This new book by authors Jane Emerson and Patricia Babtie follows on from their award winning book, the Dyscalculia Assessment. Once careful assessment has identified the particular numeracy difficulties your pupils may have, the Dyscalculia Solution provides a practical teaching guide for addressing and solving those difficulties. The Dyscalculia Solution includes step-by-step instructions on how to teach pupils to use whole numbers by talking and reasoning about them, and communicating their thinking in a verbal, diagrammatic and written form. The book includes scripts to emphasise the importance of using the correct language to develop numerical thinking, as well as teaching objectives, activities and games which are important for fostering a positive attitude to numeracy. Each new concept builds on previous understanding so that new facts are derived by reasoning from known facts. The Dyscalculia Solution is ideal for use with primary school children, but can easily be adapted for older students, and is invaluable for SENCOs, TAs, educational psychologists and mainstream teachers, keen to support students with numeracy difficulties in their class. Accompanying materials in both print and electronic formats to support busy teachers by providing lesson plans and worksheets are available with this book. Review: Thorough and well documented. - While there are a lot of "expert" books for learners with dyscalculia out there, this one is well supported by the research literature. The authors provide many resources in the book. No need to fight with access codes and too many "games" as found in the Bird publications. This is my go to book when facilitating professional development for working with learners with math difficulties. As a university professor, it is necessary for me to find the best resources for my students. This book is one I use and highly recommend. Review: The techniques provide very quick success and make the students feel like they can learn math - I have used techniques given in this book with students struggling with math. The techniques provide very quick success and make the students feel like they can learn math.

And I wasn't a poor teacher to begin with
I don't exaggerate when I say that reading and following just a little from this book has transformed my teaching. And I wasn't a poor teacher to begin with: I'm a well-regarded teacher with experience in a good state school. My initial understanding of this book is that it emphasises and focuses on teaching through the concrete, then representing things diagrammatically. This gives pupils a sound understanding of what our number and addition/subtraction/multiplication systems are representing - and the results are impressive. I use it for all abilities in my Y4 class - but this is a book that is useful for Y2-4 - and for interventions for the weakest in Y5.

Ideal for many
Great idea for those whp use this and tge accompanying book to look at mathematical weaknesses (query dyscalculia) and ensure knowledhe and gaps are supported with focused learning. This does not provide a recognised diagnosis on its own. But will help see who has issues and who has gaps or weaknesses or missed learning. That once bridged can support a learner hugely.

Excellent book for teaching maths
Excellent companion to the Dyscalculia Assessment but can be used as a stand-alone resource. Detailed information and ideas to ensure understanding of basic mathematical concepts which create a solid foundation for future mathematical learning. Games to practise each skill are also included.
