Will this accept gold powder and still look gold, or will black discolor the gold?

The gold will show, I would suggest you do a base layer, after it dries add a second layer with the gold added in.

This says that it is a finishing lacquer. does that mean i only use it as a top coat? or can i use this for the entire process?

It's well known for being used a top coat, but you can also use as a base or intermediate coat as well.

does this dry gloss or matt ?

Gloss theydo sell a matt I believe.

can i use this product to fill in missing lacquered spots on a vintage japanese jewelry box?

Hi, it'll depend on a size of the missing spots. Sometimes lacquer itself isn't enough to fill in, then you should add something else. Thanks!
