FiiO K7 Desktop DAC and Amplifier

I got this to drive my headphones off my desktop instead of running them straight out of my computer. I have been using it for about a month now. Setup was simple, I plugged it in over USB and it was working right away without any drivers to chase down. The sound quality is a big step up from what I was getting before, with more detail coming through and a wider sense of space in the music. It has plenty of power on tap and I have never needed to push the volume anywhere near its limit. The knob has a smooth weighted feel to it and the unit is heavy enough that it stays put when I turn it. It runs a little warm after a few hours but nothing concerning. This has been a worthwhile upgrade to my desk setup.

I bought this to adequately power my Semnheiser HD6xx. My laptop was doing a good job of getting them to a high volume, but I noticed a bit of mud in the bass especially and it felt compressed overall. Pros 1. Powerful enough to power them with high gain and single ended. Granted, I gotta turn it to about 3pm on the dial to do it but my source (laptop) isn't entirely maxed out so that's on me. 2. Doesn't get too warm. I listened to them for an entire work day, with about a 30 minute break for lunch, and it was warm to the touch, but not concerningly so in the slightest. 3. Worked easy for me. Downloaded and installed the FiiO driver, plugged in the USB cable, and it immediately worked. 4. I personally prefer AKM DACs like this to ESS DACs. ESS are more accurate, but AKMs do it pretty smooth and that pairs well with the Sennheiser HD6xx. I am satisfied with how everything sounds. 5. Came with everything I needed in the box, including a 3.5mm-to-quarter inch adapter. No extra purchases needed. 6. Titanium is a nice color, and works well with the light around the volume knob. Looks nice on the desk. 7. I see what folks mean about the delay when using the volume knob, but my adjustments are usually slight and the lag doesn't bother me. The dial feels good to turn. 8. Snagged it used for $200 after tax. Neutral 1. As is the nature of these things, the improvement is different from song to song depending on the song, how it's mastered, and how dense it is musically. I got the biggest improvements from dense stuff like classical and metal, but far fewer improvements from simpler songs with fewer instruments. So, whether or not it's worth a $200 purchase depends heavily on what you listen to, and what volume, and what you were using previously to power your headphones, AND the impedance/sensitivity of those headphones or earbuds. 2. It's making me want a balanced cable to take full advantage of those THX amps. Cons 1. Since the noticeable improvement is only about 5-15% on average depending on the song, there is a performance vs value question that I'm not sure how to answer. It DOES work, at least for these high impedance Sennheisers, and there is a tangible difference you can hear with proper A/B testing. So, these get 5 stars for doing what they say they're gonna do. However, good amp/DACs like this are transparent so my headphone sounds the same just with less clipping, better bass control, and more instrument separation, but whether or not that's worth $200, is tough to answer. Overall, I'm just grateful that this isn't audiophile snake oil, which is exceedingly common in this space unfortunately. My headphones sound cleaner (at higher volumes too), with superior dynamic range, and like the drivers are finally getting enough power. The AKM DAC is smooth and inoffensive, and the fact that I can get even more power with a balanced cable is a nice "someday upgrade." Is the sound quality $200 better? Hard to say, but definitely greater than $0 better, so in all, yay!

TL;DR: For $200 in 2023, You cannot get a better-sounding, more well-rounded amp/DAC combo unit. And thus, you could not pick a better "budget" amplifier for your first foray into audiophilia. Also, if it's your first headphone amp - welcome to the rabbit hole. Follow me down. The Fiio K7 is insanely flexible. It has balanced (4.4mm) and unbalanced (6.3mm) outputs and 4 input options (RCA, coaxial, optical, USB). It has 2 gain settings to assist with powering harder-to-drive headphones. It can even function as a pre-amp/DAC for another amp like a tube. Does it sound as expansive as the sound coming out of my $2400 Sennheiser HDV 820, on my HD800S headphones? No. But it's about 85-90% of the way there... and that's incredible value. The sound signature is clean and neutral as you'd expect from a THX AAA 788-based amp. No coloration that I could discern. Power is reasonable, and with the gain options, most headphones shouldn't have an issue. To get my HD800S as loud as I wanted (which is pretty loud) on the balanced output, I did need to use high gain (maxed out on the low gain just below my threshold), but I couldn't hear any distortion from it. Some high-end planars might top out close to the max power... but if you're rocking those, bump up your amp game at that point just a tad... ha. I can't quite knock a star for the stupid volume knob stepping - but I was tempted! Volume adjustment is not smooth/linear, but instead adjusts up and down in small steps as you roll the knob. Think of it like adjusting volume on a typical TV or other device. It's in steps - and overly-big ones it feels like, at times. Not a massive dealbreaker, but every once in a while I find myself wishing I could have an in-between step in sound volume. I've never had a knob-based amplifier cut this corner before, and it's maddening... but livable. Rant over. The FiiO K7 punches above its weight, and trades blows with combo units in the $400-500 range in various categories. The bar has been raised, and for the price, this is an excellent value.

