Escaping From Houdini: 3 (Stalking Jack the Ripper)

This book. Oh my god, this book was incredible. 3 books in and I still can never work out who the killer is and still feel as shocked as I did when I read Stalking Jack the Ripper. I really enjoyed it, at first I was worried it would be a little slow and maybe not as good as the previous two, but within a few chapters, it was an intense as the others. I was a little frustrated with the introduction of the new love interest, throughout Audrey Rose has been a strong character who didn't have any romantic moments until the last book, and even that took two full books to get to. I love Thomas's character too much to want to see her with any other, and I think she did too ultimately. I loved the brief steamy make-outs scattered throughout, whenever the book got too serious a scene would be thrown in to ease the tension and make my heart flutter like I was the one in the room with him, not her. I must have highlighted a passage in every scene that was remotely romantic! I loved that we got to see more of Liza also, when we were first introduced to her in the first book I was worried she would be used simply as a plot device to highlight how different Audrey Rose is, but instead she is shown to be the strong character she is and it just shows that you can come across as a more traditional Victorian young girl but still be as badass as the non-traditional girl. I loved their relationship, it was just as it should be between family, there was no competition, despite Liza not being interested or familiar with the work Audrey Rose does, she was still included and still listened and supported them all during their time. Just as Audrey Rose was there for Liza. It made me wish I had the same depth of relationship with cousins of mine. I cannot wait for the fourth, and I really really hope the series will never end!

Love these books , really well written, full of adventure, mystery & plot twist

This is the third instalment in the Stalking Jack the Ripper series by Keri Maniscalco featuring the crime solving duo of Audrey-Rose and Thomas. Though not normally a fan of historical fiction I picked this series up based on rave reviews and boy am I glad I did! Let me just start off by saying that Audrey-Rose is a fantastic character. Keri manages to get the perfect balance between crime solver and society belle that makes her such a believable character. I love her inner dialogue and the way she doesn’t shy away from the gruesome parts of crime solving. Shes such a strong female character which, luckily, are becoming more and more prevalent in YA fiction these days. Thomas Cresswell is Audrey-Roses swoon worthy crime fighting partner and a character I certainly didn’t hesitate in falling in love with. Hes the profiler, think criminal minds, to Audrey-Roses hard science approach and they make for the perfect pair. Their romance makes for an amazing sub-plot especially with it being almost forbidden to have a relationship outside of marriage at the time. I enjoyed the premise of the book, a moonlight carnival with a secret, led by the mysterious and charming Mephistopheles get put under scrutiny when gruesome murders begin happening based around tarot cards. Mephistopheles, himself is an interesting character, he is one of the few people who truly effect’s Audrey-Rose and this led to some slight tension in her relationship with Thomas. The only downfall to this book was Its predictability. In the first two books I was gripped until the very end, having my suspicions, but never being sure who the murderer was. However, I worked this one out half way through the novel and spent the rest of it waiting for the characters to figure it out. Despite this I still raced through until the end wanting to see the characters thought processes and their deductions, which is one of the things I enjoy about this series. This book was a 4.5/5 for me! I love the world and characters that Maniscalco writes and will definitely be picking up the fourth book in the series which she has recently announced will be the last. I will almost surely have some Audrey-Rose and Thomas withdrawal symptoms when the series ends!

I know some people didn’t like this book, I can see why, but I loved it!! There were moments that I felt so sad for the characters in this series because of what was happening, but at the same time I really enjoyed the plots 🩵 The romance in this book was full of tension and was like a love triangle but in the best way, I hated it at first but then fell in love with both the male characters and felt bad for them both! I would say that this book may be my fav in the series! 💖

Arrived without any marks on the dust cover so that’s an amazing start! The story itself is absolutely amazing, couldn’t recommend it enough!

This is the third book in the Jack The Ripper series and I very high expectations for this one. I absolutely love magic and illusions so Houdini certainly made me want to read this. I’m not sure, however, this one tops my favorite of the series so far, which was the first one of the series, Stalking Jack The Ripper. I find this novel a hard one to review because there wasn’t anything I didn’t like. In general I just missed some real twists and thrills, even though the travelling entertainment on board (The Midnight Carnival) did its best every night to dazzle the people on board of the RMS Etruria on their way to New York and the reader at the same time. The travelling company’s leader is run by the enigmatic Mephistopheles and it wasn’t only Audrey Rose Wadsworth who was under his spell. I could see his attraction and the fact that he hid his face behind a mask only made him more of a fascinating enigma. Of course I felt bad for Audrey Rose’s partner-in-crime Thomas Cresswell who doesn’t hide his love for her but I never believed for one minute she would really fall for Mephistopheles. The author alludes to this rivalry and a (faux or not so faux after all?) love triangle for most of the novel and it might not be what some readers hoped for since Thomas Cresswell is just perfect but it’s good to see that there might be another person who matches well with Audrey Rose. I enjoyed reading about this potential new love interest, the author did a great job with Mephistopheles. I felt bad for Thomas but also for Mephistopheles because I believed he was really into her too so whoever she decided on, someone was going to lose. As far as the mystery and murders go, it was all very mystifying but there were not really enough clues along the way to really be able to figure this one out although I wasn’t quite surprised when the true killer’s identity was revealed either. I was intrigued by the character of Houdini (although none of his tricks were explained which was not totally unexpected but still a bummer) and I loved that the author included a photo of the real Houdini in the book which made it feel more authentic but he didn’t get a lot more attention than any of the other characters and I kind of expected the story to focus more on him. Overall it was a good read but I think I missed a real ace up the sleeve in this book. I’m still debating whether I’m going to continue with the series or not.

I really enjoyed this book! I’m very intrigued to see what’s next for Audrey-Rose and Thomas.

My heart 😭😭😭 Thomas Cresswell should be protected at all costs 😍😍😍 The book definitely suffers from a lack of Thomas and Audrey Rose being teamed up during the majority of this book, subsequently suffering from a lack of Thomas Cresswell in this book, hence the lower rating I am giving it, which is more noticeable as the book sings when they are together Houdini did not feature as much as I thought he would have considering his name is in the title, which feels slightly misleading but is keeping with the theme of having a famous historical figures name there to attract more people to a name they recognise

Eu adorei a história e a construção narrativa em consonância com a desconstrução dos personagens para a resolução dos assasinatos no Etruria. Inesperado, mas incrivelmente bem construído e permeado pela atmosfera mágica e ilusória. O leitor adentra a atmosfera do Moonlight Carnival e se torna parte do jogo de ilusões construído. Um verdadeiro truque de mágica!

Ich war schon von Band 2 absolut begeistert, aber Band 3 hat das noch mal auf ein neues Level gehoben. Wir befinden uns diesmal auf einem Schiff auf dem Weg nach Amerika und Wadsworth und Creswell müssen wieder ein paar Morde aufklären. Die ganze Verstrickung und das Motiv des Mörders wurden hier noch besser als in Band 2 und durch den Karneval lernen wir einige sehr interessante neue Charaktere kennen. Diese stellen auch die Beziehung der Hauptprotagonisten auf die Probe, aber nicht in einer Art und Weise das man nur die Augen verdrehen kann. Ich kann es kaum erwarten Band 4 zu lesen!

Es mi favorito de toda la saga. Tiene magia, misterio, romance y fantasía. 100% recomendado
