Very pleased, and I AM fussy...
I am fussy about products of this type... If a product purports to provide any sort of health benefit, or provide some measure of pain relief or comfort, it better deliver on the promise or I'm going to send it back. I have/had shoulder surgery on the horizon so I researched the heck out of these product types... a machine of this sort is actually a requirement in the presurgery literature at the Ortho surgical center where I was scheduled. There are other, a little pricier, options with great reviews, and I will say I have not tried any of them so they may be superior in some way I'm not aware of. My target qualities were : 1) Quiet operation. I don't want to rely on something for pain relief/comfort that is consistently annoying to hear. 2) Reliable operation. No leaks, no fuss, no muss, does what it advertises. 3) Ease of use. if it takes forever to prep and/or operate and is cumbersome then its a no go. Quick overview. Very simple programming and operation, clear tank with a solid handle that makes it easy to see how much ice is left. Ice and water levels are marked clearly inside the tank (Ice first, water second, though I reverse them as I fill the tank and you'll see why later) the included universal/shoulder pad/bladder and elastic straps are totally adequate for the coverage needed, I am a big guy (over 6 1/2 feet tall, 230+ lbs) and it was completely satisfactory. My Prep: Standard ice cubes melt very quickly in water, so my approach was to get a package of plastic picnic cups (roughly 4" tall, 3" across the top) and clear a shelf in my freezer for them. I then fill and get a dozen or so frozen, refilling afterwords, and I found I did this only once a day. (hint: running a little lukewarm water over them in the sink quickly releases those giant cubes) Pouring water in the tank after the ice is in will prematurely melt some of that ice, so I filled the tank to the ice line with water first, then put my ice in the water... generally 9-11 of my giant cubes and then take up the slack with a couple of cups of regular ice cubes. This worked exceptionally well, and I was able to get 4+ 30-minute icing sessions a day, without refilling or fussing with the tank in between sessions, and while the last session was less cold than the first it was still very sufficient **Note that your regular home ice maker will never keep up with your needs** Once the tank is full, the top attaches very easily, as does the pad/bladder. The included water hose is leak free and plenty long enough for comfortable use almost anywhere, There are only 2 settings on the unit: Pump speed / Water volume (LPM or Liters per Minute) and Time. Its worth noting that if the water is not quite as cold as you like, then using the highest pump rate speeds the heat transfer from the target area and thus improves the cooling effect. Noise. This unit does create sound at the 2 highest pump rates but is very minor when sitting right next to me on the floor. I would describe the sound as kind of a faint white noise buzz which was very easily absorbed into the background with the TV or stereo on, or during a conversation. I actually had to purposefully listen for it to identify it during first use. Cold/Cooling. If you think you can get by with standard ice packs after a surgery, maybe you will, but this is much better. I did try ice packs directly for contrast and it wasn't even a close contest. I had extensive rotator and associated shoulder tendon surgery, and in my surgeons own technical terms once he got into my shoulder, it was a "hot mess"... that's a direct quote. ( I have pictures to prove it) I am very pleased with this product, it delivers on its promise and though I rarely leave reviews I decided I wanted to leave a complete review here because health care is already nonsensically expensive and something as simple and necessary as this should be inexpensive and performant... this item is both. ** edit** I have had 50+ uses so far and all elements of the unit (including pad) are in great shape I hope this is helpful in your research!

Great machine - quiet, consistent, great value
My ortho doctor recommended that I purchase a cold therapy machine to use after my shoulder surgery...let me tell you, I am glad I did. I looked at several brands and price levels and decided on this one. It was by far the best home health type purchase I’ve ever made. My wife was able to easily place and strap the universal pad to my shoulder (although I would recommend purchasing better Velcro straps, these worked just fine). The ice/water stayed cold for several hours, and being able to run it for 30 minutes at a time was great. I used it basically 24/7 for the first 5 days. Much better than getting up and down refilling ice packs etc. I HIGHLY recommend this product - and we’ll be able to use it again and again for different body parts thanks to the easy to use universal pad.

Requires a helper for the shoulder
Great circulating machine. Mine was purchased to provide pain relief after a arthroscopic shoulder surgery. Some benefits noted: quiet operation, auto-stops if a water hose connection is not secured, comfortable circulation pad which takes contours relatively well, intuitive digital operation with readout, hose length just sufficient with the unit placed on the floor near the patient, well constructed. Some detractions noted, in particular for shoulder usage: hose connection at the shoulder is difficult to engage without an assistant (think needing to use the restroom and not wanting to heave the ice bucket unit with you) - it's solid but requires a firm push to snap lock the connection, which may not be possible in your first days out of surgery - I had to use a set of channel lock pliers with flexible plastic handles held in my mouth while I pushed in each of the two hose connections in place, no other detraction. Note that you can use the longest of the 3 velcro ended straps to position the pad on your body, and the medium length straps around your shoulder to cinch it down tight. This way you only need to remove the medium length strap end to remove the assembly, when then can be stretched overhead to position it again. Also note that the bucket size permits inserting frozen water bottles as the ice source. Having 2 sets of water bottles permits you to swap out bottle sets from your freezer, rather than consuming messy ice and melted water.

Excellent product
I bought this machine for use following hip replacement surgery. It was easy to assemble, fill with both ice and water and easy to operate. It worked like a charm to both counter any iswelling or pain resulting from my surgery. Upon using it for a few days I noticed that water was leaking from the pad. I reached out to Vive Health customer service and Melisa was prompt in responding. The unit was under a full year warrant so she simple sent out a new pad at no cost to me. Couldn't ask for a better response. Very please with this unit and the company. Highly recommend.

