The epic Predator legacy continues with this action-thriller set in the Comanche Nation. When Naru, a fierce and highly skilled young warrior, sets out to protect her people, the prey she stalks turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator â leading to a vicious and terrifying showdown. Review: Probably The Best Predator Movie - It's been said that Predators have been on Earth longer than most people think, and Prey takes full advantage of this angle. Set in the 1700s, in the wilds of North America where the colonialists haven't yet overrun the indigenous population, its main character--aside from the Predator of course--is a Commanche girl named Naru (Amber Midthunder). Naru yearns for a more active life, away from the tribal village where women do the women's work, and out among the men where the hunts take place. Unfortunately, she's about to get her wish, just not in the way she imagined. Every bit as good a warrior as any of the males, she's going to need every last ounce of that skill, because her homeland is where one of the first Predators to visit the Earth (unless you count the under-appreciated Alien Vs. Predator movies, which don't seem to be considered canon to the main franchise) touches down on the planet. Immediate concern: after the heavy punishment they've faced in previous movies, how are they going to have a Predator NOT go through enemies with just muskets and tomahawks like a chainsaw through butter? The answer is, the filmmakers don't try to avoid it. Most of the time, the Predator just slaughters his way through his foes like a hurricane. And yet, somehow, when the other characters manage to gain an advantage on the hunter, it doesn't come off as contrived. It takes the best the natives have got, but they do manage to get some good hits in there from time to time. And while fast and tough, the previous movies have shown that Predators aren't unkillable. Or will this be the time one of the Predators actually manages to completely annihilate his enemies on all fronts? Great action sequences, great acting, well shot, and boasting a cool new, more primitive look for the Predator, this movie just might be the best in its franchise. Extremely recommended. Review: Best #1 Predator movie so far - I am so impressed and obsessed with this movie I needed to own a DVD so I could watch it on my portable player. This movie was so captivating fusing true histotically correct times with futuristic themes of alien incursion. The cinamatography is beautiful and breathtaking, I have raved about this version to all and now I physically own my copy to add to my collection!

A Predator from the Past that Honors the First Predator
I am old enough to remember seeing the very first "Predator' movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger. and how brilliant it was as a SciFi movie, which sparked a series of lesser movies. When I saw 'Prey' ads and realized I was unable to view it on Amazon Prime, and that I believe it was made for video (not a theater release), I was so happy to be able to purchase it. It is BRILLIANT and, I would say, equally as good, if not even better, than the original. I love how it is based in the 1719 when Native peoples reigned over the land while white explorers and fur traders began moving in. The Native cast were/are actual Native American actors, which so added to the authenticity of the time period. The introduction of French fur traders was perfect, and I loved how there is no subtitles, as their acting and emoting clearly shows what they are saying and what their intentions are. The 'Comanche' characters (again, this was a mix of Native actors who played these roles and weren't necessarily Comanche Nation people, begin the movie speaking in their tongue, yet it becomes English, as if we are now Comanche, thus able to understand them. It worked for me. I did feel it was very much a 'kill or be killed' plot where any predator or prey is preyed upon, yet it was okay as this played into the whole 'predator and prey' theme. It is a VERY well acted movie and the plot is fantastic. The Predator character is fantastic as it is different than the original, yet still honors the original. It seemed almost more primitive in its technology than the original Predator, which is brilliant as it implies that their technology would also improve over 300 plus years. I have since read that there are plans to to a sequel, and even the credit animation implies this if you pay attention, which is pretty cool, to me. If you like he first movie, I think you will love this one!

Love this film for so many reasons
Excellent film, one of the better in the franchise. Great storyline, acting and I appreciate the acknowledgement that if the Predators have been coming to Earth for sport, they would've run across other ethnicities/cultures, through the centuries. I also appreciated we were given a female lead who could step up to the moment, the same way Sigourney Weaver's Ripley character, from the "Alien" films (the world is a better place with strong women in it). Loved the cinematography as well. The physicality of the actors in the fight and action scenes, would make any of them worthy of characters within the John Wick universe too (does the "Table" have connections in the First Nations as well?). Only weird thing, was that my blu-ray player was a little finicky playing this disc... I had to to disconnect the power and replug, but then it loaded up and played as expected.

A little slow to get going, but lots of fun
PREY is touted as being part of the PREDATOR series, and I suppose it is. But it absolutely can be a standalone film. Amber Midthunder plays Naru, a very tough (dare I say scrappy) Comanche, who bristles under the scorn of the male warriors in her tribe, and has trainer herself to be a hunter in a society where no one wants her to be one. However, she’s a good tracker and good with medicine (and also has a very indulgent brother), so she gets to tag along on some scouting expeditions and hunts. Set in 1719, in the heart of the American plains, Naru is a competent but smart-mouthed teenager. In fact, the dialogue, to put it mildly, is often anachronistic, or at least I assume it is given I know nothing about how Comanche actually talked to each other in 1719. But while out on her own, working on her axe-throwing, Naru gets a glimpse of an alien vessel in the sky, leaving after dropping off a Predator. No one believes her, and some of the subsequent carnage is chalked up to cougars or bears. And indeed, they do encounter those animals and other predators. But we certainly know that before long, they’re going to run into something just a bit more difficult to track and kill. PREY is very serious about its action sequences, and while they are impressive, what I really enjoyed was seeing Naru come into her own. She kicks butt, but uses her considerable wits to even greater effect. Her hunting and fighting is clumsy and hesitant at first, but she’s a fast learner, and soon has motivation aplenty to mame and kill. Midthunder, I should say here, is excellent and very convincing. My only real gripe with the film is that it is slow to get started. The sequences early in the film are interesting, but each time we are teased with the possibility that the action is going to ratchet up, and then it does not. Some might argue the film is building tension and character. It feels more like the film wanted to be sure it was 90 minutes long, so padded it with some stuff. But when it does kick into higher gear, you can’t fault it. There is action. There is gore. There is plenty of inventive killing from the Predator. And there is Naru, thinking faster than anyone, acting faster and simply perplexing the heck out of the Predator. It’s lots of fun, and if you’re looking for a fix of action, but need something different, PREY is your ticket to a good time!

