STG41RM Steering Gear

Great fit

I thought the motorcraft reman ( rebuilt) would be the way to go. It had almost a quarter turn of steering wheel play. I narrowed it down to the new steering gear. New Moog tie rods, rag joint is like new, etc. inside of new gear is filthy. Left the fresh power steering fluid black. After 4 1/2 turns adjustment it is almost good enough. I have no more adjustment left. The adjuster binds and you have to drive it, then you can turn it another quarter turn tighter. Also the thing had noticeably more play turning left until I adjusted it. Don’t buy this one if you have a lifted truck with ttb. Truck will wander all over the place. I also have an aftermarket rough country steering stabilizer with a 6” lift and 35 12.50 r17 nitto ridge grapplers. The steering needs zero play to go down the road at 55 mph. I double checked that it was the steering gear box by grabbing the steering shaft with channel locks and staring at the rag joint, then the pitman arm, tires etc. while turning steering shaft. Play was in fact coming from freshly remanufactured ford motorcraft steering gear box. The play was actually significantly worse out the box than the original 196,000 mile one that’s been in it.

Replaced an original 33 year old leaking gear . So far this is working as the original one.I just trust motorcraft parts because of the reman specs they use .Update after 8 years this steering gear is Spot on,the original had 550000 on it and this unit near 100000,with no problems .1985 ford f150 4.9 with the original engine they installed in 1984 .
