How good is the retention being there isn't a strap to secure the Desert Eagle?

I have been very happy with the holster in all respects. Regarding your specific question; I have had no problems even when driving, tying my shoe or bending to pick something up. The holster is very closely molded to the weapon so it doesn't shift yet doesn't inhibit drawing. Also, the Desert Eagle has it weight in its favor. Clearly if you tip the holster upside down your eagle would fall out where as it wouldn't in a holster with a snap or Velcro closure. THen again, you don't have to deal with a closure if you need to produce the firearm quickly.

Will this fit with a desert egale with a rail on bottom?

Sorry, I didn't realize that the rail was on top. The one I have I bought in 1986. No rail then. So yes, it will fit.
