This textbook is an introduction and guide to undergraduate surgery. It has been a bestseller since its first edition in 2001. The philosophy of this book is to focus on the level of knowledge and the approach that would be expected of the better students reaching the end of their undergraduate training. Avoiding a book that is too cumbersome, we have tried to make this volume readable and enjoyable, using various techniques to help the reader remember key facts: the text has been deliberately written in a tutorial-like story format as opposed to a set of lists, since this makes it easier to understand and remember. In addition to general surgery, the book contains sections on trauma, orthopaedics, urology and Ent, making it the only comprehensive textbook for medical students wishing to learn top tips in surgery. Subjects that are poorly covered in other main texts - such as fluid balance management and minor surgical procedures - are dealt with in a tutorial fashion in this book, and there is a section on how to problem-solve even in the context of areas unknown to the student. This book is useful for medical students and also for junior doctors during their day-to-day working lives, as well as those coming up to postgraduate exams. Each chapter is written by an authoritative author, alongside the book editors, and they have ensured it remains in the spirit of the bestselling previous editions. Overall loved it, its one of the only textbooks I have read cover to cover and I don't even enjoy surgery! I was a medical student when I bought this, I have since graduated. I loved it, it is an old school surgical book which tells you all the important and clinically relevant information in a concise manor. Also great for impressing surgical consultants because it seems to include all the little extra bits of informations that are never on normal websites or textbooks but consultants always seem to ask you about. concise and enough for med students

Good book for casual informative reading
This book was recommended to me by a registrar while at medical school. I really struggle reading the dense text books we have to read at medical school so this book was great. It reads like a conversation and helps pull out the key points of a lot of common and serious surgical conditions. It is by no means comprehensive, however it is a very good read for the end of the day when you are too tired to focus on a dense text book and it will allow you to absorb key information easily. There are many helpful diagrams in the book, too.

Cheaper printed copy!
I have used this edition out of my university library several times before deciding to purchase this one for myself. The copy I received states it was printed by Amazon.co.uk on the back inside cover and is clearly of a much inferior quality than those published by the proper publishers (Imperial College Press). The cover is not as thick and the pages are of a cheaper matt type material. The contents appear to be identical however. I was a little disappointed to receive this obviously inferior copy but the contents of the book have been useful for my finals revision nonetheless. It would be helpful if Amazon would make it clearer within the items details that this is not an original publishers version.
