Comprehensive Review of the Tapo C310 Outdoor Security Camera
Pros: 1 - High-Quality Imaging: Offers 2K resolution with impressive low-light color night vision, delivering clear footage at an affordable price point. 2 - Ample Storage: Supports up to 512GB of onboard storage via microSD card, providing extensive recording capacity without relying on cloud services. 3 - Ethernet Connectivity: Unique to the C300 series, the Ethernet option ensures stable and fast connections, a rare feature in this price range. 4 - Easy Installation: Simple setup process—add the camera to your system, insert a microSD card, and mount it with minimal hassle. 5 - Scheduled Rebooting: Allows automated reboots to maintain optimal performance over time. 6 - RTSP Support: Enables offloading of recordings to a self-hosted NVR, a feature absent in TP-Link’s battery-powered cameras to preserve battery life. 7 - Minimal Latency: Zero lag when using Ethernet; only minor lag on wireless connections, ensuring smooth real-time viewing. 8 - Choices of resolution. 720P, 1080P and 2K. Cons: 1 - No Detection Tagging: Lacks detection tagging (e.g., person, vehicle), a feature available in the cheaper Tapo C120 model. 2 - Basic Support: Customer support is minimal, though this aligns with expectations for a budget-friendly consumer product. 3 - No WPA3 Security: Only supports WPA/WPA2, missing the more secure WPA3 standard for Wi-Fi encryption. Additional Notes: Some reviewers lament the absence of Power over Ethernet (PoE) in TP-Link’s consumer cameras, though PoE is available in their premium Enterprise models. This can be addressed with an affordable PoE splitter (5mm x 2.5mm barrel connector). Others report lens fogging in high-humidity environments after prolonged exposure. To mitigate this, consider a Pelco climate-controlled dome or indoor placement, as I do. Complaints about pixelization during digital zoom are common but stem from unrealistic expectations. Digital zoom merely magnifies pixels, unlike optical zoom. For better detail, opt for cameras with narrower fields of view or position the C310 to keep key areas centered, where pixel density is highest. Wide-angle lenses coupled with digital zoom inherently involve trade-offs in detail. This is my tenth Tapo camera, and for the price, the C310’s quality, functionality, and reliability are unmatched. TP-Link, a well-established networking specialist, even offers unique features like 3D floor plan integration for their smart home ecosystem. I also manage three TP-Link Omada SDN sites, and while TP-Link isn’t flawless, the value they deliver at this price point is exceptional. I've tried many name brands and no-name brands. I can't name another brand that matches this combination of affordability and advanced features Tapo by TP-Link offers. People just have to be realistic with what they spent and what they received.

Hard to beat, for the price
These camera’s are hard to beat for the price. They are rugged, and just continue to work if installed right. There are other reviews with samples of the image quality - it’s what you’d expect for $30, probably a little better even. Decent, 2k image with night vision. I’m not going to focus on this as much as a couple of other aspects of this product that I was pleasantly surprised by after install. These are: The app’s simplicity and streamlined functionality, and the actual camera hardware being compatible with almost every ip camera configuration standard. The app is surprisingly simple yet useful using the camera’s local micro sd card storage, and can be used locally on the LAN without any subscription, and does not have any blocked features or limited functionality when opting out of the optional cloud subscription. This is much more of a bonus than I had expected. I hadn’t even expected to use the app at all after setup. Which isn’t necessary after the initial setup, which includes paring the camera with your tp-link ID. Once done, you can set up what they call a “camera account”, which is in essence setting the camera’s local address for use with third party software and NVR’s via ONVIF (s) standard, or using the RSTP protocol. Overall great for the price. Only negative I have found is that the frame-rate is set at 15fps and absolutely can’t be changed or reconfigured in any way to manually change the bitrate. The resolution options are what you’d expect (720,1080,2K) but just keep in mind that it’s all at 15fps. Not really a big deal as much for me, something to know. Oh, and the included 9v-0.4A power supply is the only option for power, PoE is NOT supported. The camera’s stream can be connected via ethernet or wifi, but not powered over ethernet as well. They work for a long time, and are $30, you can’t really go wrong.

Works well
I've had a number of security cameras. My last set of three worked very well but the program stopped being updated which made them useless for remote viewing. I have started the replacement them with this Tapo TP-Link wired camera. Hopefully the same won't occur with this company. The camera has exceptional clarity and internet connecting. It has been outside in the rain and cool weather without a problem. I had it on while a recent trip to Europe for a month with no hitches. I like a wired camera since it doesn't stop because of a low battery. I have it placed in my yard about 30 yards from the wifi unit in the house and it works flawlessly. The one thing that would improve it is to give it the ability to be move up/down and side to side remotely. Overall a very good product.

