Usually trimming pillar candle wick to about 6 millimeters (¼ inch) or shorter will keep smoking to a minimum. A flickering flame in a draft will also produce more smoke. Pillar candles should be burned in an area free from drafts. Thinner pillar candles are more likely to recover as soon as the draft is removed; the wax that dripped down off the candle will be consumed and should not create a wax puddle.