Provides enough juice to my nice headphones which are 80ohm. Sometimes upon returning from sleep, the drivers will hiccup and take a moment to come back up. Occasionally have to turn it off and back on again to get it to show. Otherwise, it sounds great and is loud. I like the physical switches. Set it and forget it for me.

I love this little thing. I bought it for the office, just needed something small, cheap, sounds good, and works well for the office and this ticks all the boxes. I love that you can save money by not getting BT which for my use case is unnecessary. I like the smooth knob, LED around it, build quality, and most importantly the sound and power it produces. I use it with my Focal Elegia at the office and things sound clear, dynamic, fun, and detailed in a way that I think most people would be impressed with. For a compact, all-in-one, starter amp/dac combo I don't think there is anything better. Honestly I don't think most people would ever need anything more than this unless you need certain ports or power this may not be able to provide. At home I have both a SMSL SU-10 hooked up to a Aune S17Pro, and previously came form a Schiit Asgard/Modius stack. Before that I came from a JDS Labs amp/dac combo unit. The headphones I have include Meze Empyreans, HE1000V2, ZMF Auters, HD660s, and Focal Elegia headphones. Is it possible to get better or a different sound signature than this with spending more? Probably, but not by much and that that point you are really just searching for that specific sound signature or to get those last couple % to reach perfection. This thing is great and would highly recommend to anyone looking to get into dedicated amp dacs.

Any of these are going to greatly improve the sound over plugging your headphones directly into the mini-jack on a computer. Listening was done with a few different headphones but mostly with beyerdynamic DT 700 PRO X Closed-Back Studio Headphones. Music source was a laptop connected to the DAC/Headphone Amp via USB. If an external power supply was included, I used that. If not, power came via USB. I've kept notes on my impressions brief and included comparisons amongst the DAC/Amp's in this list. They are listed below in my order of preference with my favorites at the top. If you want flowery vocabulary I'm sure in depth reviews are available out there on the web. Headphones make the greatest difference in sound - spend more on them, if necessary. The DAC/Amp is secondary but does add its own flavor to the music. --- iFi Zen DAC V2 | Desktop Digital Analog Converter (Listening only with "TRUEBASS" off.) Very good. Slightly better than the FiiO K7. Better vocal clarity and slightly fuller bass. I ended up comparing this with the FX-Audio DAC-X6 head to head, which continued to surprise me as I put it up against significantly more expensive competitors. Across several hours and many pieces of music, I prefer the iFi... but the difference is infinitesimal. Possibly the iFi has a little more punch to the bass? Maybe a bit more space ans separation? If you're working to a budget, get the FX-Audio and put the extra cash towards better headphones. FX-Audio DAC-X6 Mini HiFi 2.0 Digital Audio Decoder DAC This thing is good. Surprisingly good. I ended up putting it head-to-head with amps costing three times its price. Slightly warmer sound, with slightly less detail in the vocals than the iFi Zen Air, but more space in the music, and more enjoyable to listen to. Slightly better clarity than the Topping. FiiO K7 Full Balanced HiFi DAC Headphone Amplifier This is indeed better than the K5 version. Vocals are more lifelike. And a particular emphasis on the mid-treble heard in the K5 is absent. There is more separation between the instruments. Very close call with the iFi V2, with my preference going to the iFi for better vocal clarity and slightly fuller bass. iFi Zen Air DAC Not quite as good as the V2, but close. Closer than the FiiO K5 is to the K7. There is, again, a comparative emphasis in mid-treble and the vocals get a bit lost. The sound is slightly thin compared to rivals at this price point. FiiO K5 Pro Headphone Amps Portable Desktop DAC and Amplifier Not quite as good as the K7, but at half the price one cannot really complain. Vocals are not quite as lifelike and there is more mid-treble - but not in a good way. Topping DX1 Mini Stereo DAC Headphone Amplifier Combo Very good little unit. Bass is slightly overemphasized. Fosi Audio K5 Pro Gaming DAC Headphone Amplifier I thought this unit was DOA. Turns out that you must long press the volume knob to turn it on. (Short press to select input.) Not terrible, but not as musical as the others in this test. Also, the only one with bass and treble knobs. And only a mini-jack - no 1/4" jack. Pro-Ject Head Box S2 Digital This DAC/Amp had an issue that makes it unlistenable. The sound is very nice... but... there's some faint static. Only in the music, not in silence. A faint crackling.... Can't have that.

