Join veteran crime-fighter Stephen Smith on a journey through the dark and dangerous world of the Metropolitan Police specialist firearms command from its inception in 1966, when the cold-blooded murder of three police officers sparked a revolution in the training of armed officers, to the present day. This unique police unit battled against the IRA in the 1970s, experienced its first operational shootings in the 1980s and underwent massive expansion in the 1990s. In the new millenium it fought against Dome raiders, kidnappers, and al-Qaeda terrorists, then worked to provide London with a secure environment in which to host the 2012 Olympic Games. From a gunman ordering cannabis smuggled in fried chicken during a siege to a deranged killer holding toddlers hostage, London's armed police have seen it all. With his wealth of first-hand experience, Stephen Smith has woven together historic and up-to date accounts of perilous and often famously controversial firearms operations across England's capital. Using hundreds of photographs, illustrations and drawings from several archived sources, this fascinating volume spans five decades of the Metropolitan Police's fight against crime and many of its photographs and illustrations have never been published before. Packed with detail and intrigue, Stop! Armed Police!' is a must-have for those with an interest in police firearms matters and is a captivating behind-the-scenes look at the dangerous business of policing London's streets. WELL OVERDUE.
Congratulations to Steve for stepping up to the mark and producing such an interesting book. Again I am biased as I worked with Steve who I count as a valued friend. I had to keep reading this book, it brought back memories and is a wonderful account of not only how the department developed into nineteen but also shows some of the extremes that the police have had to encounter over the years. He provides the detail that is not always reported, along with some sound reasoning behind the events. As stated this is but a fraction of all the incidents over the years. It is a book to be proud of. I have copies for my sons for Christmas, it will help explain what we did and why we were not always at home and the many times we left home, without warning, to go to work.

Great read if you are into Police books
I suppose anyone reading this book would be into the whole Police realm otherwise why would you buy this book? It's a well written and a well documented history of Metropolitan Police's armed unit with some very rare photos and insight from ex officers. Not much else to add apart from you are going to enjoy it if you are into that stuff, you don't however need any specialist knowledge to be able to read and understand. Written in plain English and without any police jargon so quite easily understood by the general public should you wish to read it.
