Is this a good lock to learn how to pick?

According to Bosnian Bill at Lock Labs, this lock contains one standard and four deep cut spools. He recommends it as a lock to learn how to pick spool pins, which are considered "high security" pins. So while it is a lock that you can learn somewhat advanced lock picking on, it is not one you'd want to consider as your first lock to learn on.

Is this a key retaining lock?

No this lock is not key retaining, the key comes out in either the locked or unlocked position. Thank you, NLS Products.