I am not an audio "expert" in any way, and I am an audiophile newcomer, but I must say that after powering my HD 600s with these, there is so much "room" for the music to expand itself, without any distortion or cluttering of the audio. The USB connector is a type B to A which is fine for me, but others may prefer it being a type C. The build quality of this AMP/DAC is amazing, it is built entirely from aluminum with CNC finishing, and everything else like the volume knob, switches and buttons just feel expensive. Nothing feels cheap, and it is a sturdy compact, little unit. The volume knob acts, obviously, as a volume knob but also as an on/off switch. Switching between on and off gives a nice, satisfying click, and when turning the unit on there's a subtle RGB coloring show going on, which switches to a solid color which isn't too bright, depending on your music's sampling rate. Blue: 44.1KHz/48KHz, yellow: 88.2/96/176.4/192/352.8/384KHz, and green: DSD64/128/256. In terms of power, there's really nothing these couldn't power. You have enough power for any headphone you'll plug in, which is great. The gain switch works well, and doesn't cause any distortions when setting it to high. A balanced feature at this price range, from what I've seen, is super RARE, which means you have incredible value for money, making this a future-proof AMP/DAC. You have guards in place to protect your headphones and your ears, as well as unit protection. The volume knob takes a second to adjust, since it has a guard against sudden, accidental high volumes. If you're looking for an AMP/DAC combo, this is the one to go for!

I added this to drive my headphones and it improved the sound quality even further - headphones that already sounded good got noticeably better with a proper amp behind them instead of running off onboard audio. Just as important, it has been completely reliable. It sits on the desk, it works every time I turn it on, and I never think about it. That's exactly what you want from a piece of gear like this.

Daha önce İfi Zen Air Dac kullanıyordum çok kötü diyemem bu DAC için ama Fiio K7 kullanmaya başladıktan sonra kulaklık resmen 2-3 level atladı diyebilirim. Geniş sahne ve enstürman detayları büyük ölçüde arttı. Ayrıca kulak tırmalayan müzikler netleşti ve berraklaştı. Daha zevkle ve keyifle müzik dinliyorum.

Kopfhörerverstärker sind dafür gedacht, schwache Ausgänge für hochohmige Verbraucher zu Verstärken (damit die Spulen auch genug „Kraft“ zum Schwingen haben). Das macht der hier. Produktspecs: Kann sich jeder selber drüber Informieren…und entscheiden, was besser oder schlechter sein soll. Brauchte (und brauche?) bisher keinen Kopfhörerverstärker. Da ein höher ohmiger Hörer im Anflug ist war das aber jetzt vorsorglich mal die Wahl. Aus der Qual. Man, da gibt's ja reichlich Auswahl. (Up's, reimt sich sogar). Lieferumfang: Verstärker, Netzteil, USB Kabel, Adapter von 3,5 auf 6,3mm Klinke. Also alles an Bord. 4,4 symmetrisch ist wohl erst im Kommen und wird bei meinem „Flieger“ dabei sein. Kann ich also noch keine Aussage drüber treffen. Anschluss an den PC via USB (sofort erkannt – Win 11; und gleich noch als Standard implementiert #Edit#1: Als Lautsprecher#). Kopfhörer (Sennheiser HD 599) und auch mein normales Soundsystem (Bose Companion 20) per Adapter auf 6,3 Klinke angeschlossen funktionieren einwandfrei (natürlich nicht gleichzeitig…). Wenn ich also „umschalten“ will brauche ich nur die Stecker am FiiO zu wechseln. Verarbeitung: Top. Ob die kleinen Schalter für „gain“ und „output“ über lange Zeit halten wird sich zeigen. LED um den Lautstärkeregler herum: Gimmick. Könnte stören: Da gibt's wohl über Umwege eine Möglichkeit zum Abschalten per Software. Mit Hinweis: Achtung hier! Achtung da! Mich stört das erstmal nicht. Erste Tests: Boah. Geil. Kopfhörer mit eingeschalteten „gain“ (=Verbesserung): Noch mehr wumms; bis zum Anschlag kaum Nutzbar da einem die Ohren wegfliegen(+6dB) – und das ohne Verzerrungen. Und ein noch größeres Raumklanggefühl - ohne dabei künstlich zu wirken. Ohne gain auch besseres Klangbild. Mit eben mehr wumms. Unterschiede mit verschiedenen Lautstärke Einstellungen kann ich da nicht heraus Hören. Mal der (PC) mal das andere (WinA) oder FiiO macht mehr...Kann da nicht wirklich Unterschiede feststellen. Soundsystem: Verbesserung. Nicht so deutlich wie über Kopfhörer. Und ohne gain. Hört sich für mich hier besser an. Bemängelte Verzögerungen beim schnellen hochdrehen der Lautstärke: Kann ich absolut nicht betätigen. Was aber der Fall ist: Bis Stellung des Lautstärkereglers unter „10.00Uhr“ ist praktisch nichts hörbar (auch wenn PC + Winamp voll aufgedreht sind). Das ist aber kein Mangel, da danach von sehr leise bis Ohrentot alles mit fein Tuning möglich ist – ohne Sprünge/Verzögerung. Härte Test wird der 300 Ohm Kopfhörer werden. Bin da aber guter Zuversicht. Ob sich dann symmetrisch 4,4mm noch besser Anhören wird…? Fazit: Für den Preis: Geiles Teil. Hat sich jetzt schon gelohnt. Und lohnt sich eben auf jeden Fall schon bei einem 50 Ohm Kopfhörer. Edit#1 27.06.24: Der Härte Test: HD 800S 300 Ohm. Via 4,4 mm symmetrische Klinke. Absolut kein Problem. Max 500mW gebraucht - K7 liefert max. 560mW an diesem Ausgang. Hammer. Mit "gain". Und da voll versorgt: Max. Lautstärke bis hin zum Ohren wegfliegen. Ist 4,4 jetzt besser? Hm, gefühlt - ja. Aber sehr subjektiv. Nochmal zur Lautstärke Einstellung im unteren Bereich: Macht Sinn, da ja von etwa 7Uhr aus der Verstärker eingeschaltet wird. Wenn da dann kurz später gleich fast "volle Lotte" rauskommen würde...könnte man sich auch mal vertun. Auch hier: Keinerlei Verzögerung/Sprünge in der Lautstärke Regelung. Keine Ahnung, warum das bemängelt wird. Versch. Baujahre? Weiterhin auch jetzt Kristallklarer Klang ohne Verzerrungen. Empfohlen am PC: Dort 100%. Auch z.B. WA: 100%. Regelung nur über den Verstärker. (Hab' ich so gelesen) - keine Garantie. Mache es aber so. Wie gesagt: Alles subjektiv: Andere Empfinden es vllt. anders. (Persönlich: Der 800S ist nicht zu Bass schwach - bring es nur weitaus natürlicher rüber. Und je nach Aufnahme ist da mehr als genug von zu Hören - mit wumms). Und es gehen über beide Ausgänge die Signale raus (6,3 & 4,4 Klinke). Schön, um Vergleiche zwischen zwei Hörern zu Testen. Zum K7 also End Fazit: Alles Richtig gemacht. Preis/Leistung Top. Kaufempfehlung.

