Invest in the best, brilliant colors and buttery smooth.
I have tried many other colored pencil budget brands like Soucolor, Kalour, Buttfuner, Steadtler, Faber Castell, and Artist’s Loft, but there is no match for these Prismacolor Premier pencils. All the brands mentioned here are oil based pencils while Prismacolor Premiers are wax based pencils. I bought this set of 48 pencils almost a decade ago from Amazon and it works still as good as new. Of course, the price so much lower than they are currently. I recently tried e of the Bay site for a bigger set, but unfortunately, the pencils I received were counterfeit. When I compared them to the quality of these that I got from Amazon, there was a lot of difference. I wrote to the company and they wrote back that Amazon is one of the authorized sellers so make sure that the set that you get is directly from Amazon and not a third-party. I am uploading a butterfly I made this week using these pencils. The colors are just brilliant. The trick is to lightly shade with the pencil and add layers upon layers while blending the colors rather than pressing down hard. The more you layer even a single color the brighter it looks, and there is a slight sheen to the art due to the wax based nature of these pencils. These wax based pencils must be stored properly as the wax can bloom after a while within incorrect storage of the pencils or artwork, but they are buttery soft and go on so much better than the oil based pencils that are harder. I invested in a good sharpener, one of the vintage Panasonic desk based electric sharpeners, and I have never broken a prismacolor during sharpening. This set of 48 is a great starter set as it gives a lot of shades and some new shades can be created by blending. I have found that it is sometimes better to limit the number of shades to about 48 for the most portability, but still have enough shades to create an artwork. Also limiting the number of shades brings out creativity with different techniques rather than just using different shades. In the end, having bought a lot of cheaper brands from Amazon to get a bigger range of shades. I keep going back to my 48 set of Prismacolor pencils.

Shocked. That's all I can say.
I've been doing pen and ink artwork (and some airbrush) since 1976. I didn't stray far from that, but over the years, I'd say a half a dozen times I've purchased a small set of color pencils to test out doing color. Disappointed every time. I didn't want to buy expensive ones so it's so obvious now what the problem was. Also, I tried water color pencils and I just don't care for the look, but the others were all cheapo sets. i picked up the urge again to try color recently. I've been doing a lot of chip carving lately, and it got me back into that 'artist' side. I have been doing motion graphics, and graphic design for about 15 years, so I'd gotten away from the real artwork, done by hand. I started reading reviews and it was obvious very quickly that Prismacolor was going to be the right one. I opted for the premier as all the tutorials and reviews I read/watched showed them. I finally decided to get this set. the Premier 48 w/tin. Let's just say that within 10 minutes I knew that my whole work of artwork had just changed. It was instantly obvious this is what i needed. now, let's all admit, there were some advancements in color pencils a few years back that really changed things. i'd kind of thought about it since then, but never got the urge until recently if you are like me and had never tried a professional quality set, but are looking now, you will be shocked at how well these work. The way they blend and build is hard to describe. I am absolutely in love with them. The big pros for me, are; 1. Tthey have very soft cores so they are very smooth to work with. 2. Even though the cores are soft, they are also thick. They do not break. At least in the time I've had them they haven't. not a single break yet, and frankly that was one of my disappointments of every other set i tried. (tip, get a decent sharpener, i like the Prismacolor sharpener here http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004ZDL0K2/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2MUG68SOZ3Z4A&coliid=I27HS01U8F39HZ but the tip is, hold the pencil stationary and rotate the sharpener, not the pencil. works great!) A decent sharpener makes a very big difference 3. The amount of complimentary shades that come with even the 48 pack is nice. I do wish I'd gotten the 72 now, but i wasn't sure about using them at all. I will be replacing these with the 72 next time. cons; none, if I had to find one, it would be price and really it's not that bad anyway.. I know we all like to save money, but this low of a cost for something that provides so much is just flat out a bargain. I considered trying copic markers a while back. get a few hundred out if you want to try that. This is cheap.

BUY THEM!
AMAZINGGG I love them so much, they blend really well and layer amazingly. I can blend them pretty well with just a Q-tip, but I hope to one day get better blenders. My artwork got multiple compliments and people said it looked like watercolor. I love them and only wish I had enough to buy the 120 set, unfortunately that’s out of my price range, but this does just what I need to and all the colors are very vibrant. And I can get any color I don’t have by layering and blending.

Can't go wrong
I tried Prisma for the first time this week and loved them. I had ordered several different cases because I liked different colors in each set until I saw how many overlapping colors there were. In the end I decided to send all the small sets back and jump off the cliff and buy the whole 150-pencil set. I've never in my life had a full large set. In the end, it was cheaper spending the big money up front for the big set. I have not sharpened any pencils yet, but i am expecting the typical breakage that I see regular Prisma fans talk about that they deal with because they like the way they color. They felt good in my hand and definitely push down less and still get good color. I got this for bible notes and highlighting. I am not sure why I would need 150 pencils for bible highlighting so I guess it's a reason to buy some new coloring books! I guess in the end, after trying several cheaper brands, I went with Prisma. These are very expensive for my budget, but oh well. That's what payment plans are for! I hope i am happy with the big set.

Best colored pencils I have owned
The price of these was less than half that and office or art supply store. The colors are smooth and even. The metal case protects the pencils and makes them easy to carry.

Super pigmented pencils
These color pencils are super pigmented and go on super smoothly! I did a bunch of tests with them coloring both lightly and with more pressure to see how both applications of it would look. I also tested them against different brands to see how they would hold up and was very satisfied by the results. The pros are that the colors are very vibrant, and apply super smoothly. They don't have that "chalky" look that some other cheaper colored pencils have. I also found that you don't have to press too hard to get color payoff. Previously I only used casual and cheaper colored pencils which required me to apply a lot of pressure to get the pigment I was looking for but that's not a problem with these Prismacolor pencils. Mixing colors to create gradients is super easy and the colors really blend together in a seamless way. There is also a wide array of colors and shades available in this kit that is great for someone who needs a pack that covers all the bases. My main cons are the price point. The quality of the pencils are fantastic so I don't regret the purchase but I do wish they weren't so expensive. And lastly it's more of a nitpick, but I wish the colored pencils were arranged in color order. The colored pencils don't appear to be in any order, but again it's not a deal breaker, just a slight annoyance. Overall I'm super pleased with these! I'd definitely recommend them for casual and professional artists.

A good set for more vibrant and better colors, only would get it on sale again.
Bought this as a gift. The person who is using this thinks the pencils are smooth, vibrant, and super blendable, making them great for both beginners and experienced artists. The soft wax core lays down rich color with very little pressure, and layering or creating gradients feels effortless. They do wear down faster than harder pencils, and the softness and sharp can make fine details a bit tricky, but for lush color, easy shading, and a buttery feel, they’re hard to beat. They are durable but I don’t think it would be a long term 5 years+.

Love these pencils
I love these pencils, the colours are vibrant and they blend so well. The soft core makes them beautiful to use but you do need to sharpen them often, so make sure you get a good sharpener too. The 48 set has a good range of colours, but no greys. Postage from US to Australia was so quick, Thanks Amazon.
