We're Roaming in the Rainforest

This book serves as a delightful introduction to the Amazon Rainforest and is sure to hold the attention of even the youngest of preschool audiences with it's bright colors and well formed verses. The rhymes are very well done as the author introduces a new animal on each spread, beginning with the parrots in the morning and ending with jaguars and otters at night. Also included are some lesser known animals such as pink river dolphins, caimans, and leaf cutter ants. There's an excellent read aloud flow marking this a great choice for themed story times or school units on the Amazon. The illustrations here are very colorful and packed full of things to look at and enjoy. Slightly older children will gain information from the back sections that include brief descriptions of the peoples of the Amazon, more information about the animals described, and conservation efforts. It's this additional information in conjunction with the charm and beauty of the story itself that mark this as a great resource for both classrooms and young animal lovers. Recommended.

Bought this book to use for an art lesson. It's good for kids learning about rain forests.

Here's one to get them on their feet and using their bodies. Every page begins with a one word command (jump, crouch, hush, hide...) followed by which animal said it in a 4 line rhyming stanza. It teaches children about the rainforest animals and how they live. I love the map of the Amazon at the end to show where in South America it is. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the rhyming stanzas didn't have a very catchy rhythm. Not a deal breaker, but it doesn't make it a read aloud that kids will ask for again and again. However, if they are given the opportunity to act like each animal, maybe they will.

This is a good one for mixed age with preschool in there. The pictures and main story are colorful, simple and appealing to the very young. The last pages in the book offer more detailed information about the habitat, tribes and conservation efforts in the rainforest, more interesting for grade school kids. Overall, this was a great intro to our more detailed study of the rainforest.

I teach preschoolers and I'm always looking for books that can involve them in chanting or singing, to engage them more meaningfully in the story. This book has that, plus delightful illustrations, and very interesting and unusual animals to spark children's curiosity. I'd definitely recommend this book for early childhood professionals who are teaching their classes about the rainforest.

What a fab book for a rainforest topic! I have used this book during literacy, art and PE sessions as the story has such a good rhythm to it. Pictures are clear and full of detail - we used them as a starting point to create our own pictures and role play corner. Highly recommended.
