JBL ProScan Water Analysis by smartphone - The new generation

I used this to make a comparison with the JBL drop checker and this was far better, I always check the strip in the same place in similar light and tested the kit by doing many tests when I first got it, hardly no variation between tests even doing 4 tests one after another, I also got the water chemically checked at a local aquarist shop and they were pretty much the same so very impressed, I still use a drop checker (not the JBL) as I've now upgraded to pressurised CO2 but use the strips every couple of weeks.

This is a great idea but unfortunately wholly unreliable. the first time I used it, the nitrite reading was 0.5mg/l which was worrying as it should be zero. The nitrate reading was also higher than I expected at 75mg/l. I repeated the tests twice and the results were the same. So I then spent a week carrying out water changes using RO water to reduce the nitrites to zero. After a week the readings were still too high so I began to suspect the Proscan was at fault and bought an NT Labs test kit. This confirmed that the nitrite level was actually 0 and nitrate was 20. I decided to report this to JBL and they were very helpful and asked for photos and more readings which I provided. After several weeks of "investigation by 2 departments" their conclusion was that the high nitrite and nitrate readings are within the Proscan's expected range of accuracy!! So in conclusion, the JBL Proscan is only suitable if you want a very rough idea of your aquarium water's parameters and while the app is a clever idea, what's the point of keeping records if the readings aren't accurate?

Excellent bit of tech. You do have to make sure you are in good light or it can throw the readings out a little. Have used this then got out the old test sets to check levels as show as out but weren’t due to bad lighting. Overall good item and reliable

Not sure why some reviews are flaky in regards to inaccuracies etc. I use a seneye device that is calibrated to my drop tests and these strips seam to be in good sync with my drop test and seneye results, i use them every other day just to keep an eye on the tank and do a proper drop test every other week. I would like to see a ammonia reading on the sticks though. I take the test at the same time each night when its dark and use my ceiling light that is very bright to ensure i have the same lighting on every test and never had any issues at all. Just make sure you dip the test for 2-3 seconds and make sure the dip time is part of the 60 second timer on the app.

I love the idea - and found it easy to use. However, not all the tests are reliable. Mostly, the nitrates matched up with other tests I have, but the nitrate consistently reads much higher than other tests - and gives the same value for samples that other tests identify as quite different (eg 25 ppm or 80 ppm nitrate). The other annoying aspect is that it does give you a manual back-up. This is basically a standard JBL strip, with a fancy reference card for the automatic reader. However, it doesn’t tell you which test square is which chemical, or give you the reference chart to let you double check it. If it had an ammonia test, I might use it regularly, but as it is I won’t buy it again. Too expensive for basically a nitrite check (nitrate doesn’t work and the others don’t really need checking regularly).

I used to hate strips, but this has changed my mind. Whilst I would not use this as a testing kit exclusively for any of my tanks, this is a great and fast way to get the important details quite quickly and accurately. So accurate in fact (90% of the time) that the numbers match my JBL Liquid tests. I think the best part of this is the fact that you can save results on the JBL app so you can go back into previous results. All in all a must have and lasts ages.

Purchased this test kit thinking it was a good test kit for my tropical fish tank, but I was wrong I read all the instructions twice & successfully downloaded the app. Tried three times to test my tanks water but what a load of rubbish every time I re-tested the water it was completely different than before. I own a 350ltr marine tank & if I can do 16 test successfully on that every week then this should be a breeze on my new tropical tank. I will be sending this back to Amazon if you require a test kit buy something else don’t waste your money on this one.

It's great. I always question my ability to differentiate between slight hues of yellow and orange lol This I have more trust in and test alot of important areas.

J’utilise le JBL ProScan Test d’eau depuis plusieurs semaines pour mon aquarium et je suis vraiment impressionné. Le système est simple à prendre en main même pour un débutant, les résultats sont clairs et rapides, et l’application dédiée est intuitive et bien faite. 👍 Points forts : Lecture des paramètres en quelques minutes Fiabilité des résultats (comparé à d’autres tests que j’avais) Application mobile pratique avec historique des mesures Design robuste, facile à manipuler Grâce à ce test, j’ai pu ajuster l’équilibre de mon eau (pH, nitrites, nitrates) et mes poissons sont visiblement plus actifs. Excellent rapport qualité-prix pour ce niveau de précision. Je recommande vivement à tous les aquariophiles, débutants comme confirmés !
