No kidding, the PC version plays better for me than the XBOX 360 version
I can't help but be amused by all the negative reviews of the PC version of GTAIV. So much complaining about SecuROM, Games for windows Live, and the Rockstar club thing. I own both the XBOX and PC versions, and I think the PC version is better. So you ask "How is this possible?" Let me explain: XBOX 360 Release - The Xbox 360 hardware performance specs haven't changed in 4 years and GTAIV makes this fact quite obvious. Some outdoor scenes slow down to around 10 FPS. Everyone knows that below 20-30 FPS, a game will begin to become unplayable. These slow downs can very frustrating during a car chase or a shootout. The 360 also has the graphics settings turned way down, likely due to the performance issues. It runs at 720P on an HDTV with anti aliasing turned off. Once you get up to a 46-50 inch TV, jaggies start to become annoying. It's not all bad with the 360 version. The game loads fairly quickly, even though you are forced to watch the entire intro sequence. PC Version - I'm running Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit on an i7 920 Quad core with 6 GB of DDR3 and a 295 GTX dual GPU video card. I run all of my PC games on a 52" 1080P HDTV. Even unpatched, the PC version runs very well on this rig. I have all the graphics settings cranked up to max and I get 60 fps through most of the game play. This makes car chases with other criminals and running from the police much easier to do. I went ahead and patched the game using the latest release and I haven't had any problems. I don't have any issues with the "Games for Windows Live" app that runs with the game, but the Rockstar club thing is sort of annoying. I'm not sure why it's there and I think it just adds to the load time of the game. The user is force to watch two sets of cut screens before starting game play. It's not so bad that the game deserves a single star when rating it. One major downfall of the PC port is that it's difficult to control with the mouse and keyboard. There are just too many buttons you need to be able to push and the keyboard can be a little clumsy. I happen to have the windows receiver for the xbox controller, so I fired that up and was able to use my 360 controller no problem. It seems to work better in most cases. Oh, and finally there's the secuROM thorn in everyone's side. Personally, I've never had problem with any game that has it built into it. This leads me to believe that all the claims that state it cripples computers and brings an end to world are completely blown out of proportion. The only part I hate it limited activations, but most publishers have ways to revoke the registration so you don't run out of activations (which is what GTAIV uses). As for the actual gameplay, GTAIV is a pretty decent game. Once you get past the cut screens, it's the same game on the PC and XBOX. It's my first GTA game, so it's all new to me. The story line is cool and the size of the Liberty City world is quite large. I do have three minor nits: - Shootouts can be difficult due to the way the autoaiming and take cover functions work. I would prefer just some old school 1st/3rd person shooter controls. - There's no auto aiming available while driving in a car. The only way to shoot from the car is to first start firing and then aim with the camera joystick. - There's no way to save the game mid-mission. This can lead to having to repeat the entire mission if you fail them before completion.

Disappointing
I have enjoyed all the PC versions of the grand theft auto series since GTA2. I was reluctant to buy GTV IV after reading all of its poor reviews, especially dealing with the Rockstar social club and microsoft live software that you have to install. After seeing that Amazon was only charging $13.99 for it, I decided that maybe it was worth a try. Installing the software wound up taking all afternoon, because you have to install 16 GB of data off 2 DVDs, then you have to download updated version of the game and Microsoft Live, and Adobe, SecureROM etc... This way they can track all your stats in the game online rather that on your computer. (Which I don't want to do). For some reason the rock star social club software decides that it needs to be running 24/7. Just what everyone needs, one more peice of software wasting CPU resources. After going through all that, the game ran poorly on my computer, which met the minimum requirements. In the end I decided that the game was not worth the hard drive space it occupied, and removed it. I will re-play Vice City again instead. Hopefully Rockstar Games will re-think their strategy before trying to publish another GTA game.

The 1 star reviews are outdated now
Rockstar has released patches that fix pretty much all the problems 1 star reviewers had. This game is EXTREMELY CPU heavy, don't expect to run this game on a dual core. What absolutely makes this game a must buy is the massive modding community. A recently released graphics enhancing mod called "IcEnhancer" makes this game near photo realistic(Youtube it)! After playing this game with near photo realistic graphics, I cannot touch my PS3 anymore...or look at any console graphics for that matter. The only problem I had with this game was the installation, I don't get why I had to create 2 accounts I was never going to use. I also have this game for PS3, and the PC version is far superior to the PS3 and Xbox GTA4 version because: *It is extremely hard to play with controller. Analogue sticks are a disgrace to gaming, controller controls are so bad, the game automatically LOCKS ONTO A TARGET when you aim. You might think this is easier compared to no aim assist on PC, but it is very hard and sometimes impossible(enemies ducking behind a car or wall, etc) to cycle through enemies with the auto lock, thus making it frustrating and easy to die. Moving is also clunky on console, GTA 4 has a weighted feel, like Killzone. It is hard to describe, but it feels like you're lagging when you're moving the camera of trying to move Niko with analogue sticks. Sixaxis controls on PS3 is also a gimmick. You can only fly helicopters, reload a weapon, and drive a motorcycle with sixaxis, and it is near impossible to fly/drive with it. *The console version runs at 20-30 FPS and frequently drops to 10fps when you blow things up or look far away(no fps drop when cars explode in PC version surprisingly for me) *The console version is very ugly and not full HD. GTA4 vanilla is very bland and ugly, even on max settings on PC(the only way to make it look good is through modding), so the console version is extremely ugly. There are jaggies everywhere, blurry shadows, blurry textures, texture/item pop in, low traffic, no night shadows, extremely low view distance, and more... *no modding support on PS3/Xbox. Modding massively expands the replay value and overall enjoy of games. Do you want to be a cop like in real life? There's a mod for that: LCPD first response. There's basically a mod for anything because the community is so huge. You can even replace the stupid real world look alike cars in GTA4 with real Ferrari's and stuff. MODDING IS NOT HACKING!!! * Minimum requirements in my opinion for smooth gameplay are: Quad core(CPU heavy game) 4gb+ of ram(it hogs ram like crazy) video card with over 1gb of vram(you need 2gb of vram to max out the game, it's stupid) 7200rpm hdd(you want the game to load as fast as you can because waiting 2-5minutes to boot up the game is no fun) Here are the list of mods I use: Icenhancer 1.3 ultimate textures v2 road textures by dkt70 real traffic spawn and over 40 individual car mods and counting

