Hopkins Towing Solutions 50002 Smart Hitch Backup Camera and Sensor System

Lasted 5-1/2 years of daily use, 5 days a week.... Installed this in less than 2 hours in July 2016... The license plate mount gives the camera a downward bias, but it is acceptable. I chose to bring the wire to the driver side, opened up the panel that hides the emergency vehicle jack. I drilled down JUST inside the edge of that panel. Don't plunge, as the gas lines are about an inch below the body. Don't go too deep. The recommended drill bit wasn't big enough in that part of the body. I wound up drilling bigger and filling with silicone after I got the wire through. Ran the wire up under the interior plastic trim panels, along the bottom of the doors, up behind the fuse panel (had to pull 3 screws here), and out at the base of the corner post trim. Wire was long enough and wound up leaving a coil zip tied inside the Driver's door fuse panel. With my hitch and trailer, I found the "normal" mode was more conductive to hitching up... less lines to count. Once I figured out which line to use when the trailer was jacked up high enough for hitching, I hit the mark, every time... so easy. No more denting up my license plate... After reading reviews, I took a silicone adhesive product called "Through the Roof" which is known for its water proofing properties, and I gooped up the connections on the back side of the camera, sensors, and circuitry a few days before my install. I also wrapped the push connection with electrical tape. Fingers crossed we won't have any problems. My full size spare tire made the factory connection positioning challenging, but i found something that worked. Every camera I looked at on Amazon had good and bad reviews... it pretty much seemed like a crap-shoot which one to buy... but at the end of the day, chose this one, and two weeks in, I'm happy. I have turned the volume down to the lowest setting because 9/10th of the time I'm in reverse, I'm already hitched up. I used the attached peel and stick to put it on the dash, down by my inspection stickers in the lower left corner of my windshield. . Hasn't bothered me there yet. Edit January 2021... I guess my preemptive sealant trick worked. Using this vehicle as a daily driver, and the camera still functions perfectly several years later... Edit December 2021... The camera finally died... 5-1/2 years... I've got no complaints, and I'm going to buy another one! I haven't played with connections to see if something leaked... just kind of assuming water got into the electronics behind the license plate.

Works perfectly and instals as advertised. Sealed the camera Box with silicone to avoid water inside as described by other buyers. Have a 1500 silverado crew cab and had about 4 feet of wire left over so really long enough. Edit March 2019. Had issues with backup lines witch stopped working. Display showed only hitch lines even if they were off in the menu. Still on waranty so contacted Hopkins and never got an answer. Instead I contacted Amazon and within 2 hours I got an answer and they shipped me a replacement unit immediately. Waiting for replacement to arrive to change the defective one. Thanks Amazon. Édit march 18 2019. Replaced the display and camera after receiving them. Problem was that the licence plate was pinching the sensor wire. This is obviously a vice in fabrication of the camera module since the wires of the backup sensors wires can touch the licence plate and be damaged by vibrations.

I bought one of these for my truck, and my wife liked it so much she asked if I would put one in her car. My truck install was no issue, but my wife's 2013 VW Beetle wasn't so easy. I pulled the taillight assembly to figure out which wires to tap. I installed everything loosely and tested. Worked great, so I reassembled everything. When done, the camera would come on in reverse, but the screen was solid blue. Some internet research showed the likely cause to be low voltage to the camera/display. Her car uses 921 bulbs for the backup lights, which draw 18 watts each. My initial test had the left rear light assembly unplugged, so the missing bulb gave enough power to run the camera/display. Plugging everything in dropped the voltage too low. I was considering a relay at first, but then I decided to try an LED version of the reverse light bulb, since they draw less power. That worked great, and I only had to change a bulb. I bought the cheapest ones available, because the more expensive ones have resistors built into them to mimic the current draw of an incandescent bulb. Some cars throw an error code if the current draw is off, and the more expensive LED bulbs try to prevent that. In my case I needed lower current draw to leave enough power for the camera/screen. Hopefully this helps if someone else runs into the same problem. One last thing - the cheap LED bulbs only work when installed one way. For bayonette style bulbs like 921's or 194's, you can plug them in 2 ways. If they don't work at first, just pop them out and flip them around. I love the camera, monitor, and sensors. Great design as others have already mentioned.

I'm pretty happy with the unit but took a long time to get it to the point where I could use it as no one stocks the extension cables ? You have to contact Hopkins towing solutions and they will send one out to you free of charge but it takes forever ! If you're thinking about buying one call Hopkins right away order the cable the same day you order the unit because you're going to need it ! I have a newer Dodge ram 1500 crew cab with the 5.7 foot box you have to go through the firewall as the undercarriage of the truck is all insulated With a 5 foot extension you can put it anywhere you like with no problems without nowhere nesr long enough to make a clean install The seven pin plug works like a charm It's a really decent kit for the money better than most I've seen for more $$. Screen is a tad bit small but with good driving skills and commonsense the screen is well big enough! Camera and back up sensors work very well just take the time to adjust the sensors properly you will enjoy it ! I looked at many wireless units with the lag or freezing there's no point going wireless the technology just isn't there yet if you could get one that runs at 5.8 GHz instead of 2.4 GHz it might be a little bit more user-friendly This unit is really easy to install might need some sort of wire insulation as you get closer to the firewall as the exhaust gets a little close to the frame rails but just take your time and do it right!
