This rare original Nazi stamp was issued in 1935 on the day of remembrance for German heroes of WW1 (note the background trench fences in the background). Hitler himself had fought in WW1 as a lowly corporal and wanted the support of veterans for the rearmament and mobilization of Germany, Putting a heroic German soldier on a stamp also garners public sympathy and support for increased militarization. The soldier is wearing the legendary German "Stahlhelm" (steel helmet) that was pressed into service late during WW1 and would became standard issue for Nazi troops which would march into battle once again 4 years later. This is the FIRST German stamp to depict a steel helmet. A great tie-in between WW1 and WW2 with a superb image of the German infantryman wearing the helmet that helped revolutionize warfare and would became ubiquitous on battle fronts throughout Europe.
