Who am I? I've forgotten the answer to that question long ago. Ever since I ran from that house, so desperate to escape, I left with only the clothes on my back and socks on my feet. After that day, I've only ever walked in stolen shoes. Could I be a girl who is searching for the meaning of life in faceless men? They were all so forgettable. Until he came along. He took me under a waterfall and made me forget my name, and in return, I took his instead. Enzo Vitale. An enigmatic man that will only ever love the deep sea. Or rather the predators that inhabit it. Turns out, he's not so different than the monsters he feeds. He lured me onto his boat like a fish in the ocean, seeking vengeance for my crime. Had I realized his intentions, and that a massive storm would leave us shipwrecked, I would've run. Now, I'm a girl who's seeking refuge in a decrepit lighthouse with a man who loathes me almost as much as he craves me. He wants to hurt me, but the old caretaker of the abandoned island may have intentions far more sinister. It's no longer a question of who I am, but rather, will I survive? This one follows Sawyer, a woman who has been broken time and time again. When she took life into her own hands, she did what she had to do to survive, which was stealing identities. One day, after fleeing to Australia, she meets Enzo, a hot Italian man who happens to be a SHARK expert!!! They hit it off and start off with a BANG *if you know what I mean*. They get stuck on a creepy island/lighthouse with a weird old man, and with one bed while his hatred is still there, so are new feelings. This is a rollercoaster of emotions. Let’s just get this out of the way: Enzo, my man, a literal grump, but yet I was rooting for him the WHOLE time. Like, I hated him, loved him, hated that I loved him, and wanted him all at once. But SAWYER... my goodness, this was her book. She is fierce, yet scared. She is hilarious but knows when to be serious. She is everything I have ever wanted in a FMC. Just loved her. As for the story, HD did not disappoint me. She always gives us uniqueness that you can’t find everywhere else. This story is suspenseful, creepy, sexy AF. I found myself scared and turned on all at once. WHAT A THRILL! This book will NOT be for everyone. It is dark, bully, enemies-to-lovers, psychological thriller, with lots of TWs. feed me to the sharks I am done 🦈
First let me just say I only just finished this book, this review will no doubt be longer than their sins put together and Enzo’s 🍆 so read at your own risk of finding my excited babble. So believe it or not this is my first book by this author and yes I know have I been under a rock (please don’t throw stones at me) I have seen the duet but haven’t got to it yet, will I run to Amazon to get it now DAMN RIGHT! I am not sorry at all to admit my twisted, dark mind and soul totally loved this book. Please read trigger warnings and if you aren’t a lover of dark romance I would recommend giving this one a miss, if your soul is as dark as mine jump on in! This book has so many tropes that I would feel I cheated you if I didn’t lay them all out for you, so here we go - one bed - Breath play - Forced proximity - Enemies to lovers - Degradation + Praise kink A dark, thriller romance - that spoke directly into my soul!! Our two leads are Sawyer and Enzo, my unholy hell are they explosively toxic together! A match made in hell, all I could do was hold on tight and enjoy the ride. They meet at a bar, have a night that neither of them will be able to forget and when morning comes *poof* that’s all folks or is it?! Sawyer she is devastatingly broken, lost, alone and undoubtedly sad. She is desperately running from a past that follows her wherever she goes. She can no longer stand the sight she sees looking back at her in the mirror. My heart bled for her, my soul darkened with hers and my head was screaming at her so many times. She runs and she runs, unfortunately for her (luckily for us) it’s right into a walking nightmare that goes by the name Enzo. Will her lies finally catch up with her? Is there anyone she can trust? Or will she keep on drowning in her sorrow? Enzo 😮💨😮💨 can you say walking, talking predator with teeth as sharp as his words?! He is a business owner and shark expert. (Baby shake get the FRICK out the way, there is a new daddy in town!) He doesn’t have the best past either, he doesn’t trust easily and definitely doesn’t open up - so much so he hasn’t found anyone he deems worthy enough to have kissed on the lips (pretty woman vibes NOT a chance in hell😆) I literally wanted to gut him like a fish SO many times, but I also wanted to jump his bones and breath his air into me. Will he be able to forgive her? If he does can he keep her safe from not only others but himself? The steamy steaminess in this book is *chefs kiss*, weak at the knees dirty and the places my goodness can someone get me a fan! 😮💨🥵🔥 There was a few things within the book that I guessed early on and was literal screaming at them to see what I was seeing, hear me shout and run like your ars€ is on fire please!! There are lies, thrilling moments, hot AF steaminess, emotional moments and let’s not forget the 3rd lead the sharks 🦈😆 Okay I am going to stop now, as you can see I clearly feel into an Ocean sized pit of love and I don’t think there is any coming back from it.

HD Carlton never disappoints.
As always Carlton showing that she is an incredible writer. Another suspenseful and exciting story. I couldn't feel the 'dark romance' side, if I compare with other books that I had read from this author. For me, it is more an standard romance with spicy scenes.

While stranded on an island after being caught in a storm, the man giving them shelter seems odd and things don't stack up. I loved this element of the story. It made it so much more than just a dark romance. I personally love thrillers, they really grip me and get my mind churning with theories so I loved that part of the plot. Check trigger warnings before reading this. While I loved it, this style is not for everyone, so do your research first.....

