Electrical Short
This works Perfect. My wife's Escalade kept blowing the fuse for the rear back up camera. The dealership couldn't tell me for sure how much it would cost to fix as it was an hourly rate and searching out the electrical problem could take 1 hour upto 8 hours. I bought this and anxious to try it out, I went to the main harness and began to go forward. After passing another harness that fed off of the main line the needle started pointing the other way so, I knew I had passed the short. Went back to the other wiring harness and it just kept leading me directly to the short. I couldn't immediately see the short as it was on the bottom side of a wire resting on the alternator. Once I picked the wire up and saw the wear, I taped it, replaced the fuse and it worked. No other problems. This $32 tool and 5 minutes saved me money and the biggest thing... It saved the inconvenience of leaving my wife's car in the shop until it could be fixed. Highly Recommend this Gadget.

Built for years of use in your tool box. Without the need for batteries!
Built solid, and unlike many products it will actually fit back into the included case after its 1st use! Our local Snap-on dealer carries this model and the slightly more expensive 25300 model. A good indication of its build quality and dependable performance. Unfortunately for me it would not detect my electrical problem, which may be in the PCM (control module) of the truck and is not a complete dead short (about 5 amps) and thus does not generate the heat required to activate relay in the tool and more importantly generate the magnetism in the circuit to allow detection by the meter. Regardless I am keeping it! As always with amazon delivered quickly.

Helped me a lot, but not in the way intended
This little tool helped me a lot to find my electrical problem, but not in the way intended. My tail light fuse kept blowing out every time I put one in. I tore up my dash and trunk trying to find the problem, and couldn't. I bought this tool. The tool works in place of a fuse, and allows current to flow for a few seconds before shutting off. It resets after several seconds, and current flows again. This feature allowed me to determine that my tail lights did not have a short, because the lights came on when the current flowed. The problem was a defective bulb in my parking light in the front of the car. So, the tool didn't find a short, but it allowed me to run current and see the problem was not a short to my tail lights. The short finder gauge is confusing, and the instructions on the gauge are contradicted by the written instructions. There is nothing in the instructions that explains that the current is not always flowing -- we heard some clicking, but only realized the thing was tripping when the tail lights would come on and then go off. The gauge can only work while current is flowing, so it would be nice if the instructions made this clear. Also, to use in place of a mini fuse, you have to break an old fuse to get the metal tabs out, clip the tool's leads onto them, and then insert them in the fuse box. Clumsy. Surely they could come up with a simple adapter that would make this easier. Still, I would not have solved my problem without this tool.

It helped me find my short, but not the way it's supposed to.
Take your victories where you can :) Been looking for a short in the parking lamps on my 2004 Lincoln Town Car for like 6 weeks, probably spent 50 hours on it and replaced all kinds of parts, disconnected everything I could, etc. Anyway, this little sucker works by pulsing some current through the fuse slot that was blown. Hooked it up and started to look around, since I could disconnect everything except for the wiring to the headlights I started there. Looking at the connector to the headlights I swore I saw a little flicker of light, stared at it for a while and there it was again. Turns out the connectors in the connector were a little messed up and were intermittently touching each other, so it wasn't the gauge with the short finder that found it, but the capacitor sent the current and I visibly saw the hot spot where they were connecting. Problem solved, so it helped, just not how it was originally intended. Success story anyway.

Find that shorted wire!
I saw this tool on a You Tube video and how it is used...bought one for myself. First time I used it, I found a shorted wire bundle where a careless body shop mechanic cut into the bundle when replacing the floor board in my 56' Chevy. With all new wiring...a short was not what I expected. This tool found it without any problem! Liked it so much...bought. one for my brother who was chasing a short the old way...to no success. He got nailed with a 510.00 repair bill before he received his testor! He has since used it and loves it too. Great tool, great price, fast delivery.

good unit if youre confused...better go to school
bought it to find a parasitical electrical floating short. a short usually pops a fuse... no fuse popped. turned out to be a bad altenator and a weak battery. but ..hey i can say i have one in my tool box...works quite well with detecting OPEN circuits. But limited to where you can hold it over a harness . and if the harness goes too deep in a hard reach place.. no go homer.. sorry.

Found deeply hidden short.....
This short tester saved the day and a few hundred dollars in service on my Ford truck. I had a very difficult time finding a short on my truck. I used a fuse socket adapter, which makes it easier to attache the circuit breaker included with the tester to the fuse box. The circuit breaker takes the place of the fuse for testing, I tracked down the the hidden short within a half hour by moving the ammeter over the wires associated with that fuse. The meter fluctuates left to right, and centers over the suspected short. Turns out that I had a loose wiring loom rubbing against a brake line. Over time the brake line wore through the loom and into a wire associated with the speed sensor. The intermittent shorting of this wire caused my speedometer to stop operating and my transmission to stop shifting. A few repair shops told me that my transmission was bad, this was not the case, after the short was fixed I had no further transmission/speedometer issues.

A must-have tool for all mechanics.
This is an inexpensive but effective tool for testing and tracing automotive electrical shorts. Without this tester, you could be replacing the fuses on your vehicle all day long. You put this short tester in place of the fuse of the suspected short circuit and it will trip the tester causing it to reset itself in a few seconds. Each time it re-sets itself, you can use the Amp meter to trace the direction of the short wire. Great little tool to have in your tool box.

'what red wire?'
bought this a while ago now and as it happens found the fault in the wiring (ignition switch) before this arrived but I know this tool would have saved me so much time (on it for two days, probing!!) I can't wait to use it properly but problems like I had don't happen every week thankfully but at least I have the means to diagnose now. Many thanks...Ken

The review of this product and the Youtube video that led me to purchase this product.
This is a great product and easy to use when trying to find a wire which is grounding out in a wiring harness with a great many wires in it. The meter shows you the direction of the wire that is grounding out. I wish I would have discovered this product years ago and while working in my electrical field. It would have saved me a great deal of time and frustration when trying to track down a grounding wire.
