These lights actually have a switch. For whatever reason, lots of similar products do not have a manual switch. They only work via the electronic sensor. That can be a pain depending on where you need to place your night lights. The switch on this product has three settings: OFF, ON, and AUTO. The automatic setting uses an electronic sensor. It turns on the light and adjusts brightness a little based on how much environmental light it senses. The sensor on these is pretty good. It does a better job and is less finicky than most other ones I've tried. I've noticed that the red model is much brighter in "on" mode than it ever gets in automatic. This has actually been helpful because it lets me fine-tune the lighting a little. This difference is far smaller on the amber models. The red is really nice. While some people thing of "red" as angry or hellish or whatever; it's actually quite relaxing. Red is the lowest-energy visible light. It does not prompt your body to produce wakeful hormones the way other colors of light can. (Blue is the worst for this.) Versus other forms of light, this won't rob as much from your night vision either. The red night lights are ideal for seeing where you are going, not bumping into things, etc. Choose these for winding down and nocturnal navigation. Just be aware that red light is not good for color recognition. For reasons you can imagine on your own, amber is a better choice for the bathroom. The amber lights are pretty but do seem brighter than the reds. They aren't disruptive like cool white or blue light. They're better than the warmest "normal" lighting (2700K). They're just not as good as red for those benefits mentioned above. Choose amber for a relaxing midnight trip to the bathroom or quietly making a midnight snack in the kitchen.

I’ve bought quite a few night lights as I just recently successfully potty trained my child. The biggest issue we run into is at night she will wake up to go potty.. she’s tripped over her baby dolls, blocks, you name it. So I bought a couple of night lights.. they just wasn’t exactly what we was looking for. I then searched on amazon and ran across this one, and decided to give it a go. So far it’s been lovely. I absolutely love the fact that it has a auto selection (as well as on, and off) this is easily my favorite part about this night light. It’s not running all day, and I don’t have to remember to turn it off and on. As a mother of two kids my mind doesn’t always remember. It’s bright enough to see where your going, but not bright enough to wake you up completely (we got the yellow color). Since receiving this we haven’t had any more falls or cries early in the morning. The package comes with 2 night lights, they seem to be very well made. I was honestly impressed because they weren’t to expensive. The design is functional and modern which I also like. It’s not a child design like most. It also doesn’t get hot like most night lights I’ve purchased. Which is a HUGE plus with a almost 3 year old that is fascinated by anything and everything. I’ve had it running all night and it’s not even the slightest bit warm so that is wonderful. Honestly if you need a night light and don’t like the normal ones I’d go this route. I’m very pleased with my purchase and will be purchasing another set.

While fairly unattractive, these true red task lights are quite bright compared to several competitors, making them great for out of sight areas like closets and laundry rooms. I found them uncomfortably bright for use in areas where they would be at eye level, and with no brightness adjustment slider, they are WAY too bright for use overnight as a nightlight while sleeping.

We bought these night lights because our kids were taking a hour+ to fall asleep at night. I was hoping a red light would make a difference and it did! However, the light is... a bit creepy. We started using them a few days before Valentine’s Day and I tried telling our kids they were love night lights because they thought the lights were so ... RED. That kinda worked. My stepmom saw them and said they looked like the gates of Hell. Now that she’s said that, I can’t disagree. The kids don’t mind the lights now but if I had it to do over again, I would’ve ordered the orange/amber lights. As for the lights being too bright as some reviewers stated, I disagree. They aren’t bright enough to read by but bright enough if a scared kiddo wakes up in the night, they won’t break their neck walking around a dark room littered with hazards (toys). I can see a red glow from their rooms from the outside at night and if I didn’t know better, I’d guess they slept with a lava lamp on.

I bought two brands of red night lights over a year ago. The other brand was a little cheaper and more purely red, but these are more versatile because they can be turned off. The other ones, which only have an auto feature are fine for sunny locations, but I prefer these for dark locations because I don't want them to be on all the time. For bathrooms whose doors are closed or where the outlet wall is shaded during the day, the ones which do not have an active on-off switch stay on all day. LEDs never last as long as advertised, but just to scale their potential life, consider that 10,000 hours is roughly 416 24-hour days, so if you can turn an LED light off during the day, whatever the lifespan is, only having it on at night should allow it to last 3x longer. These actually throw enough light that if they are within a few feet of the toilet you don't need to turn the bathroom light on at night. Good product.

I love the option of it being automatic and also to be kept on constantly it also has an off switch too. Love that it ajusts to the surrounds as it gets darker and lighter outside or within the room itself with the automatic option. Stays cool to the touch doesn't overheat very happy about that, the red light has a calming effect on My Daughter it seems to deffinally be helping Her fall asleep faster, is bright enough to see the whole room but not so bright that it awakes You or keeps You awake at all, the look of it can match any room You have and blends in with the whole look of the bedroom You child has. Has a modern feel to it which is a plus. Overall My Daughter sleeps more soundly with it and helps Her fall asleep faster it's deffinally a great product for sleep for little ones

Great nightlights that you can actually sleep with. I have a difficult time sleeping and a very difficult time with bright lights. As part of good sleep hygiene I avoid bright and as much light as possible after dark and before bed. These lights are perfect for that. They provide enough light to see by without jarring the eyes, brain, and mind by flicking on a white light. The automatic timer is awesome because they come on and turn off appropriately. I have one by my bed and one in the bathroom. Definitely purchasing more. The style is quite nice as well; kind of modern space ship looking but very pleasing at least to my eye. They are unobtrusive and barely noticeable when not on. Highly recommended.

Your mileage may vary--you simply may not care how bright they are regardless of biological impact. However, as a foster parent, it is critical that I get every little detail of the environment right in a set-it-and-forget-it kind of way so that day to day with the kiddos is less stressful and more enjoyable. Getting the environment right means the everyone gets better sleep and can spend more time connecting and socializing. It also means that the children stand a better chance of excelling in school, and adults perform better at their jobs (even if that's running the home). I post this review in hopes that it is helpful to everyone because everyone should be able to sleep well even after late night disturbances. Sleep deprivation, after all, is the greatest factor contributing to mental illness and cognitive decline--more powerful even than genetic predisposition. The whole purpose of using a red nightlight is to prevent stimulation of the photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (pRGC) and the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN, an optically triggered portion of the hypothalamus--basically the functional control center of the brain, and thus your whole biology). The presence of the red light encourages production of melatonin, calms the aforementioned SCN, and sleepiness and calming ensue. However, if the optical nerves transmit light signals stronger than that stimulated by starlight, the SCN comes online and so even if you do go back to sleep, the brain is partially awake while the body sleeps--defeating the primary purpose of sleep. I do like the large surface area of the light emitting portion of the nightlight. It casts a fairly soft glow for a long distance allowing the nightlight to illuminate a large area. That said, the intensity of the individual LED's is too bright. I have managed to 3D print a white reflector in front of the sensor which halves the light output and shields the eyes from viewing the LED's in line-of-site, turning this into an excellent device, but the product shouldn't be engineered in a way that such intervention is required. I do want to give praise, however, because the product quality is excellent and the manufacturing tolerances and performance were consistent across all eight units I purchased. I would not buy this again, and I am currently looking for a better alternative.
