VELODROME JUST ANOTHER BOARD GAME? âNO ITâS NOT!â Says games inventor Jack Jaffe*. Velodrome is probably the only CYCLING board game based on the Velodrome race - a two or three player game, taking some 45 minutes to play. All ages can play together on equal terms. A strategic game without dice reduces chance to a minimum. The gameâs pull me-push you mechanism is unique, replicating this aspect of the actual race. Taking 15 minutes to learn, it can be played by 8-88 years of age. Each player's cyclist goes twice round the track on the 20â x 20â games board. Each playerâs pack of 24 cards includes 14 Power Cards: let's say you play a seven card and I follow it with a six card. I don't just move six- I add your seven to my six and move 13! If you now play a 10, you add it to my six and move 16 . . . and so on. Player interaction is guaranteed! There's also slipstreaming and blocking, quadrant cards, bad luck cards and approved painkiller cards! If A gets well ahead, B can often overtake within two turns. Each player holds four - but only four - of his shuffled cards in his hand, so choice is limited. Although the total value of each player's power is equal, distribution varies. *Jack Jaffeâs "Save The President!" game so intrigued New York composer, games buff, Stephen Sondheim, he wrote inviting Jack to have dinner with him in Oxford when he was Visiting Professor of American Music. In autumn 1989, Jack had dinner with Stephen & lyricist John Weidman. When Jack returned to New York six months later, John Weidman told him he, Stephen and his friends were still playing the game.
