Thule Motion 3 Rooftop Box

I purchased the Thule Motion 3 in the XL size, and it has been outstanding. It fits perfectly on my RSQ8 with no clearance or mounting issues at all. Installation was straightforward, and once mounted it feels extremely solid and secure—even at highway speeds. The storage capacity is impressive. It easily holds a ton of gear, making it perfect for road trips, vacations, or hauling bulky items without sacrificing interior space. The box opens smoothly and the locking mechanism feels high-quality and confidence-inspiring. One extra touch that really set it apart for me was having it color-matched to the car—it looks absolutely fantastic and blends seamlessly with the vehicle, almost like a factory option. Overall, this is a premium rooftop box that delivers on quality, capacity, and aesthetics. Highly recommend, especially if you’re considering the XL size and want maximum space without compromising looks.

This is great. I’m very pleased with its sturdiness and design. It’s very convenient to be able to open from either side, and it’s large enough to hold all our luggage and more. Also, it looks like Spock’s coffin. Winning.

Bought this for my 2025 Wagoneer. Installation was easy, and the box fits perfectly on the Jeep. I was able to store three carry-on suitcases and two duffel bags. No wind noise Very sturdy On the highway I was doing 80+ mph, drove 5 hours out to Lake placid without any issues.

This cargo box is incredibly well designed from both an esthetics and functional point of view. The XL fits like a glove on our 2023 Highlander. I was really wanting to try the XXL but according to my measurements and the fitment chart provided by Thule, it appears the hatch would contact the box on that model. I went with the XL for peace of mind since I knew it would fit and it’s plenty of space for for our needs. We can easily fit two full sized suitcases and one carryon size with plenty of room around them to stuff other miscellaneous items. Installation was a breeze and took me less than 10 minutes. The vehicle with the box still fits in the garage and can be opened and loaded there as well. The lock and latching mechanism make opening and closing the box a breeze - it feels much smoother than the old Yakima Skybox I had before and overall this feels much higher quality. I’ve only had the carrier for a day so will update later with better pictures and more information on road noise and durability.

XL Held up well in 30 mhp wind, rain, and snow for over a week. XL is a good size for mini van. Cover top felt flimsy when opening and closing because material flexes, but it held up during our travel. Light weight and Easy to install/lock. Helps to buy car door steps for easy access to rooftop unless you are tall. It provided sufficient room for canopy, chairs, and luggage. Rooftop was quiet and no noticeable noise during travel. Good buy for camping and traveling.

Bought this in early October as an early Christmas gift. Opened it up on December 20 and was faced with a nightmare. The pivot fastener holding the arm to the top part of the cargo box was detached and I had to install it via a screw and then the locking mechanism in the right side came out when using the key. The cargo box does not lock from the right side anymore and I had to use thick weather tape to hide it. It can be opened up easily by anyone without the key. Never trusting a Thule product again.

Great purchase overall! I did have some inconveniences with the order, which caused me a lot of headaches and took more time than expected. Thankfully, everything went smoothly in the end, and I finally received my order in great condition. Some people mentioned issues with the adhesive in the front, but you can simply use an adhesive spray to remove it easily without leaving any residue or marks. One thing to note: mine came with a very small dent from the inside out. It looks like a minor factory assembly issue, but it’s barely noticeable and not a big deal I’m keeping it. The main problem I experienced was the shipping, which required a lot of follow-up and persistence before they finally delivered it. Aside from that, I’m very satisfied with the product. The dimensions are perfect and exactly what I was looking for. I installed it myself without much trouble. The box isn’t heavy, but you should handle it with care if you drop it, it could break.

Amazing box. First trip and it held two carry ons and quite a few duffle bags and still had room left. Drove it from Ohio to Wisconsin in heavy rain and it may have only had a few drops in although it only advertises as water resistant…but it still did well. It was easy to lock into place a felt really secure. The true test was a winter storm that popped up while we were out of town with 30mph wind gusts and heavy snow. I was keeping an eye on it randomly throughout the drive through the moon roof and while it bounced a bit (most likely due to the roof mounts) we had no issues.

Received today Thule Motion 3 L regular profile. It is very nice! Easy to install and looks good. However, the picture posted on the Amazon cart seems to be not the regular profile but the low profile. Now this seems to be a bit higher than expected. And would love to connect with Thule for return and swap with motion 3 XL low profile. Hope Thule reach out. Thanks.
