This marker makes it simple to indicate where to begin drilling when you can't easily remove a section of pipe to put it in your drill press. It's especially good for smaller diameter pipes of 1/2" and larger, such as irrigation pipes, where 45 or 90 degree attachments can be made easily. Marking centerlines on runs of pipes can be done very simply. On skinny PVC irrigation pipes, for example, holes for spray heads can be consistently drilled for attaching multiple heads, at ANY angle that's needed. There are similar products in much larger sizes, available for repairing water supply pipes or even waste pipes; but the smaller size of this particular tool puts it into the sweet spot of most home-repair people. The bubble level was a bit too loose, as received. Fortunately, the rotating level can be screwed down a bit more, so any slop can be mostly eliminated. However, when this screw is tightened, the end of the screw enters the interior of the hole that the marking pin occupies, and – unfortunately – LOCKS THE PIN in place; even if the hex screw on the opposite side is loosened completely! To solve that problem, I did have to SHORTEN the screw used for the bubble level by grinding it down (by only a millimeter, or so!). After this slight adjustment, tightening the screw for the level no longer affected the in-and-out operation of the marking pin. And, once I got my preferred amount of friction set for the rotating bubble level – nice and smooth! – a drop of thread locking liquid on the screw keeps it from loosening up anytime soon.

This is a must have for pipe fitters and welders!!! It’s a great quality for the money, and is very accurate out the package! This will find true center of your pipe, and the punch allows for the marking of the pipe with a tap from your hammer!!! Easy to use and highly functional!!!! Oldschool is the new school!!!!

Wow. For $12, I thought this would be a small plastic tool, but it is much better. It is all metal with a 3/8" diameter scribe that slides up and down easily when the included allen wrench is not used to tighten it in place. I suspect pounding on the scribe to make an indent would not damage it, but I did not try it since I want this to last a long time. The bubble level on the adjustable angle wheel moves smoothly when turned, but gravity wont move it by itself. The adjustable angle lets you know where on the pipe you are marking with the top being 0 degrees. This can be used for proper placement and angle to drill holes in pipe or large dowels. It is also nice that it can be used on pipe as small as 1/2" and should work equally well up to 6 inch or larger pipe. Definitely a nice addition to our workshop. Update... I discovered that the screw on the front side angle adjustment was loose, so I used a phillips screwdriver to tighten it. When I did that, it screwed into the scribe so that it would not go up and down. They had installed one washer on the screw at the factory, but I needed to add a second and use some thread locker to keep the screw tight.

This seems like a pretty well made tool. I got it to review thinking how handy it'd be in all sorts of situations, but very quickly realized that it's not just a generic helper for anything with a radius…. The pipe you're measuring needs to be horizontal — and already stuck in place, otherwise what's the point! So this tool might really be designed for the crews putting pipelines through other peoples' land. Which is not the sort of stuff I do around the house most evenings and weekends 😅 I'm not sure how well the punch would handle serious iron but iiuc the point is to just make enough of a mark to drill later. It does work down to fairly *small* diameter pipes too though fwiw. The bubble level has just the right amount of friction, easy to set with just a thumb or finger but doesn't just spin around unwantedly afterwards. I think this will be a handy tool to have in the box for those random once-in-a-decade occasions where something specialized like this does bring a big win to a project. (Or like another reviewer cleverly points out, lining things up right for rotary engraving!)
