I bought this book as a gift for my adult daughter, knowing that she would gain a lot from it. I have had my own copy of this outstanding book for a couple of years, now, and know how much excellent information is held within it's pages. There is so much to learn about the many aspects of the craft, and a great deal of that learning can be helped along by this book. I find myself returning to it often, to check correspondences/uses of herbs or crystals, or check the best time for a particular type of working. I've used a number of the spells in this book, with good outcomes. That being said, not all of these spells should be used - but the author, Judika Illes, makes sure to warn the reader of those not to use, and why! I really like that coverage is given to different traditions including some (though, by no means all) Voodoo/Hoodoo practices, which is a fascinating area. It is possible to read this book from cover to cover, but I find looking at a particular area is probably the best way to enjoy it. I hope my daughter gets the same 'buzz' from this book as I've had and that she, like me, returns to it often, finding helpful ways forward within it's pages. Blessed be!

I love this book

This is a beautifully presented and substantial book; well laid out with a helpfully designed table of contents; thus allowing easy navigation through the potentially long-winded variety of entries. Packed full of interesting and practical information in an accessible form. Easy to flick to the appropriate section for inspiration purporting to a wide variety of traditional spellwork requirements; with tidbits ranging from the potentially sympathetic and useful to the downright mean in terms of intent! It is laid out by chapter, each chapter relating to a particular requirement, i.e. Protection, Divination, Cleansing etc. With an initial section giving a brief explanation of how spells can work, why they might be utilised, and the obligatory warnings/reminders that the information is to be taken firmly in context. Nothing hugely in depth, but it does round the book off into a more cohesive work. Many of the spells listed are fairly brief, but there are a lot of variations and choices included. In most cases, the ingredients are clearly listed, with any pre-made parts referred back to their own recipes if provided elsewhere in the book. Where the book causes confusion with an unfamiliar herb or whatnot, a sensible search online can readily supplement and provide useful context. As a handy tome for your magickal library it's well worth the price, even if a lot of the examples listed aren't necessarily adviseable as written; it is lovely to have a source of extra correspondences and ideas for one's own forays into the art and history of spellcraft. After all, the most powerful workings one might do are individually tailored and based upon what has been learned from the past and is required in the present, not carbon copies of the work of another. So, make yourself a cup of tea and curl up for a wee read, if you so desire! It's up to the individual how seriously to take these things; but personally I find it an interesting book to have on the shelf; and it didn't break the bank.

This is a really fascinating book; whichever way you look at it, it's been written with great care and attention. First up, don't look at this 1100 + paged tome as filled to the brim of black and white magic spells to try at home for any issue. Of course it has some spells, but it also couples that with a history of magic - and practices - over the ages; from Celtic, Egyptian, African , South American and all points of the world, author Judika Illes has certainly put in the time... It covers the basics of magic and the practices and discusses different spells for anything from Animal spells to Youth spells, and all points in between - love spells, money spells, luck spells, healing spells etc. A great read and a great book for the aspiring person interested in 'The Craft'.... Buy and enjoy it.....

I myself don't believe "spells" work! I refer to it as mumbo jumbo lol, however, i have a friend who seems obsessed that her neighbours are cursing her and i loaned her 6 books relating to witchcraft and spells, being a previous bookseller from home. She asked me if i knew of any spells as she believes she is a victim of witchcraft! lol. As she is an avid reader of many subjects, i decided to buy her this book for her birthday this coming May, and i think she will be delighted as she goes through 5000 spells lol he he (to get revenge?) Being serious now! The book was well worth it's money, because it contains over 1000 pages, nice quality, would have been superb if the cover had been black and gold or black with red metallic letters? As it is the green and white cover reminds me of Greenpeace? lol. However, i am sure my friend who originates from St. Lucia, and are very superstitious people has many happy hours "concocting her spells" lol. I myself feel it safer to continue my crystal jewellery and writing! lol. Rosina Lock x

I received the book this morning, upon opening, I noticed it wasn’t a hardback, even though I’d selected that option at time of adding to my basket. The book was damaged, which is really annoying - I’m fussy though, I like corners and pages to be pristine - I have added the photos. Even though I didn’t get off to a good start, Amazon did their best to resolve this for me. The book itself actually feels really nice to handle, I think it would actually be easier than a hardback. I sat with the book in my lap and it moulded to my shape, the pages stayed where they were meant to..I didn’t have to hold them down. I am really looking forward to getting to know this book. It’s well laid out and easy to understand. I’d definitely recommend this book 😊

This book is fabulous, it has a mixture of spells. It's good to read the introduction pages as it is full of wise information. Think of it as a cookbook with recipes, some you will like and others not so much.

This book is like wow! With every page. The Encyclopaedia of 5000 Spells is an impressive collection and captivating.

Ce livre est épais comme un dictionnaire, et contient plus de 5000 rituels, charmes, et sortilèges divers. Non content de fournir des recettes pour tous les besoins de la vie (soins, divination, rêves, amour, chance, protection......), ce livre donne aussi les formules pour confectionner ses propres huiles, encens, et eaux chargées. L'auteur ne se contente pas de dresser une bête liste de rituels. Au contraire, pour chaque chapitre, des explications détaillées sont données sur l'origine d'un sort, sur le pourquoi d'une coutume, etc. Les rituels du monde entier sont ainsi facile à comprendre dans leur contexte d'origine. Bien que le livre soit écrit dans un anglais simple, un bon dictionnaire est recommandé pour ne pas faire de confusions parmi les plantes. Ainsi, "mugwort" et "wormwood" désignent deux plantes voisines, mais se traduisent tous les deux par "armoise". Vérifiez les noms latins en cas de doute !

I haven't read it yet but this book is simply impressive. It seems to be a collection of all existing spells (ok this is an exaggeration but it has a spell for everything!). Interesting find!
