This is a good microscope to learn with. We looked at a basil leaf that had a bit of cobweb on it and quickly found a caterpillar looking critter on it that you couldn't see with the naked eye. Needless to say, the whole family is in awe. Little thing was just munching away with his weird-like mouth appendages. Never eating unwashed food from the garden again. We also looked at a drop of blood and you can see the blood cells, super cool. The kids have been playing with this thing for hours and the only thing that ever holds their attention this long is gaming or YouTube. Definitely one of the best birthday presents I've ever purchased and worth the $50. Comes with everything you need to get started.

Great microscope!
This was purchased as a gift for my two granddaughters. It is excellent quality and comes with lots of specimen slides to grab their attention! They are both interested in science and I’m hoping this will encourage them.

It's an OK beginner set
I haven't had a microscope in a long time, and I guess they don't make em like they used to? The good: it comes in a foam compartment soft carrying case, excellent to keep it safe when not in use. The light options are great, with both a top light shining down on the subject, and an underside, shining up through slides and translucent items. The light has a dimmer knob to avoid blinding yourself. I don't have need of the color filters, but it changes the color of the light on your sample. It comes with a box of samples, and two more of empty slides and mounting squares so you can make your own. The first thing I did was look at the fibers of a piece of tissue wrapping paper that came in the carrying case. The platform can be moved in a variety of ways while examining objects, and gives you pretty fine control. The bad: The instructions, are kind of awful. They reference parts that do not exist, and the diagrams are incomplete. The thing that actually is annoying is that the eyepieces do not secure in the microscope. You just drop them in the tube where they sit loosely. You're constantly trying to hold them still while looking through them and focusing. The worst of these is the phone mount, which in turn flops loosely on the loose eyepiece. My old one had eye pieces that screwed in securely. I feel like I could use a third hand to hold all the loose parts from moving around.

Very good performance for the money.
This is a great starter microscope package. The included 10x and 25x eyepieces are comfortable and easy to look through. Both eyepieces in combination with any of the objectives produce reasonably sharp, clear focus. There is some chromatic aberration - especially with the included 2x barlow, but that's expected at this price point. Central focus is sharp and clear. The main issue with this microscope is the focus travel range of the stage. If you put anything thicker than say, 3/16" on the stage, it's not going to be able to come to focus. So simply putting a random object on the stage to be illuminated from the top light is not something this microscope is capable of showing you, which is too bad since a kid would be naturally curious about putting objects on the stage to magnify. It basically can ONLY look at slides, which is the biggest limitation with this microscope. The included specimens are ok. They require a mix of backlight and top light to see them. The included dimmer on the backlight is excellent. Backlight is a lot brighter than top light. The top light is probably a little too dim, and it also is incompatible with the 40x objective since the objective blocks the light and casts a shadow on the specimen. Optics are glass and body is metal. Stage is plastic. The micro adjust on the stage is a nice touch at this price point. Its smooth and works very well. You'll probably want to get an extra set of prepared slides to go with this purchase. For the money, it's a solid buy. I compared it with another cheaper model and this one stays, the other goes back.

Surprising
For the price, I cannot complain. In fact, far from it as my first slide viewed through this microscope was observing a rotifer. Magnification distortion seems fairly minimal (around endges) and there was one spec on the larger magnification lense. Its likely a flake or chip, but for the work I do, its fine. I wont even dock it a star just for that, considering the price, and the fact that it comes with slides, covers, even pipette and swabs. Very good deal.

Great choice for kids 5+
I tried a couple of kid's microscopes and was very disappointed with the quality. I bought this for my 5-year-old grandson. He loves it. If you; 've never used a microscope before, look online about how to set up the lenses because the instructions are not great. Other than that, it's excellent quality with a sturdy metal body, quality lenses, glass slides, and a great protective case. This will last him all through high school.

good but not perfect
Apart from the one I've touched in school 20 years ago, this is my first microscope and it's quite ok for my basic curiosity needs. Magnification is surprisingly good when you combine the WF25X, the 2X and the yellow or blue objectives. Illumination could be a lot better though, as LEDs are rather weak for anything less than transparent, and the top LED becomes unusable on higher magnifications as it gets blocked by lowering/refocusing the objective. So I often use my own mini flashlight (and I plan to build a flexible little arm to hold a button-cell LED at any angle I need). The adjustable table (positioning) is a great feature, but THIS ONE needs redesigning, as half the range of the Y axis is wasted by extending a whole inch OVER the objective... Finally, the power cable is a ridiculous and useless 3ft long wire -.- I'm throwing 3 AA's at it for now, but this is 2025 and I would expect to have some basic type-C rechargeable LED system instead!? Or at least a 6ft+ long cable?! Other than that, the actual optics are IMO good enough for a basic/beginner microscope, and the overall thing is quite usable once you learn to work around/with its imperfections. --- Some hints - you can get much better control over the focus by working both knobs at the same time, with both hands. If the eyepieces are jiggling while inside their receptacles, just put a small patch of painter's tape around the outside of the eyepiece (the part that slides 'inside'), till there's no more play. I did that on both the 2X and WF25X. Don't forget to cover the eyepiece or the holes at all times when unused. And never blow with your mouth inside to clean dust/dirt, use an air can instead and basic caution.

Very fun little microscope for kids!
