Help kids with their math skills plus their reading skills with the engaging and fun MathStart series! Review: Great Tally Mark Practice! - Love these math start books! This is our 3rd one and it is so helpful in reinforcing the tally mark math concept. It covers tally marks 1-10 in a fun read about the O'Malley family on their vacation. I highly recommend math start books if your child is struggling with a concept that they cover in their books. Review: Great Math Book! - We bought this book for a few of our interns that were in our school this year. I think it is a great book that can be used for lower elementary school to either introduce or revisit tallying data. We used this book to integrate our science and math units together as we were collecting real weather data in 3rd grade. Stuart J. Murphy is a great author that writes relevant books that can easily be used in the classroom no matter what the unit is! I have been aware of his books since going through my teacher schooling. They came highly recommended by a professor who had been a teacher for many years. I enjoy how timeless his books are!

Perfect to introduce data collection
I use this book as an interactive read aloud to introduce data collection and tally charts to my first grade class. The road trip storyline and idea of playing car games is relatable for many students to make connections to. Like many of the titles in this series, there is enough of a substantial story to engage students while providing several examples of collecting data and using tallies. After reading, try using toy cars for students to find and tally by color.

Provides a fun idea for kids on car vacations, works!
Don't miss this book - if you ever take a car vacation with your kids! The three kids in this family have three opportunities to play "who can find the most _____ in the color ______ " along the day-long drive toward the vacation destination. The parents distribute pencils and paper, each child chooses a color, the parents decide how long the game will take, and the game begins. Two games are played within the car, one game is played while standing in line at the hamburger stand for lunch. Our 3-1/2 year old daughter has been happy to read this with me several times over the last 6 months. We have tried tallying on a car trip with her, and it worked well. She isn't coordinated enough yet to write up the tally numbers (llll, then a diagonal), but when she gets older, she will understand this. Meanwhile, it is a great story!

Smashing wee story to aid maths knowledge and understanding.
I used this to help teach tally marks to primary 1's. They engaged well with the story which is colourful and makes sense. The story allows for you, as the teacher, to stop and encourage the pupils to join in the tally mark games which makes this interactive. I would say it is more suited for early years up to P3.