DAC&AMP combo muy interesante. Fácil de usar. Entradas de 6,3 y 4,4mm. Sonido del DAC neutro sin color. Amplificación de sobra para cualquier auricular (excepto para los STAX). Peso liviano. Tamaño bastante reducido. La verdad que si no tienes uno y si tienes auriculares es una buena inversión. El sonido mejora evidentemente entre esto frente a un pc/movil pero mejora aún más si tienes auriculares demandantes como planares o de alta impedancia al tener una salida balanceada de 2000mw a 32 ohmios, lo cuál, a este tamaño, peso y precio es una locura. Lo recomiendo sin duda. A la artesanía y el sabor le puse una estrella.

Amplificador muito bom. Som muito limpo sem ruidos e faz qualquer fone tocar 4x mais alto. Top.

Set up: Pc>Usb Dock>Fiio K7>HifiMan Arya Stealths Where do I start? Though this does add some warmth to my aryas, it balances out the 8k peak to the point where its enjoyable to listen to. Other clearer dac/amps, like the dx3 pro+, only compounded to the issue, making me return them. Not only does it add warmth, its extremely smooth and spaces out the instruments more, alowing it to feel open rather than congested, which was another issue with the dx3. Sounds also echo out as it should rather than being abruptly cut off, adding to the sound stage. Power wise, my Aryas can sound loud, and evening deafening if need be. Iems even more. If you need a nuclear reactor as an amp though, go for something else, and something most definitely more expensive. Its more lifelike/closer to what the music would sound in person like than the clinical presentation of the dx3. Because of this though, some details are drowned out. (Note that my opinions might differ and you might actually like the dx3's sound signature.) The caveats to this dac/amp is that there is no filter options and there some static when it is on high gain and there is nothing playing. Its not audible on sensible volumes, and only slightly audible on ear splitting volume. Another thing is the analog knob. It kinda sucks, as it doesn't follow a linear path, where it steadily goes from 1 to 100. Its actually logarithmic, where 7-10 oclock is barely audible (1-15 vol), 10-12 is medium (15-40 vol), and 12 - 3 is loud (40-90 vol). 3 to 5 is deafening (90-100 vol). Perhaps this is with iems in mind as they require a lot less power, but I find the dx3's infinitely spinning digital knob to be much more fun to play with. Anyways, This thing makes my aryas sound like a beast, where every other dac/amp ive tried gave me a headache. If you're on a budget and looking for something to power your Aryas, or anything similar, go with the K7. Oh yeah. It also comes with a 3.5mm to 6.35mm adapter. Instant 5 stars.
