This was the text for my graduate-level development economics course. It's very thorough. It presents technical concepts and equations with good clarity. The only major shortcomings are that it lacks diversity in its examples, which are mostly from India; and seems lacking in its coverage of agricultural smallholders.

I needed this book for a senior level international economics class in college. It was very interesting, although I would like more realistic and current examples

A well written book and offer great insight into the world of developmental economics. At times some concepts are difficult to understand, but ultimately, after review, the concepts are understood. Overall a good book for an introductory course to developmental economics.

Das ist bei weitem das beste Buch über die Welt-Ökonomie. Erst beim Lesen dieses Buches versteht man das ganze VWL-Studium und findet es faszinierend! Debraj Raj ist ein begandeter Leherer der es schafft ganz super verständlich und ohne einen mit Formeln zu erdrücken das Funktionieren der Wirtschaft in der ganzen Welt (der Akzent liegt auf den Entwicklungsländern)zu erklären. Das Buch liest sich leicht und spannend. Sehr viel Geschichte und Zusammenhänge werden klar. Ist jedem VWL-er nur zu empfehlen.

Das Buch ist zwar schon ein paar Jährchen älter und die Situation in den einzelnen Ländern hat sich sicherlich in der Zeit geändert; dennoch gibt dieses Buch einen guten Einstieg in das Thema. Es gibt viele Beispiele, die anschaulich und in verständlichen (auch in englisch ;-) ) Worten die Zusammenhänge erklären.Mir ging es speziell um Microfinance und Mikroversicherungen. Diese Thematik war zum Veröffentlichungszeitpunkt noch in den Kinderschuhen; dennoch ist die grundlegende Theorie und die verbundene Problematik sicher dieselbe geblieben. Insofern trotzdem sehr hilfreich! Aktuelle Zahlen und Praxisbeispiele für meinen Bedarf finden sich dafür dann in den jährlichen Veröffentlichungen der einschlägigen Stiftungen, NGOs etc.

This is book is great for someone at the undergrad level (that's where i was first introduced to it) as an introduction to some of the most important theoretical work in Development Economics. The discussion of empirical evidence is not as much as one would like but that is understandable as the book was published a long time ago and empirical research has come a long way since then. Also great for someone preparing for the eco optional of the Civils (that's what i bought it for).

It is the recommended textbook for the MIT course 'Development Economics'. The contents are very intuitive. The basic math skills such as calculus, linear algebra, and linear regression are required. In the beginning, the learning curve is a little bit steep, but once you are used to it, you will enjoy the book a lot.
