In a 100 Mbit network, two of the four existing wire pairs of a patch cable are unused. This adaptor not only routes the used wire pairs 1+2 and 3+6 to the first connector, but also makes the wire pairs 4+5 and 7+8 available to the 1+2 and 3+6 contacts of the second connector. This requires an existing network infrastructure, which is why the adaptor is intended for use in large, structured networks in which it is possible to integrate the respective wire pairs in the existing network. A network connection cannot be doubled by Y cable like an audio or electrical connection, which is why this adapter does not make it possible to use two devices on a home router LAN port.
