I just ordered this and I noticed if the batteries die, instead of shutting the water off, it allows the water to run. Am I missing something?

Low batteries won't leave the water running. The timer needs power to open the valve but the valve will close itself otherwise. However, my timer had a damaged rubber diaphragm and that caused a 1 gallon/minute leak. Leaked silently for more than a week.t. That will add $100-200 to this months water bill.

Does this unit have a waterproof cover?

It needs to have water pressure to open and close the valve, so I doubt it will work with just gravity from the rain barrel.

How does it know when it has rained and how much it rained in order to "delay"? How long does it "delay"?

It does not have a rain sensor. You have to turn a dial setting the rain delay for 24 -72 hours etc.

A simple non programming timer.

This product is simple to use, just set the frequency, the amount of “on” time. You can also turn it on manually for testing. Thing to know is the time you make adjustments is the time the timer turns on!
