is it simple plug in to quartz wall box

Mine was replacing a mechanical Newlec timer which I believe is an older version of the Horstmann Quartz: for the Newlec the colour codes are identical, just unplug the old timer connectors and plug in the new ones. http://www.horstmann.co.uk/water-heating.php is your friend here - the installation guides for the Quartz and the Electronic 7 are on there and show identical pin-outs. Disclaimer: I am not an electrician: you should exercise due diligence before proceding!

Can this item replace an old 'horstmann e7 bx' unit?

I used it as a direct replacement for an existing 30 year old Horstmann E7 unit but I can’t say whether it was a ‘bx’ unit.

Does anyone know if this unit will replace an old Electra tech control panel? I only need to use it for setting the hot water not radiators

I don't know if it will replace 'an old Electra tech control panel' but you can certainly set this unit for water heating only for any chosen time period/duration with summer/winter auto time change.There is also a Boost selector for use at anytime outside your 'set' period. Hope it helps!!
