Overall, a very good study guide. Thorough, well written and clear.

helpful but contains a few inaccurate statements (such as claiming Osama Bin Laden was killed in 2001). the answer key for the practice tests are out of order but the information is still helpful. good as one resource in studying for the MTEL but definitely won't be enough to prepare you to pass on it's own,

This is useful for brushing up on social studies before the exam. I hold an MA in history, but it had been years since I really studied ancient history, and this book helped me remember what I had not studied or read about since high school. If you specialize in another area of social studies such as economics or sociology, you might want to pick up a Western Civ history book and a U.S. History book. The written text itself is succinct and clear. I would read individual sections and take the the short succeeding practice exams. Another flaw is the short practice exams that follow each chapter of the book, include the answers, so if you want to see how much knowledge you have, you need to cover up the answers. The text includes a couple of factual errors as well. The free Flashcards are useless, and seem to be more generic terms than anything designed for the MTEL. The tests are a useful study tool. Massachusetts provides one practice exam on their website, this book provides two more. Most importantly, I passed the exam with my first attempt!

Just starting to study for the MTEL

I bought this book because it was the highest rated on Amazon. Those reviews must have been written by the family and friends of the publisher. This book is riddled in inaccuracies. The sample tests in the back have incorrect answer keys, so you need to figure out how to score your tests. In one section, it states that Bin Laden was captured and killed in 2001. Wrong. In another section, a map key indicates that the Slave states during the Civil War were in the West part of the country, not the south, which they have indicated as unsettled territory. I recommend buying ANY other History study guide, but trusting this one is a quick way to guarantee you don't pass.

I liked all the areas of history it covered: US History, World History, Geography, Government and Economics. Lots of practice questions with the correct and incorrect answers and WHY they are the right or wrong answers. A LOT of information packed into one study guide! But well worth the information! I will be getting the flash cards now to supplement the study guide. The also offer a free DVD for the MTEL essential test tips at the beginning of the book. Well worth the money to pass the test!

Not a bad study guide. Its useful, but the actual mtel practice exam is harder than this. Offers a good amount of review info. I suggest getting a good western civ. book As well.

Not gonna lie, I got this to brush up on my history since my 7 year old is always asking questions. I figured why not since we both want/need to learn more why not get it from a creditable source and not just Wikipedia. So when he has a question (or 30 as the usual case) we can refer to this and learn more. We both are enjoying this and how much we are learning. This is very thorough and easy to understand. I do like that there is practice test so when we finish the book we can take a test on it to make sure we understand everything. With an incentive like Chuck E. Cheese and $20 worth of tokens there if he scores a B or higher its making him want to learn and retain it. This is a really quality book and I'm glad its easy to understand since I haven't been to school in many years. This book has also inspired me to learn more and read more than just cookbooks or romance novels.
