almost what i was looking for
I have Changes I and II from the 80s on vinyl (and a bunch of other Bowie as well). I didn't realize the LPs were so valuable these days. I'm pretty clueless and no audiophile by any means and thought I could just find those albums on CD, silly me. I really wish this one had "Starman" and "Oh! You Pretty Things" since I love those two on Changes II and I'm not about to get Hunky Dory(?) just for "Oh! You Pretty Things." And around the time of "Let's Dance" on this album I sort of lose interest. I do appreciate having "Under Pressure" on here for a litte Queen fix, though. Part of what I like about listening to music is the album experience. Albums bring back memories, knowing exactly which tune is going to come next, where I was when I was most into the album, friends I listened to it with, who I taped the album for or from. So it will take some getting used to listening to this one, tracks in different order from my familiar old Changes, and different versions. "All the Young Dudes," for example, sounds different than what I'm used to I guess. I just wanted some of my fave tunes for long road trips in any case. I finally got a car with a CD player -- welcome to the 90s, eh? -- and I'm too lazy to download MP3s and really like the whole album format anyway with cover art, etc. when I'm listening at home. I really only listen to music at home on the old-school stereo or in my car, no need for a portable device. (I've actually been driving around until recently with a tape deck in my '93 Impreza. Most of my favorite music is on cassette, taped from albums I bought in the 80s or from friends' albums that I was too cheap to buy then :) I can't comment on quality here because in the car I don't really care, and remembering what I used to pay for vinyl 30 years ago, used CDs are pretty cheap! Now if I could only find the exact same albums I love in identical CD versions...

One of pop music's great innovators gets his due
Icon. Strange. Innovative. Glam Rocker. Chameleon. Gender Bender. Eclectic Artist. Yes, the great David Bowie has certainly been a moving target in the music world. Sometimes, his looks got more attention than his songs did. But Mr. Bowie always had the talent. He pretty much revolutionized the industry and made us look at the world around us in different ways...sometimes through kaleidoscopic glasses with songs like the still mind-blowing "Space Oddity" & "Ziggy Stardust". The hits are all here: "Changes" (my personal favorite), "Young Americans", "Fame", and "Under Pressure" (Bowie's astounding collaboration with Queen). Then came probably his greatest commercial success as he took the 80's music video/dance song world by storm with "Let's Dance", creating yet another persona. Bowie's teaming with the charismatic Mick Jagger on their cover of "Dancing in the Streets" is a fun 80's listen, if not representing his best work. The most obscure ones like "The Jean Genie" and "Ashes to Ashes" are interesting bonuses to the compilation. If you're a die-hard Bowie fan, you might be yearning a more extensive song collection. But for those who have listened to his songs over the years, this is a pretty good collection on The Thin White Duke!