It does what it claims -- and that's impressive....
I recently had a "new" knee inserted and want to better manage the seeming never-ending PT and icing regimens. So I decided to see if this machine simplifies things. It does. What I like is that it works but it's not as convenient as it easily could be, manufacturer might consider these suggestions for improvement: 1) Make hose twice as along to maximally free-up the user. 2) Include in the kit a simple pan for making ice -- because if you are using this several times each day, most people don't have ice-makers that can meet the demand. Ideally the tray would be a tiny bit smaller than the bottom of the reservoir and make a large cube that's about 2-2.5" thick. The tray would be about 4" high so as to limit spillage when putting it into home freezer. Once separated from the tray, this cube would minimize the additional daily need for ice. I recommend that users initially NOT start icing body parts at maximal flows and times. This device cools sites much better than conventional ice-holding pads or wraps and it's easy to over-do it. (IOW, you can't rely on what you feel to tell the difference.) Better to start a bit on the conservative side and work to the more aggressive than the other way around. Finally, expect a bit of condensation to occur at the hose connections while the machine is in-use. It doesn't appear to be leakage. Also, a nice aspect is that once a cycle is done, there doesn't appear to be much if any water remaining in the hose or the pad -- thus limiting any likely mess when disconnnecting. These features make it easier for the user to be his own "nurse" in terms of setting things up and running a cycle.

Hose leaks, bad motor, terrible customer service.
I received this device the day before my rotator cuff surgery. I set it up and discovered the hose leaked where it connects to the shoulder pad. I called Vive and spoke with a real nice guy who said they would send a replacement part. Since I told this person my surgery was the next day and I really needed this thing to work, I assumed they would over-night the part. Later that day, I got an email saying it wouldn't even ship for three to five business days so I went to the hardware store and got a barb fitting that would jury-rig the connections and made it work. Now, it has been almost a week and I finally got an email saying they shipped the part out. In the mean time, the pump has started to make strange noises and I don't how much longer this thing is going to work. PROS - Variable speed motor. Set it on high to get the pad cold quickly and then turn it down to where you need it. Very quiet unless the motor goes belly up like mine did. Do not underestimate the ability of an ice pump to greatly diminish pain and swelling. CONS - Maximum time is thirty minutes then it shuts off. My surgeon indicated continuous application and that was a real hassle to keep it going. The very nice people that answer the phone don't keep their word. It is the worst kind of customer service - they make you think they are going to help you but in reality, they just ignore you.

Great Recovery Aid!
Sports have taken their toll and this year I needed a few interventions to get my fitness goals back on track. This Vive Cold Therapy machine is absolutely amazing! It's easy to use, quiet, and delivers effective cooling where I need it. The gel hydro-pad is large and easy to keep in place. I had stayed away from hydro because I thought it would be a hassle with no significant gain over my go-to: frozen peas or corn. I wish I had purchased this years ago! TIP: I use frozen 16-oz water bottles (3) along with one large cup of ice to stay cold longer while allowing me to quickly replenish the cold. For my recent knee scope, our refrigerator ice maker couldn't keep up but 9 small frozen water bottles allowed me to keep the unit cold non-stop -- just swap out the 3 thawed bottles with frozen ones.

Out of Warranty Breakdown
This product performed very well when I initially bought it. I used it for cold therapy following total hip replacement. It helped me so much! It was amazing. After I recovered and didn't need it any more, I put it back in its original shipping box and stored it in a safe place. I had my other hip replaced this year, and was very excited to know that I had this wonderful little machine. However, setting it up my first night home after surgery, it would not work. I then waited a couple of days because of my condition, and tried again. Again, it did not work. I spent about an hour and half trouble shooting, and could see no problem. I knew that the machine was out of warranty by a few months, but contacted the company. The company was nice, and asked a lot of questions. After I answered all the questions, they requested that I make a video of everything that I already answered and to send them my purchase invoice number. They reviewed the video and then asked me to do a couple of things like blow through the connecting tubes. That did not work. Then they wanted me to disassemble the top of the machine and take pictures of the wiring and other things. It was at this point, that I gave up. I was struggling with post surgical recovery, had to buy another icing product, and am not a mechanic. Be aware that this machine, at least in my case, did not last for long. I used it about 6 wks the first time, and then it was packed and stored safely. It was an expensive purchase to have to send out to the trash after using only for a short period of time.

Top of the line
Excellent product for people who had back surgery and for pain management

Excellent........nearly
This does exactly what it says. It is robust and contrary to a few reviews the pipes fit perfectly. They are a sturdy click fit so I can only think they are not being fitted properly. Buying bags of ice will be insufficient to keep up with demand, so as others have suggested use small drinks bottles filled with water and frozen. Keeps the water very cold for a good couple of hours. My only observation is that the three velcro straps it comes with, although excellently made, are too strong. Any movement after knee replacement can be very painful, and removing these straps can be difficult. They stick to anything they can. They literally have to be torn off which can be an issue. It is a weird complaint that they are too effective, however the pad doesn't need to be on too tight as that restricts the water flow anyway. Excellent machine with quiet motor and great build. You do not need more than 30 minutes at a time, however if you do, using not so cold water, just push the start button again.

Great for recovery
I’ve recently had knee surgery and this has been an essential part of my recovery. I would recommend using bottles of frozen water instead of ice and mine stays cold all day. Easy to use and definitely highly recommend.

Ice Relief in an instant
Once you have the ice made up it’s quick and easy to use Working well after knee replacement surgery as it mixes ice and cold water it’s not as cold as ice alone and can be used more frequently Very quiet in use even on full pump cuff velcro straps are large and hold the knee sleeve in place well

Brilliant and perfect for pain.
Arrived today and it's brilliant. Am waiting for shoulder surgery. The coldness on my shoulder is perfect, it makes my pain more bearable and will be perfect after I have had surgery. I wish I had known about this machine months ago... Came across it on you tube.
