Mitutoyo 182-111 Steel Rule

I own this engineers scale in both metric and imperial. Hold one of these and one hand and a cheap steel ruler in the other and you will see why they are more expensive. Rigid, nice weight, smooth ground edges and clear accurate markings that are engraved not printed. Treat it with respect and it will last forever. Worth every penny and a pleasure to use.

I needed a 150mm metric-only rule. Surprisingly few products offer this – most also add freedom units. I bought 2 to compare – the Products Engineering (PEC Tools; B0F6D278K8) and the Mitutoyo 182-111 (B00027958Y). Both were about $15. Accuracy: Both are equally accurate – see photo. Build: Mitutoyo is a tad wider and thicker (19.1 vs 18.4mm; 1.2 vs 1.0mm). The Mitutoyo feels more substantial, but both are good. Finish: The Mitutoyo has a brighter matte satin finish, which isn't visible in the photo. The markings are also a tad bolder on the Mitutoyo, which could be seen as a positive or negative compared to the finer markings on the PEC. I quite prefer the Mitutoyo, though would be happy with either. That said, the PEC seems to be harder, and doesn't scratch as easily. Layout: Flip the PEC on its lengthwise axis, and nothing changes. Do the same with the Mitutoyo, and the numbers read from the opposite end. Both rules have 1mm markings on one side, and 0.5mm markings on the other. I find the former much easier to read, and prefer to use the 1mm markings most of the time. With the Mitutoyo, I can use this scale reading from all four corners of the rule, albeit having to read upside-down numbers for two of them. With the PEC, there's only one ideal orientation (repeated on both sides): reading from top left. Reading from bottom right, the numbers are upside down (no biggie); but reading from the other 2 corners requires mentally subtracting the reading from 150, or switching to the 0.5mm scale. I much prefer the layout of the Mitutoyo. Other: They both come with flimsy plastic sleeves; the wider PEC sleeve is much easier to insert the (narrower) PEC rule into than the Mitutoyo is with its sleeve. I can't see using the Mitutoyo with its sleeve, but maybe could with the PEC. Overall, these are both very nice rules, and most would be happy with either. For me, it's the Mitutoyo for the win, due to it bolder, more contrasty markings, and its superior layout.
