On a mission in a Central American jungle, a team of commandos find themselves hunted by an extra-terrestrial warrior. Review: One of the best - As a sci-fi fan this is one of my all time favourites. I never get tired of watching this. Can’t believe it’s 40 years old. Review: Superb transfer and audio - Superb image quality with HDR really making the jungle and effects come to life, meaning Predator has never looked so good. Compared to DVD and the waxy Blu-ray, it's just excellent. The DTS-HD MA soundtrack is also superb. All combined, it's like watching a different film. Superb. This is surely the definitive Predator release.

Finally a decent release for PREDATOR.
Through the years I've owned many different copies of 'Predator', from VHS, DVD and the previous Blu-Ray version. The one consistent thing about 'Predator' is the awful way it looked, blurry, very grainy and not at all nice to look at. The reason I've bought it so many times, despite it's wafer thin plot (soldiers are hunted by a largely unseen alien-in the jungle, that's it!!!) is probably nostalgia. In my opinion the new remastered 'Ultimate Hunter' edition has good points and bad points. I use an Optoma HD projector and it produces an image almost 9 feet wide in full 1080p. Good: Colours are deep and rich and the contrast is slightly elevated giving a much brighter picture, the last version on Blu-ray was dull faded and washed out like a t shirt that's been through the machine 25 times. The Sound is very good for a movie of this era, the whomp of the rotor blades on helicopters, the deep sound of the explosions and the bass from the awesome mini-gun scenes are all impressive. Also, this version of 'Predator' on Blu-ray has all of the special features from the two disc Dvd released years ago, which were lacking on the first Blu. Bad: Enthusiasts of film will absolutely hate what has been done to spruce up the image of this picture, in order to make the image look better than it was the last time, it appears to have been through the Digital Noise Reduction process. Unfortunately that has scrubbed the image of all the grain that was always so noticable on the print, leaving an artificial almost cgi quality to the film. Last Words: In my humble opinion, this is the best version of 'Predator' that is available, a bright, colourful, smooth and clean image upgrade. I think it is a big improvement, and while it may upset purists, everyone else who loved this movie from the 80's will appreciate what has been achieved. It was almost certainly the best that could have been done with the available technology.

Awesome Collectable
This review is not really about the quality of the transfer and the quality of the 3D medium in which it is presented but more about collectable bust you get with this version. I have seen Predator hundreds of times and being a Predator fan it was not the Blu-ray that drew me to this item. When I saw this for pre-order I was totally blown away by the Predator head. Now we have seen a collectable Predator head before. In the wake of the Alien Quadrilogy 9 disc collectable Alien head, Predator, Predator 2 and Alien vs Predator got repackaged in a box set head of it's own. That item is much sought after by collectors and to find such an item on ebay you can expect to pay anywhere from £50.00 if you are lucky up to £150.00. The quality of that sculpture is not a patch on this release exclusively from Amazon. When I first saw this release I knew I had to have it. I was a bit dubious as the photos looked ok in some shots and a bit cheap in others. However, I knew that this being a limited edition would in time be worth it's weight in gold to fans and collectors alike and already there are people on ebay selling this for nearly £200.00. So is this really any good? In a word YES!! For the price on Amazon this is an extremely great bargain. Although I have yet to view the film itself as I do not have a 3D TV and Blu-ray player (I need to ask my mate very kindly to pop round his one night and watch it on his) the quality of the sculpt is better than I first thought. First up is the mask. It fits very well over the Predator's face and is held in place on the top of the head by 2 magnets concealed within the underside of the mask. This stops it from falling forward so there is no danger of it falling off accidently and breaking. It is also weathered very well giving it that used and abused look straight out of the movie. The only grievance I have is the masks eyes and tri-laser targeting system. It would have been a nice touch to have the masks eyes hollow and covered with a screen mesh rather than molded as part of the mask. The targeting lasers on the side of the mask suffer the same problem as it would have been nice to have red tinted clear plastic insets rather than what is molded there already but this is really being nit picky as over all it looks fantastic. Secondly the head itself. It is a descent enough sculpt and has a great paint job on the skin with some nice tones. The ringlets on the dreadlocks are molded as part of the dreadlock then painted. It would have been a more detailed look to have the ringlets as separate items and the same with the neck ring. When all said and done though what really makes this light years ahead of the other Predator Head release is the fact that it has a removable mask and that the dreadlocks, quills and teeth are all separate entities glued on individually making it more realistic. I would personally say that for the money you can't go wrong. If you are Predator fan this is an absolute must have just for the sculpture alone and when you compare this to something like a life size bust from Sideshow Collectables which would set you back around anywhere from 4 or 5 hundred Dollars to over one thousand Dollars the £90.00 price tag here is more than generous. If I had the money I'd buy another one to keep in mint condition for when the value increases with age. The disc itself will be worth nothing but this set as a whole is going to sky rocket in time. Buy your's now while you still can!