Great game, have a beefy system.
When I first got the game I was still using my older computer with a Core 2 Duo and a Geforce 8600GT. It didn't really run that well but I knew I'd be building soon. My new system has a Core i5 750 and a Geforce GTS260 and it runs really smooth. The game itself is a ton of fun, but you need to not let your kids play it. There's all kinds of crime, which is great if you know right from wrong and fiction from reality. Niko is an interesting character, and the characters that he meets up with have distinct personalities. It does kind of turn into The Sims with your friends calling you every 20 minutes, but the minigames are varied and the conversations they have are pretty funny or interesting, depending on who it is. Or if it's Little Jacob, completely unintelligible. :p The graphics are great and they have a long way to scale - the faster your computer, the more details there are. The gripe I have is that if I want to custom-tune them that's fine but the next time I start the game the auto settings are back. That's OK, I guess, but I can get a bit more "pretty" out of my computer without giving up the framerate and I'd like it to stay that way.

Better Than Consoles
though many have reviewed this product bad, but as long as you have bought the game and awaited for pathes the latest patches fix everything, the graphics are wayy better than console on pc, just get the 4890 and you are set to go, runs beautifully, and modified entire game to be alot differant all my friends say that they rather play this on my pc then 360 bc it looks better and runs better and handles better with all latest patches, though i must agree the game is terrible without updating, please update game when the game is finished installing, best of all the online gaming is free as usual with most pc games, the slow motion modding effect is awesome with jumping in cars as a passenger and having to be able to have your own gang in the single player and choose their own weapons is great add-on for pc modding. game worth buying for pc for me, the serial is legal, although, alot of peeps hated it on pc at first simply bc it was un-crackable at first and gave off tons of problems when trying to run without disc, but if you bought the game you supported the pc community, they made this great on pc.

Fun But It's a Pain
Let me start by saying this game is buggy and definitely the worst outing from what I would have called a solid development house. The biggest problem, even after patching, and this game is a year old, is that there are several graphic bugs. The biggest is the graphics fade. For instance occasionally I'll be driving down the road and the road will turn into what looks like grey mud with fog on top and then flip back eventually and repeat. Smaller issues continue to pop up as well, like all of the sudden the on/off freeway ramps will appear to be blocked by a long grey slab which, thankfully, I can still drive through. I've had the same problems on two computers using different graphic cards, both nVidia, a 260 GTX and an 8800 GT. The many graphic issues with this game have been well documented so I'll let the rest go. Installation and running this game is a ridiculous continual slap in the face. Not only do you need to deal with Windows Live, a first for me and not at all enjoyable or useful in my opinion (it feels like they took Steam, ripped it's guts out and tried to put it in a pretty box that they're gonna make you open). Second, Rockstar Social Club is a necessary installation and not only will it attempt to make itself launch when your computer starts but it must be running when you launch the game and will reinstall the auto launcher each time you run the game. This makes for a fun mini-game after I'm done playing of cleaning up after it so it won't auto launch itself the next day. As for the game itself, so far I am finding it enjoyable even with the problems. It's not groundbreaking, there are several uneven spots, such as the Snow Storm mission that suddenly really amps up the difficulty and pretty much keeps it there, but this is small and you'll adjust, just expect to replay this mission a few times. If you're like me you'll enjoy the random chaos you can create in any GTA game and pretty much that's why I bought it, then you won't be too disappointed. I would have preferred to get it as a digital download but for some reason Rockstar is keeping the prices on these at any retailer at the original asking price, $50. I wouldn't pay that for this game then, because of the many bugs, and definitely wouldn't now so Amazon is your best shot at this point. I have to say before I played this game, even after San Andres which I didn't like, I had a much higher opinion of Rockstar. With the way they handled and continue to handle, the lack of patches to fix these old problems says a lot, I wouldn't trust them any further than any other house that would make it's customers jump through this many hoops for what is still, a year later, an unfinished game.

more fun on the PC
this game is great. i loved it on the 360 and i wanted to get back into the modding community that i enjoyed with GTA: Vice City and GTA: San Andres. my only complaints are the amount of BS i had to go through just to get to play the game. i was seriously about ready to just throw it away, not cause the game is bad, but cause of the Rockstar Lounge crap and Microsoft's PC version of XBL. it was literary an hour of crap and failed updates and errors just to get to play the game, only to find out i couldnt save till i did everything both Microsoft and Rockstar wanted(linking or creating an Live account). when i finally got past all of that, i got an update that specifically removed all that BS, and made it easy to play the game without 20 minutes of crap and sign in stuff. other than that, if you want to do any kind of modding, you need to get a file or 2 and then your ready to go. 5 stars for a great, with a serious hindrance you only have to deal with once
