen kann, um so Zugriff auf die Rechner untereinander zu haben (Beispiel LAN-Partys). Ausprobiert habe ich dies jedoch nicht. Ich sehe aber keine Gründe, warum das nicht funktionieren sollte. Das macht man heutzutage ja auch mit einem Switch (früher haben wir einen Hub benutzt), soweit ich weiß. Ich habe gelesen, dass manche Switches dafür sorgen, dass bei der Geschwindigkeit eingebüßt wird. Kleines Gegenbeispiel: Ich habe Planetside 2 in einem halben Tag komplett heruntergeladen (8,8 GB). Auch während des Spiels spühre ich keine Verzögerungen seitens der Internetverbindung. Lediglich meine Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit sorgt für Frust. Kleiner Tipp an diejenigen die das Spiel auf hoher Grafikeinstellung spielen: Stellt das Gras ab, die gegnerischen Schweine kann man sonst kaum sehen. :P Fazit: Wie auch in der Rezension, gibt es hier nicht viel zu sagen. Hierbei handelt es sich um ein Top-Produkt, das das tut, was man von ihm erwartet. So muss das sein!

I bought this to set up a wired network for my smart TV, Blu Ray Player & games console. My cable router is on other corner of the living room so got this & a 10m Cat6 cable to hook up & works great. Switch is just that, no frills, no fuss, no unecessary buttons of anything actually on it, just plug in & play set up. LED lights on front shows power on, & any live connections , & blinking indicates data transfer. I think if your gonna get one of these Gigabit switches, go for a decent Cat6 ethernet cable for the router connection & also for the connections to your equipment. Smart TV apps like bbc Iplayer, 4OD etc load up much quicker & no loss of signal like when using wireless, great! All in all a very good buy & recommended.
