The Klingon Dictionary (Star Trek)

Arrived very quickly, which was great for me. I love Star Trek, and the Klingon """Language""" is very... interesting. Full of intentionally unorthodox pronunciation and structure. Marc Okrand really hit it off with this one, and his dictionary does, in fact, include a light grammar lesson and examples.

Wonderful book. I use it whenever I visit Qonos.

Some people might find this book to be a bit technical, but that does seem to be the point. It lays out the rules for proper Klingon in concise, well-organized chapters. It starts with a guide to letters and pronunciation. Then it moves on to noun and verb prefixes and suffixes. The rules do an excellent job of contrasting the language patterns with English. While we speak more commonly with an active voice (He hits the ball.), Klingon sentence structure translates most directly to what we would call passive voice (The ball is hit by him.). The book also notes that while the rules presented are the ones for proper Klingon, it is common to leave out some of the unnecessary or implied words for normal speech. After all, "Go!" is a bit faster than "Go right now!" in a battle situation. And this shortened military slang is said to carry over into normal daily speech quite often.There is a large translation vocabulary section, going both from Klingon to English and English to Klingon. Following that is a short section of common phrases (like "Where is the bathroom?")The book itself is a normal quality paperback. I see it getting well-used over time, and I'm sure it will hold up just fine.If you're interested in learning Klingon, you can't do any better than this book. It is well-organized, simple to understand, and provides a lot of good examples. I have only been reading the book for about a week, but I can fairly easily spell Klingon I hear on TV or in a movie, and I understand the occasional word. Once I get my vocabulary up, I'm sure I'll be able to understand it all.

I’m a big fan of linguistics and adding Klingon to the list of languages I’ve studied wasn’t originally in the plans but after decades of Star Trek fandom and a recent affinity for Klingons, it just made sense to buy this book and start studying.First, it’s a very fun read. The book doesn’t get bogged down in language rules although there are plenty of those. The entire time you spending reading, you’d never know that Klingons and their culture are a functional part of the Star Trek universe. It’s written as if the Klingon history and culture were a part of our world. That makes the book work and makes the study so much more fun and interesting.Second, listening to Klingons speak Klingon, especially in the new Discovery series where it is very prominent, is so much more fun after reading this book. It comes to life. I find myself listening intently to see what words I recognize.A ton of fun!

The book is great for learning Klingon particularly when used in tandem with the Duolingo Klingon course. Beyond its benefits for learning a created language the book is presented as if Klingons were real ( and at this stage a case could made both pro and con). And finally the book is so designed as to be very entertaining.

Good for the star trek fan who likes klingons

I am star trek fan but nothing compared to my girlfriend. I bought this book for her as a stoking stufer that I knew she would enjoy. She loved it and weThis Klingon "Dictionary" is really more of a fan book on the Klingon language. Most of the book is about Klingon syntax and language structure. There are not many English to Klingon translations. There are a lot more Klingon to English translations which sounds like the same thing but I find them less entertaining for some reason. That being said it is a well written fan book. It both acknowledges and covers what is missing from the book with statements like "starfleet has yet to approve a study into Klingon nutrition." This is a fun book. I don't think it would be very helpful on a trip to Kronos but it entertaining and my girlfriend loved it. Can't ask for more than that.

This book is probably the one reference you will need to start learning Klingon. Despite the name, it is not simply a dictionary of Klingon words, but also a grammatical reference for the beginner to tlhIngan Hol. It starts off by addressing the different characters, or rather sounds in the Klingon language. Then it covers the three types of words in Klingon - nouns, verbs and other words - along with prefixes and suffixes which denote what the subject and/or object are. This book also covers, albeit briefly, clipped Klingon, which, in a nutshell, is basically a shortened form of Klingon that is not quite grammatically perfect, but it's still Klingon.Finally, this book also includes a list of common Klingon words and their English translations, as well as a list from English to Klingon, not to mention, a list of common Klingon phrases, their English translations, and a pronounciation guide.

Was soll ich als lingonischlehrer dazu sagen? TKD ist einfach die Bibel des Klingonischen und enthält alle Grundlagen. Wichtig sei für den Anfänger aber die Anmerkung, dass es kein Lehrbuch ist, sondern nur die Grammatik also solche beschreibt. Zum Lernen empfiehlt sich das Buch "Klingonisch für Einsteiger".Im Übrigen haben ich diese Bestellung von TKD zurückgeschickt, da ich das Buch mit dem roten Cover haben wollte, aber das weiße erhielt. Beide sind inhaltlich identisch, aber ich wollte eben das neue rote Cover, und nicht das alte.

クリンゴン語の基本を学べます. 表紙から察せるとおり全文英語で書かれています. この本は前半/後半の2部構成となっていて,前半は発音の仕方,文法,名詞,動詞,構文や短縮形について書かれており,後半は英語-クリンゴン語の辞書となっています. よく使うであらうフレーズ集もあるので,そこだけ覚えておけば日常のふとした瞬間に使えるかもです. 面白半分や話のネタとして学ぶも良し,本気でクリンゴン語を学ぶも良し.そもそもクリンゴン人は戦闘種族なので戦闘用語が多いことを受け入れれば理解できる部分が増えます(挨拶は日本語で"何がほしい？"だし,"調子どう？"なんて言葉も"お前は健康か？"といったニュアンスになってしまう). ともあれ,STAR TREKなるSF作品のために,本物の言語学者であるMarc Okrand氏が創った人工言語,という面白い経緯を持った言語なので,その公式ガイドブックである本書は一読の価値有りです.PS:発音を本だけで学ぶのはなかなか難しい部分があります. そんな時はYouTubeで"Intro to Klingon"を検索しましょう. 他についても,インターネットと合わせて読めば,クリンゴン語により一層磨きがかかること間違いありません! それではQapla'
