Bread and butter is something we serve at many of our meals. My family loves homemade bread, so it is one of the highlights of dinner. The butter for it, however, always ended up on a saucer or salad plate that wasn't quite as pretty or special as the bread or even the rest of the meal. So when I saw that my favorite ceramic kitchenware line had produced a mini loaf pan that can double as a butter dish, I knew that I had to have it. Like the other pieces in this collection, it is beautifully adorned with hand painted lavender flowers - a single flower on one side, four on the other. The edges of the dish are decoratively scalloped and the dish is just deep enough for a single stick of butter. The underside of the dish is marked with the Arousing Appetites branding and is unglazed. Ceramic kitchenware needs special care and this dish is no different. You do not want to expose it to temperature extremes very quickly. If you remove it from the oven, don't put it right in the refrigerator or it may cause it to crack. You can refrigerate in the dish, just make sure it has cooled down to close to room temperature first. You also never want to expose this to direct heat, like a flame or stovetop burner as that may also damage the dish. Because the bottom of the dish is unglazed, you want to be sure you have something under it, so the rough texture doesn't scratch your furniture. To wash your pottery do not soak it in water (pottery is made from clay after all!), but hand wash and dry your dish. I prefer not to place mine in the dishwasher due to the amount and length of time it is exposed to water and also because if things shift while being washed it could break the dish. The manufacturer does tell you, however, that this dish is dishwasher, microwave and oven safe. All the extra effort is worth it. This dish is impressive and beautiful and you will receive tons of compliments each time you use it. Sometimes the smallest touches, like this dish, help make your dinners more than just dinner, but an event where everything looks as good as it tastes.
