What do the settings on the head mean? I can see I can twist the cap but what setting should it be set to?

On my system, there is a separate small meter which registers the amount of filtered water left. After replacing the filter it gets reset to 600 so I do not have to do anything with the filter head. As far as I can see from looking at my filter head, there are just numbers 1, 2 and 3 which refer to the bits that connect to it. No settings involved. Sorry not to be more help.

can you change the filter head yourself?

You can depending on your DIY skills! I got my plumber to fit ours. Quite straight forward.

Can you use this with any Grohe kitchen tap?

Yes that’s why I bought it. It replaces the old style filter heads but pipe work is compatible.

what is the external thread size? 1/2 or 3/8?

The external thread size is identical to to thread size of the water filter cartridge which it srews on to. Unfortunately I am unable to quote wether it is 1/2 or 3/8 ".
