Lesbian romantic comedy. Flunked law student Maggie (Karyn Dwyer) now works for the highly strung Frances in her Vancouver bookshop, and thinks she has found the love of her life when she meets artist Kim (Christina Cox). All goes well between Maggie and Kim until Maggie's recently divorced mother, Lila (Wendy Crewson) - who is unaware of Maggie's sexuality - announces her intention to come and visit. While Maggie frets over choosing to 'out' herself to her mother, Lila is befriended by her transsexual friend Judy (Peter Outerbridge), and gradually comes to appreciate the truth about her daughter's social group. Review: Sweeter than Chocolate - A much vilified Lesbian movie the cover of which is possibly pinned to the centre of each and every Feminist Lesbian's dart board from here to Northern Ontario and the sweetest, most heart warming thing to come out of Lesbian Cinema in quite some time. Better Than Chocolate tells the story of two Women's blossoming love set against a backdrop of the wider queer community they form a part of and it is the depiction of this community that so angers many Women: Peggy Thomson and Anne Wheeler present an image of an inclusive community in which the old arguments of Sex Positivism and Trans and Bi Inclusion have been resolved and left far behind. This is a community which includes Butch Dykes, Bisexuals, Translesbians and any other group you could hope for in The Great Women's Bar In Heaven. The emotional heart of this movie is the Pre Operative Transexual Judy (a fantastic performance by Peter Outerbridge) to who all the characters turn for advice but who hides their own private pain relating to their relationship with their parents and their love for Frances, the owner of the Lesbian Bookshop which one of the main characters works in. The delicate handling of this romance, in the end, gives more delight than the less interesting romance of the two (slightly boring) Leads and I found myself hoping that Judy and Frances had more screen time. Add to this an open discussion of the use of Toys, Bi Inclusion and a sly dig at the infamous Canadian Anti-Porn Laws of the 1980s and you've got an intelligent, funny and charming film that even manages to be inclusive of Heterosexuals. All in all an utterly joyous affair in all senses of the word. Review: The characters are all pretty loveable, there are a lot of good laughs - I wasn't sure about this film at first, but it really grew on me! The characters are all pretty loveable, there are a lot of good laughs, and a really impressive performance from the actor who plays Judy - hats off for that! Watch out for Judy's stage performance and the wonderfully biting way she sings 'I'm nooooooooot a f****** drag queen!' It is a delight! The whole film is great fun and charmingly romantic. It made me want to be 19 again to do it all again - only better! There are, however, some darker moments which highlight the consistent prejudice which still pervades against trans-gender people, and which fuels some acts of mindless violence and even terrorism. This is handled well in the film - it is grim, as it ought to be, demonstrating the bitter results of ignorance allowed to run unchecked, but while says what it wants to say, it does not over-shadow the general upbeat feel of the story. The soundtrack reminds me of everything that was NOT great about 90's music, but on the other hand, even that got more tolerable with every viewing and I ended up liking some of the songs. I recommend this film. I even wish they'd done a sequel! Enjoy!

Disappointing
After all the hype I'm afraid I thought this was neither funny nor erotic.

Good, a lesbian film with a happy and funny story (it is rare so grab it).
It is funny, and even better as far as i am concerned, it has a happy ending, win, win. Life is crap enough, so most of the time when i watch a film i want funny,or happy or weird. So as far as i am concerned this film hits the spot, well done.

Great film. Introduces us to some characters that films generally ignore or caricatures. Honestly and simply gives us a different angle on LGBT from the normal movie fare. It feels a lot like watch a play at a repertory theatre - it the best possible sense. Cosy and intimate. However I bought the dvd copy to replace a VHS copy and the dvd suffered from some quality issues in that it went a bit grainy at times - but if you buy it cheap then it is well worth a watch and you will re-watch it time and time again.

A 'must see' for all young lesbians everywhere
This was the first openly lesbian film I ever saw and it's still one of my all time favourites. Will never tire of the body paint scene and will never stop smiling about the mothers' 'discovery'. Every young lesbian should see this film.

Sweet, hilarious, and quirky, this very Canadian and queer story(-ies) of coming out, finding love, dealing with homophobia, navigating a relationship, and family acceptance... There are serious subjects carefully navigated, but also truly heartwarming and very funny moments that have brought me back to watch this several times. I don't want to give away any of it, so I'm intentionally not referring to specific plot developments... Which is hard because I'd love to! The cast is wonderful, and I am always especially touched by Peter Outerbridge's performance as Judy, and the hysterical antics of the main character's conservative mom, Lila, played by Wendy Crewson. Both set and filmed in Vancouver BC, largely around the locally well-known for its diverse Commercial Drive area, this film captures a mood at the end of the 90s in British Columbia, Canada, including a plot point about Canada Customs seizing queer erotica at the border under our "obscenity" laws, which was taken from the very real struggle IRL Vancouver LGBTQI+ bookstore Little Sister's spent years waging against the federal government. I have just noticed that 2019 marks the 20th anniversary of this endearing indie film. Time to have a rewatch and enjoy the sweet magic once again.
