Brake winches have no ratchet, so they're always "in gear"..... there is no neutral, or free-wheel mode. A friction braking system is built in, so the load is always locked in place any time the handle is released. This winch is built for multi-purpose hauling and lifting operations. It is not to be used as a hoist for lifting, supporting, or transporting people, or for loads over areas where people could be present.