PREY at its BEST!
PREY, definitely the best standalone movie since the PREDATOR starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Many subsequent sequels were made but were not as promising, rather disappointing for many fans of this franchise. Dan Trachtenberg did a remarkable job not only as a director but wrote the story with Patrick Aison. A time where the indigenous people of America are the first settlers before the whites came and began settling in this land. A period in the story when the first Predator also arrived in this land and so began its hunt for glory. The beautiful landscape and the locations where it was filmed. A remarkable job by The Creature Designers Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr., Director Dan Trachtenberg, Director of Photography Jeff Cutter, Film Editor Angela M. Catanzaro ACE & Claudia Castello and the Warrior, Actor Amber Midthunder. An exciting suspense adventure, action fight sequences at its best and great visual effects to capture every moment. In this 4K UHD format delivers crisp pictures and Dolby Atmos sound that gives you the punch in this disc. A must have copy, highly recommended to be part of your favorite movies in your own Library of Great Entertainment. Five Stars for me! Looking forward to Dan Trachtenberg's Predator: Badlands.

Better than the first Predator film! This is how to make a prequel!
Firstly, the 4K disc looks mind bogglingly good! This is one beautifully photographed movie filled with gloriously magnificent landscapes and the quality of the 4k Blu-ray brings all of it out exceptionally well. Now, on to the movie: This prequel is set around 300 years in the past when a predator came to Earth and hunted the warriors or a native American tribe living on the western plains. Amber Midthunder (who I've been a fan of for years) is fabulous as a native American woman who wants to be a warrior and hunter among her tribe. Although this is not strictly forbidden for a woman, it simply isn't done. And she gets a lot of blowback from other members of the tribe who don't believe a woman should be encroaching on what is traditionally a man's territory. To be accepted in this role, it is required for an individual to hunt something which can hunt a them back, such as a bear, a mountain lion, etc. The predator would certainly more than qualify in this regard. The male hunters in her tribe think the creature hunting some of them is a bear, but she realizes quickly that no bear does what this creature does, and insists this thing is something else entirely. The male hunters refuse to listen to this women, who's opinion they instantly dismiss, telling them that that she knows better than they as experienced hunters do. But, eventually, when they come face to face with this predator, they will at last learn that she is right and that this creature is something else entirely, something which they have never before encountered. I was especially impressed that, being set 300 years in the past, the predator's technology, although still futuristic by our present day standards, is more primitive than what we've seen in the other predator films set centuries later. A really nice touch. The action in this movie is pulse pounding, the acting is uniformly excellent, the script is the best I have ever seen in a Predator movie, and the directing and cinematography are absolutely phenomenal. There isn't a single misstep in this above average action film. I couldn't recommend Prey on 4K Blu-ray any more highly than I do . It is an exceptional disc of an excellent film.

The predator franchise
This movie flick is not only capable of keeping you entertained with family for hours on end but fluent in communicating the old Indian values of the entire Indian nation. Well done Martin scorszi in producing this with director John Landis who wrote American werewolf in London and Michael Jackson's Thriller like Vincent prices auto dub.

A new entry in the 'Predator' franchise of science fiction movies. About the aliens who come to Earth to hunt. This is set in the year 1719. It's a stand alone story that doesn't tie into any of the other Predator movies. So you don't need to have seen anything else to get into this. Set in America as it was, the main character is a girl called Naru. A member of a tribe of native Americans. They live a nomadic existence off the land. She's good at tracking. Has a faithful dog. She thinks she's ready to go hunting for game with her brother. He doesn't. But there's something else out there that's hunting things..... I think this is just what the franchise needed. Not trying to set things in motion with stories to be resolved over several movies. But just a stand alone movie that utilises the concept. It does utilise it very well, it has to be said. Naru is a good lead character. The actress does make her likeable. The location filming is nicely done. It captures the feeling of what it would have been like to live this kind of existence back then. It's not a film that appears to have a required a huge budget. Even so, it doesn't look low budget. The cinematography is really good and captures the landscapes well. The cast playing the tribe are all native Americans so that does add authenticity. It does try to give you the feeling of there being an invisible and powerful predator around. One that could strike at any moment. There are times when the score does slightly get in the way of this. But there are others when it is very effective indeed. Although in it's first half this feels like a four star movie. In that it's really good but just lacking that certain something to be really memorable, I found it really clicked in the second. It does open certain things up slightly to allow for it to be more than just the Predator stalking a handful of people. There's some superb imagery in terms of how things are staged which brings some memorable shots. Also, the fight scenes are memorable. Naru is not what they call a girl boss. Someone who could do anything without breaking a sweat. You feel the fights as she goes through them, and you do wonder if she can succeed. Which is as it should be. The resolution is effective. Sometimes films like this seem to have no idea how to end. But this reaches a logical and pretty satisfying finale, without stretching itself out too much. A very memorable viewing experience. Glad I finally got to it. There's nothing extra during or after the end credits. The dvd has the following language and subtitle options: Languages: English. English audio captioned. German. Italian. Comanche. Subtitles: English. German. Italian. Although the actors playing the tribe all speak English, which of course they wouldn't have, it is done properly and thus it doesn't feel like a dub. So that works fine. Or course you could put the Comanche language track on and the English subtitles, if you want the really realistic experience.