Good for $29.99 - Converted to battery/solar
So far, the picture is decent (2k) and night vision is good, not great. I haven't played with the motion sensitivity a lot yet, but so far seems okay. As you can see in the photo, I converted this camera, as an proof-of-concept, to a true wireless, solar/battery camera, as I can find ZERO ONVIF solar or battery cameras on the market. I want to use it with an NVR; in my case, Synology Surveillance. So I added a 2.1mm to USB A cable (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JGR7JJQ) and a waterproof USB solar charger (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08GPKBPJX). That was literally plug-n-play and the camera powered up and worked on the TP-Link Tapo (native) app. I did have some issues getting it to "pair" (last step in the setup process). I had to remove the tiny screws that revealed the SD card slot and the reset button to reset it, as it wouldn't pair after several tries. [the reset button is not labeled and is the black area (doesn't look like a button) just under the SD card slot]. The key in getting it paired is to unselect the "Private Wifi Address" in your direction wifi connection to the camera (I'm using iOS 16.x) AND keep trying. It took a few attempts. Then immediately update the firmware. Next, to get an ONVIF/RTSP connection to work, you need to create an account using the Tapo app (Camera settings | Advanced | Account - to create the settings - beware that the account/username is CASE sensitive, not just the pw - I learned that the hard way - also, seems no special characters can be used in the pw - I had to get rid of my * and then the RTSP authentication worked with that one change!). Lastly, you'll need your camera's ip address - easy to get from Tapo | Camera Settings | click on the camera thumbnail. Once I figured out the above, Synology Surveillance auto-discovered the camera and then authentication worked. That's the Synology app in the attached photo. So if you want to use this camera on a 3rd party app and/or go battery/solar and you're reading this review and/or setting up several of these cameras, this is a great deal. It's not the best camera but it's decent and works, making it a good value at $30 (plus cost of cable and solar charger if you want to go solar), in my case, an additional $24. But now I can add it to my existing Synology 1621+ to make a nice NVR system.

Worthwhile purchase - good value
Purchased for use on rear deck. Set up and installation was easy, downloads simple, quick activation. Was up and running quickly. So far, no issues to report. Image quality is excellent, quick transfer to mobile devises. Sensitivity is good, sound quality good. Really, this is a hard deal to beat. A more detailed owners manual included with the unit would be helpful, but those seem to be less and less available as a hard copy. On-line version is accessible, however. Used live chat to resolve an apparent issue. Turned up out to be user error, but the chat was quick, efficient and knowledgeable. Very satisfied so far. Great value for the money. Would recommend.

Excellent TP Link Customer Service
Amazon doesn’t accept returns after 30 days even after discussions with Leadership Team about the failure to operate the Tapo device they sent me and that I was never able to use the brand new product. TP Link warranty normally requires the customer to pay for shipping back the product before replacement. I have at least 7 Tapo C310 camera but this most recent one device had difficulty connecting to my Spectrum network. After hearing of my desperate failure to connect to wifi this new Tapo C310 last week, TP Link leadership offered to ship my FREE replacement. I had exhausted my options and wasted too much time everyday for weeks in vain. BUT, this weekend, by surprise, after praying for a miracle, the same Tapo C310 finally connected in a second without a fuzz. It finally became compatible with my Spectrum internet network along with my other reliable Tapo cameras. As a customer, I am very confident that TP Link will always stand firm behind its products. Tapo camera C310 had difficulty connecting to my Spectrum wifi YET TP Link never left me behind alone in the dark. Technical and Customer support of TP Link is the BEST

They sent me a faulty Tapo camera. It never turn on! Be aware
I'm really disappointed! I just bought 5 of these cameras in the category ( like new) 4 of them were fine, but they mess it out when decided to send me 1 that never worked , it just has infrared light on all the time! I feel scammed. In product's packages it said was supervised by Amazon quality control but I didn't expected that here.. I did pay for 5 cameras not for only 4 !

Phenomenally easy on 2.4 GHz. No long works on 5G network.
I came here to buy this after it was ranked first in a New York Times review of security cameras. Not only did it finish first it was also the cheapest. This camera replaces a previous cheap model that has since disappeared from Amazon. That experience was maddening. Flakey and limited software, intermittent WIFI signal, constant false notifications. This camera is mounted in the same spot and connected to the WIFI instantly. The software is simple and intuitive to use. The speaker is a little poor quality but I'm using it as driveway surveillance and have no plans on using the speaker. The image is very clear and downloads are simple and flawless. I have yet to figure out how to delete files on the SD card but with a 64 GB card I had kicking around and installed, I really don't need to worry about. The Activity and Privacy Zones (areas to watch and areas to ignore) work great. I'm able to cut out the front street traffic and identify only movement in the yard and driveway. The microphone is very sensitive. What a wonderful package for such a good price. I'll likely buy a couple of their solar units for mounting high on trees to watch all my good neighbours out walking their dogs...and the rare punk looking for Ford pickups to steal. One quick picky thing for the manufacturer. Please don't tighten the screws to the SD card door so tight. It was a struggle to remove even with the perfect sized Phillips screwdriver. Other than that, great product! Update: This camera performed flawlessly for months. Then I upgraded my router to 5GHz. The previous had both 2.4 and 5. This camera runs only on 2.4 although it does not say that in the description. Ai finds the information somewhere else on the www. My camera is now dead in the water and will not communicate with my 5 GHz network. I guess I will need to buy a new camera that is rated for 5 GHz. Progress I guess :-(.