Loved it
I'm not able to write reviews anymore because "I use too many profanities and vulgar language" and they always get blocked 🙄 All I will say then which is clean , as always H.D.Carlton is living up to her well known reputation of devastatingly alluring books with moral grey characters I could not and would not put this down.. Definitely worth the read... now to hopelessly and ever so impatiently wait for the next one she releases... I'll be here in the shadows waiting for the light ❤️ 🌶🌶🌶

Enzo was flawed and cruel but not unredeemable. I mean at times I hated, loved him and then hated him again. Sawyer was just so fierce despite being dealt with some bad cards. She was full of wit and was absolutely hilarious. I loved the dynamics between them and seeing how they unfold. The chemistry between Enzo and Sawyer was also just off the charts!! And the spice? I mean holding her head down in shark infested waters during spicy time? ENZO, OH MY🥵 This is a such fantastic read, it is well written, well paced so unique.— everything about it I JUST LOVED!! The suspense and mystery throughout just keeps you on your toes. This read is a highly recommended read💙 ⚠️Please check for triggers before proceeding to read⚠️

Sawyer doesn’t even know who she is anymore she’s been running that long. Sometimes you run into the right people and sometimes people who are meant to push you on a certain path. Right or wrong.. Enzo was not only blocking Sawyers path but destroying it so she couldn’t run anymore. 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕’𝒔 𝒍𝒖𝒓𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒃𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒇𝒂𝒄𝒆? 𝑾𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒊𝒕 𝒔𝒘𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒐𝒘 𝒎𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒆 𝒐𝒓 𝒆𝒂𝒕 𝒎𝒆 𝒔𝒍𝒐𝒘𝒍𝒚? I’m going through a lot of emotions and feelings about this whole book. The plot, story, suspense and thrill is spot on. I don’t want to say too much because this is not going be a review of spoilers. There is a lot that happens and goes on that every reader should read and experience themselves and how they feel. Ultimately Sawyers and Enzos journey is a hate filled lustful one. They cross lines yet experience something that would only tear you apart or mould you together. 𝑻𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝒎𝒆 𝒂 𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒕𝒉. 𝑻𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝒎𝒆 𝒂 𝒍𝒊𝒆. Sometimes that hate line was confusing to the point I was questioning their feelings but to be honest I don’t even think they knew half the time because of their individual experiences. I think they found their other half in a way that works for them. 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒗𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒅𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒉 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒑𝒂𝒊𝒏? Also need to add this.. the fact Enzo is Italian.. You all know how excited I was for this book, for months 😅 And H.D. is an author I can always count on to deliver. She said many times this book is different than Cat and Mouse duet and it's true. I would say it is less dark and twisted, but still messed up (how we love it) with incredible atmosphere and even more spice. If duet was too dark for you, try this one! Does It Hurt? is like a suspensful thriller movie taking place on the pages of the book instead of tv screen. Prologue caught my interest and I was immediately engrossed in the story because H.D. has amazing ability of world building. She is weaving intriguing dark tale full of suspense, ghosts, mysteries, with creepy old man living on isolated island and shipwrecked couple who hate each other - but Sawyer and Enzo also feel undeniable attraction. And when they are together, it is explosive. She is running from her past, keeping low profile and trying to survive - even if it hurts someone else. He is a shark expert and f*lthy mouthed Italian, trapped with her on the island that hides too many secrets and dangers. Whole story gets darker as it goes and mysteries are slowly unfolded in the breathtaking end of this story. I fully enjoyed this book because it surprised me in many ways, it was sensual, thrilling and kept me on my toes from beginning to end. If you are looking for dark romance, with unique eerie atmosphere, this is a book for you 🖤

A Must-Read for Fans of Dark Romance!
*spoiler-free review* 5/5 ⭐️ overall rating 4/5 🌶️ smut Tropes/Elements: ∆ dark romance ∆ revenge ∆ forced proximity ∆ enemies to lovers ∆ MMC with an accent ∆ dual POV ∆ touch her and die ∆ one bed ∆ creepy, eerie, suspenseful I read this book before I was really active on Goodreads, and it still lives rent free in my head, so I might as well give it the review it deserves – I am 28 years old and recently got back into reading. Does It Hurt is the 7th book I have read since starting this journey. This was also my FIRST dark romance. And let me tell you, I was pulled into the depths of these waters with Enzo and Sawyer immediately! I absolutely devoured this book. This was the perfect mix of darkness – I loved the grumpy MMC with his sexy Italian accent. I had to look up many of the translations, but I absolutely loved it. The quotes and translations made the MMC’s words hold so much more passion and depth. “Bella Ladra” *swoons* This was also a dark story in terms of, suspense and fear as well… and I absolutely did not see this coming since I went into this without really reading up on the book first, (with that in mind - please check TW's), but as I mentioned, this is a spoiler-free review. So we’ll leave it at that. But the best part of this book was that it isn’t like some of the other dark romance I have read since, which feature pathetic FMC’s with no character development or personality. The FMC is a quirky, independent character. We get to hear her story, we get to see more than one side of her, and we get to watch her take action and develop throughout the book: “But I realize now that I was wrong. Being scared and weak aren’t synonymous. It takes strength to keep getting back up after constantly being knocked down.” This book gave me everything I needed it to. All in all, I am new to H. D. Carlton, but I won’t be for long. I think this was extremely well done and I cannot wait to read more of her work!
