Handbook for Sound Engineers is the most comprehensive reference available for audio engineers. All audio topics are explored: if you work on anything related to audio you should not be without this book! The 4th edition of this trusted reference has been updated to reflect changes in the industry since the publication of the 3rd edition in 2002 -- including new technologies like software-based recording systems such as Pro Tools and Sound Forge; digital recording using MP3, wave files and others; mobile audio devices such as iPods and MP3 players. Over 40 topics are covered and written by many of the top professionals for their area in the field, including Glen Ballou on interpretation systems, intercoms, assistive listening, and image projection; Ken Pohlmann on compact discs and DVDs; David Miles Huber on MIDI; Dr. Eugene Patronis on amplifier design and outdoor sound systems; Bill Whitlock on audio transformers and preamplifiers; Pat Brown on fundamentals and gain structures; Ray Rayburn on virtual systems and digital interfacing; and Dr. Wolfgang Ahnert on computer-aided sound system design and acoustics for concert halls. Review: Engineering knowledge by the pound - Weighing in at over 6.5 pounds, his text pretty much defines the word, "tome." This text also goes a long way to defining, "comprehensive," answering many questions in audio engineering and general electrical engineering. I appreciate the straight forward approach keeping math manageable, avoiding getting bogged down in calculus. The text works to give answers the obvious question, "how?," but also takes time to answer, "why?" I have worked in electrical engineering for over 30 years, and I have found this text has taught me new relevant information on power supplies, amplifiers, wiring and safety that isn't just for audio professionals. My field is not expressly audio, but I found the chapters on psycho acoustics, microphones, loudspeakers, etc. enlightening. There is a newer 5th edition, however this 4th edition probably has almost everything you'll need. This book is a good value for the money and would be a good addition to the desks of audio professionals and electrical engineers. Review: Money Well Spent - As long as you are aware that this is a highly technical book, you will really enjoy it. It is the best book I have seen for learning the basics of running live, or for that matter, studio sound. This will answer the questions you may have that old timers can't answer - why do you do that? Often times they do from instinct the things in this book, because they work, but cannot explain why they work. This is money well spent. An excellent resource.

Great Book on Audio
This book is very comprehensive. Hard to understand if you don't have a background in audio. Don't get if you are a beginner. If you do have background in aidio this book introduces great views on a multitude of topics. Great read. Warning though reads like a textbook.

The holy book for all audio engineers
Ordering this book and spend the time waiting for it to come was worth every single seconds and penny of it. It gives a full detailed information of anything that audio engineers needs to know. I would recommend every single audio engineer to buy one of these book as it will solve all your problems and will give you information that you need to know.

Dense
Heavy on science, not filler. Reads like a textbook, not a novel. At 1700 pages this thing has more information than I can process in a month.

The Bible
This isn't a book to read for pleasure. This is several books in one, all reference and all jam packed full of information. It's a little dry, but then this book is a tool, not something created for pleasure or to be pleasurable. If you need reference regarding any aspect of audio, it is here. Nothing esoteric, pure data and information. Fantastic at what it was written for.

Omnicomprensivo

Engineers
It's a really good handbook for sound engineers, but all the electronic/computer engineers interested to audio world. The only problem is the price!
