Falling Up

No child's library is complete without some Silverstein poems/prose books. I gave away all my Shel Silverstein books when I retired from teaching. Now I'm rebuying them for the little girls I babysit. His poems are fun and whimsical, and children get a kick out of them. Maybe I would've like poems more when I was young if his books were around. I taught 2nd through 5th graders, and even the 5th graders got a kick out of them.

Our family LOVES these books by Shel Silverstein! Not only are they enjoyable for adults, but our kids can’t get enough of them. At 5yrs and 6yrs old, our girls read these poems out loud with little help and with a lot of enjoyment!

Shell’s ability to draw the reader in with humor and life lessons is truly a gift. His books little treasures! I have and will continue to purchase his books for every child in my circle. These are the absolute best bedtime poems anywhere. His illustrations and wit are sure to bring a smile and a giggle with sweet life lessons weaved in for a lifetime 💜

My daughter and I started reading Shel Silverstein believe bed. I remember my grandmother reading these to me and my daughter has loved them! Timeless poems. ❤️

If your child resists reading and you are having a difficult time finding books that pique his or her interest, I implore you to give Shel Silverstein a try. He is one of those rare and gifted children's book authors who truly understands the odd, amazing and ever-so-fleeting world that children inhabit. His writing speaks directly to children with incredible wit, hilarity, wisdom and absurdity. He explores their dreams, hopes, fears and apprehensions through delightful metaphor, and without a drop of condescension (which children absolutely detest, and can usually smell from a mile away). From my own experience, I despaired that my 3rd grade daughter would ever pick up a book and read it cover-to-cover without the looming threat of punishment. But when I introduced her to Shel Silverstein's "A Light in the Attic" she took to it immediately. For the first time ever, I caught her up reading past her bed time and sneaking a book under her coat so she could read it in the car. She read "A Light in the Attic" it over and over. We soon purchased Shel Silverstein's other books, including "Falling Up", and my daughter loved them all. Most importantly, Shel Silverstein helped my daughter realize that reading can be fun and exciting, that it can inspire creativity, and that it can offer a window into other worlds and shared human experiences. Although she remains somewhat selective (in a way that I approve of - I don't expect her to like every book she is given, I certainly don't), my daughter has developed what I am confidant will be a life-long love of reading. And I thank the late Mr. Silverstein for the role he played in that!

I am collecting all this Authors books. This was at a great price. This book brings back childhood memories.

I got all 3 of these book of poems from this author for my grandbabies for Christmas. These books were so popular when I was a kid that there was a list at our school library of kids who wanted to check them out. When you were the one to have it you were the cool kid and everyone want to read it. When it came to my daughters, I got them for my daughters, but they really meant something to my oldest daughter. So much so that she’s the one who asked for her kiddos to have their own copies because they had ripped the dust covers on her copies. So they got the new books, but they got her torn dust covers. Lol. These poems stand the test of time…obviously given they’ve made an impact on 3 generations of a single family. The poems are funny, sometimes gross, sometimes thought provoking, and sometimes just plain weird. All things that draw kids in. I got all 3 of his poem books for the kiddos. They’re worth it.

Arrived in great condition! Fun book.

These poems are highly imaginative, some are dark, some are light. So if your trying to shelter you child from themes like death, isolation or bad behavior this book isnt for you. I grew up on these poems and I find them still to this day to be incredibly fun and make my 3 year old think. She has memorised all the titles of her favorite poems. We now only ready poems at bed time because of this book.