Very excited with this.
The package is exactly as described and excellent quality. Plays perfectly on the PS5. Totally worth it. One of the best action sci-fi films ever made.

Good transfer for the 4k edish!
You all know the film. It's brilliant. Thankfully the 4k edition is the best version I have seen. The last blu ray was terribly over-digitised and some skin (especially a particular scene with Carl Withers) looked almost plastic. The 4k transfer remians faithful to the original film (which was shot in 35mm). If I have a minor criticism it would be the colouring is a little lighter and maybe lacks a bit of depth but you could probably fix that with your tv settings. Remember, you're not getting a film shot in 4k so don't expect insanely high resolutions but it is faithful to the original with some impressive tweaks without being intrusive. For instance, you no longer see Carl Wither's real arm underneath the prosthetic stump which used to annoy me.

I can't believe how good it looks
When I bought this on 3D Blu-Ray I hadn't heard anything about it, I expected it to be, well, not that great. I was blown away not only by how clear the movie is, but also how well rendered the 3D effects were. Usually when 3D is added in post you get almost like a paper doll / layered 2D effect. Not so with Predator. It looks great, wonderful depth of field. Personally I feel you could put this side by side with any modern film shot in 3D and it would hold its own. It feels brand new all over again. The only thing that's a little off is the scene where Dutch and Dillon meet. There is a slightly unrealistic smoothness to both Schwarzenegger and Weather's faces. But really that's the only time anything feels "processed". It really is an amazing restoration and I really hope they give this treatment to many more of my 80's favorites.

Not that bad...
I don't know what the fuss is about the quality of this Blu-Ray is about I think certain reviewers aren't fully aware of the remastering process involved in taking a movie this old recorded on analog film and mastering it into Blu-Ray format I'll explain that a bit throughout this review. I've been watching this movie since I was a kid on VHS and I've been looking at the same DVD copy of it for a long time. I bought this movie on Blu-Ray simply because it seemed pertinent to get one of my all time favorite movies in the highest possible quality and plus I needed to add something to my purchase to get free super saver shipping, ha. But anyways, this is an old movie and inherent in the type of film stock the film was made with is a bit of grain. The idea that Blu-Ray imparts digital remastering on films making them "perfect" looking images is a false one to say the least. Blu-Ray does bring out the colors allowing for a more clear and defined picture but along with that it will also cause grain to become more prevalent which is something people should be mindful of when purchasing a film this old in this particular format. Think of it this way, basically Blu-Ray raises the scale of the video your watching and with the bigger scale the the grain also gets bigger. Now there is a process to remove this grain from films such as this the grain/noise removal process is basically a filter that blurs the image slightly to make the grain go away, which is nice although heavily grained films such as this one it makes the image very, very blurry and causes a "soft focus" effect which can cause you to to miss out on more subtle things in the frame. Look to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn on Blu-Ray to see just how terrible a price you pay for a grain free picture. Personally I much prefer being to see subtle movements on actors faces over there being a bit of grain on the screen. It bugs me that people buy these things and then rail them for not being painstakingly restored frame by frame by whatever company decided to put it out. That's a very costly and time consuming process that is reserved much more popular films. I apologize for rambling I'll continue on to my review of the disc now. This is a great looking version of Predator the colors are as vibrant as they've ever been and I've owned this film in virtually every format since the late 80s. I'm guessing this disc was put out as part of promotion for the new "Predators" film because most of the special features originally on the two disc DVD collectors edition have been replaced by stuff featuring the the film makers from Predators but that's not such a big deal the two disc collectors edition DVD is still quite affordable and easy to find online and really it's kinda nice that they at least attempted to add something new instead of just rehashing the original release. The best bits of the original special features are included. The film it's self is 80's sci-fi at it's best it starts out with a space ship entering orbit and then turns into a pretty straight forward 80's military action film and towards the middle reverts back into a terrestrial sci-fi action and suvivalism film. It's really one of Schwarzenegger's best performances in that he actually appears to be threatened for once. The problem with his films is not that he's a bad actor, it's that he has this aura of invincibility due to his physique and generally cool demeanor but that all gets stripped away when he is confronted by an alien creature who is bigger, stronger and more equipped in literally every way. Arnold gets chased and beaten and brutalized by the Predator and never does the thought cross your mind, "awww Arnie could take that guy what a phony movie" for example the fight scene with Bennett in the film Commando. This film also features a great score, a wonderful premise, and an involving cast of supporting characters who all have great moments throughout the course of the film. I highly recommend this film to any one but the decision is up to as to your preferred format although I quite like the quality of this Blu-Ray.
