If i put my baby and another baby in this, how long will it take for them to engage in an mma fight?

It took my baby and my Bassett hound approximately two and a half minutes. Given that rounds are only three minutes long, it's not worth it for only thirty seconds worth of action.

Is it 18.5 sq feet with just the 6 panels or is that with the extra 2 you have to buy separate?

That is without the 2 extra panels. I have done some rough calculations of the play area: 6 panels in hex configuration: 19.6 sq. ft. 6 panels in rectangle configuration: 15 sq. ft. 8 panels in octagon configuration: 36.5 sq. ft. 8 panels in square configuration: 30.25 sq. ft. ( Hinge center to center is about 33")

Is this sturdy enough for a Maltese puppy

I have two lab puppies contained inside mine. They knock the sides, it shifts a little but not much. I also bought two extra panels to make bigger.

is there a gate on this?

No gate per se, but each section can be opened with a push down latch. The panels are not secure upright, however, if they are not all locked in place.
