CD Review: Dynamic performance from Solti and the Chicago Symphony - I have a number of other recordings of Dvorák's 9th symphony, but it's one that I enjoy so much that it's always tempting to add another recording to my collection, particularly when I find one that my classical music friends have enjoyed themselves and recommend. And that's why I picked up this recording recently. Solti directs the CSO at just the right pace, and the horns are particularly prominent and excellent, not surprising since the CSO's horn section has always been highly regarded. The performance was recorded in Chicago on January 1983, and the recording is sharp and clear. Dvorák's 9th is one of the most popular classical works. Arkiv Music lists 227 recordings of it. My Penguin Guide (2008) provides 12 recommendations, not counting the sets of Dvorák's complete symphonies. Grammophone (2012 guide) lists 6 recommendations. None of these include this Solti recording in their list of favorites! Well, go figure. I think it sounds great. Solti didn't record the full Dvorák symphonies, but he produced a terrific performance here. I think it's as good as any in my collection (Neumann, Kubelik, Kertész, Bernstein, Kondrashin, von Karajan). This is a Decca release from 1984 or so, and as far as I know it has not been reissued either as an individual CD, or in a collection. The disc only includes the symphony, so at 46 minutes there is room left over that Decca did not make use of. The liner notes consist of a short essay on the piece, written by John Clapham. I purchased this as a used CD and received a essentially perfect disc and for a very reasonable price. Great choice for Dvorák and for fans of Solti and the CSO. Review: Excellent cd... terrific recording of Dvorak's Symphony Number 9 - From The New World. - This is the best recording - IMO... of Dvorak's Symphony From The New World. Solti conducted it beautifully at exactly the right tempo, where some conductors might have conducted it too quickly.....The second movement, which is my favorite part of this symphony...is amazing! The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is one of the best, IMHO...they've played several other favorites of mine...And this symphony is my all time favorite. I recommend this recording highly.

The best recording of the New World Symphony !
If you are looking for a recording of the New World Symphony, look no further. This is by far the best version of this symphony. Georg Solti is at its best, then the interpretation is perfect. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra offers a superb performance and it is very well recorded. You will not find better elsewhere, then do not hesitate.

A review by a classical music neophyte
I came to loving classical music at a later stage of my life. I heard this particular symphony on the radio and realized that so much of it can be heard in many movies. I purchased the CD and have enjoyed listening to it often.

Always one of my favorites
I taught my husband to love classical music with this piece years ago: you can hear the storm in the ocean crossing, the peacefulness and majesty of the country, and the folk songs brought by the immigrants. This is one of the best recordings of the Symphony, thanks for the CD reissue.

As great as 50 years ago............
I fell in love with the recording as a 33 rpm record in the 50s. This CD was a gift to one of my daughters who has just discovered Dvorak. She loves the music as much as I do. The packaging was minimal and the delivery was fast. All around, an excellent experience.

One of the Reasons I Love Classical Music: summed up in this recording
Believe it or not, this was the first classical cd I ever bought, about 30 years ago. Now, after listening to literally over hundreds more, this still holds a fervent piece of my heart. I cannot add any more accolades than the many eloquent ones already written here. Still, this recording is the main reason why I started to love, and will always love classical orchestral music. If you love Solti and the Chicago, I also recommend his mid-80`s Mahler No. 4, mid-70`s Beethoven No. 5 (NOT his digital 80`s version), all on Decca.

A classic to add to the list
There are several classic performances of this symphony that are obvious to find on this site and this one escaped my attention until last year. Solti in Chicago at his very best. The promising excitement in the first movement opens to a performance of drama and poetry... Any thoughts I might have had of Solti screwing up the tension to the detriment of the work were unfounded. Solti, as the other commentators have stated, really does bring a freshness to a score that I thought I knew so well...and to my ears it is essentially about masterly phrasing, wonderful pacing and fine orchestral balancing to bring out points of detail as if I am listening to the work for the first time. This is simply great conducting, great orchestral playing, captured in superbly recorded early digital engineering. It is an exciting vital performance: a classic to add to the long list of classic versions and for me it was something of a surprising discovery.

wunderbare Aufnahme, excellente Technik
