Somewhere between where life's uncertainty and nature's fury collide, Dark Ages resides. Singer/guitarist Max Cavalera, conductor of the innovative metal mavens Soulfly and co-founder of the renowned band Sepultura, returns with Soulfly's heaviest, most flammable work to date. Dark Ages marries the band's aggressive driving force with disarming experimentation - Soulfly hallmarks that are as unpredictable as they are brave. Armed with the same core band as found on last year's Prophecy (guitarist Mark Rizzo, drummer Joe Nunez, bassists Bobby Burns and Dave Ellefson), Cavalera also continues the tradition of adding guests into the mix and blowing sonic boundaries out of existence. Review: Their best album! - I have been listening to soulfly since 2001 and so far this is my favourite and probably their best, its an incredible album and if you like metal i urge you to give it a listen! Review: Max in fury - After the 5star Prophecy, comes this. Another 5 star effort of pure thrash mayhem. Max in top form, feeds our hunger. 5/5

Classic thrash album!
This is an absolutely rocking heavy metal album and possibly a little underrated. It's easily Max Cavalera's best work since leaving Seplultura and in my opinion better than anything they did. (Though I realise that's a controversial statement!) It's beautifully produced (by Max himself) and literally every tune is of the highest quality. Unlike Soulfly's previous albums this doesn't get bogged down in endless lounge doodles and ethnic beats. Instead it goes from one crushing riff to another, with some almost dance-music like flourishes such as 'Riotstarter.' Tracks like 'Arise Again' and 'Frontlines' are pure classic brutal thrash. If you're looking for no-nonsense, straightforward quality heavy metal then I would strongly recommend this. Don't be put off if you don't like previous Soulfly albums, this is much better. There's no rapping and virtually no guest-singers! There's enough variety and brutality to keep you happy for ages.

Soulfly
Very very interesting album. On the first few listens i was a bit blunted due to the fact that as with their previous effort's, its more back to basics and less "experimental". I quite enjoy soulfly for the very fact they dont sound like all the other bands out there. The blend of hard and smoothe with the fast and tribal has allways been what set them and sepultura apart form the crowd. In my initial ignorance i had no idea just how good this album is, its truly a grower! This is potentially the best Soulfly record yet! its desolate and heavy while retaining a quality that lets you get deeper and deeper with every listen. As with Tool - this wont please everyone but hardcore Soulfly'ers will not be dissapointed - just listen carefully and you'll be pleasantly surprised as benath the bludgeoning noise; beats the melodic heart of a juggernaut! :)

Not a return to form, rather a whole new take
Many years ago I got Soulfly's first album and it blew me away. I still play it from time to time, and it never fails to impress me. However, as Soulfly released subsequent albums it became clear that they had found their blueprint and were reluctant to shift from it. I rapidly lost interest in the formulaic writing style and tired sentiments. This album forces me to forgive them for all that. It seems Max is actually angry again, and his band have developed a truly crushing sound. Each track is fresh and new, and the album as a whole is so perfectly structured I can happily sit and listen to it all without growing bored. Riotstarter is by far the most experimental song, and when coupled with tracks like Soulfly V or Arise Again, shows the true breadth of talent in this incarnation of the band.

The 5th Soulfly album since Max Cavaleras departure from Sepultura. This is where Soulfly took a turn for the heavier, after changing direction from Prophecy. The album starts with The Dark Ages a creepy string intro that leads you into Babylon which is a heavy fast paced, head banging guitar groove driven song. I and I is awesome just relentless and fast, drums kicking like crazy and bass rumbling away. Carved Inside is really groovy with some tribal influenced instruments. Arise Again is super fast in vein of Refuse/Resist with ferocious guitars and wicked thick drum patterns. The album is their heaviest since their first album(self titled) Molotov is a mosh pit song with break-neck guitar speeds and bass that rumbles with ferocity. Frontlines is another mosh anthem,Max vocals are brutal. They blaze through this song with their best guitar chords and just stop-start guitars. Innerspirit is anazingly melodic and beautiful, guest vocals from the same guy who added guest vox on Moses(Prophecy) it has some really spacy island tribal vibes to it. Corrosion Creeps is another song almost like Attitude, the bass drones and the drums are really intricate. Riotstarter seems to be their version of Prodigy's Firestarter but totally Cavalera'd out, this is so damn catchy with a fast-paced groove. Nice guitar vibes and excellent basslines, the speed of the song is just fast enough to make you move your body & bang your head. Bleak is far from bleak,it is percussive and vocally incredible. It is like a metal grenade thrown into your ears, the March is like a battle theme for when your ready to fight. It is a fight song,to get you pumped. Fuel the Hate is a raw & rough song that makes your head bang uncontrollably, they put there energy this baby & spit there hate at the posers(listen to the lyrics) Staystrong is a really killer song,a good 10 minutes long that starts off heavy and blends into a smooth island style tropical guitar & flamenco's are added to give it extra layers. The album closer is the instrumental Soulfly V and it is so beautifully melodic, they really have grown into their zone. They know there strongpoints and they really add newer and newer instruments & experiment with the sound. The album is solid from start to finish, the album is a piece of art and it does not have any weak points whatsoever. This is by far the best album other than the self titled,Conquer & Omen. This band just seems unstoppable but Max Cavalera is such a brilliant musician, his work with Spultura is legendary. If you like Max or Sep or Soulfly check out the oldschool project of his called Nailbomb, that is an experimental industrial masterpiece. Can't go wrong with this album, don't listen to the negative reviews (if any) just get the album and make your own opinion. Spread the word and let people know about this great music.
