In recent times, the coconut-flavoured cuisine of the Malayalis has gained immense popularity. Appam and Istoo, Avial and Olan, Irachi Biryani and Pathiri, all these and more are now served in restaurants and homes all over India. As the author explains in his introduction to the book, the ancient association of food with religion, the influence of foreign trade and the intermingling of different communities have all combined to make Kerala cuisine what it is today. Interestingly, even though a variety of spices grow literally in their backyards, Malayalis abstain from an overpowering use of these, rendering their cuisine different from other Asian cuisines. Instead, there is a range of delicately spiced dishes, harmoniously balanced and simple to prepare, neither too rich nor too bland, and always delicious. The recipes in this volume cover the entire range of vegetables, meat, seafood, pickles, sweets and snacks, served both as daily fare and as part of the sadya on festive occasions, taking in the specialities of the different regions and communities of the state. Review: An excellent cookbook - The value of this excellent cookbook lies in the fact of its covering the cuisine of the many different cultures that makes Kerala food so widely appreciated. Mr Kannampilly's pleasure in the culinary history of his home state and obvious appreciation of flavour shines through the recipes which are clearly laid out for even the most inexperienced cook. A great buy Review: Must Have - This is book well written by Vijayan Kannampilly. I tried out a few recipies and they were just mind blowing! i love the background the book gives about the cuisine from kerala. The book is very balanced recipe wise and has Veg/Non-Veg/Desserts from the Gods own country. I would have given 5 stars if this book had some Pictures of dishes. This has none and is fully black and white! but nevertheless its a must have cookbook!

Beautiful content
I'm so impressed. So honest and well intended- latter is equally important because it gives you a feeling that author goes out of his way to give you whatever means he has to ensure you to succeed in your culinary experiments. He hasn't held back and that can't be said of 'most' of the food writers out there. It may or may not have the best recipes but this surely is an excellent start- an introduction to the culinary world of Kerala and a sneak peak into its culture and history. 5/5 P.S: it doesn't have photographs. So if that's what you have in mind, you may wanna skip

Kerala dishes malayali cooking veg non veg
I am a Malayali but have never stayed in Kerala. All our vacations were spent with our grandparents in Kerala. So whatever I remember and cook comes from there. Now granny has passed away but the book makes me feel all these recipes have been passed down from her to me. Thanks for the deja vu Mr Vijayan.

Great book!
This is the first book on Kerala Cooking that I have purchased. I really like the whole presentation that the author has put out. The best part was I got it at a really good price with free shipping from Amazon.in and that just made me grab the book. I have so far tried couple of recipes and all of them have come out perfect. Even a non Keralite should not have any trouble accessing the cuisine as the recipes are written out well and the book is written extensively. I really enjoyed it and would suggest it to everyone who wants to prepare Kerala dishes.

Exceeded expectations
This books is all you need and much much more about the beautiful cuisine of Kerala. It is an accurate and insightful representation of South Indian food and provides a vast array of knowledge on much more than just recipes. I have learnt about the history of food, the religious and cultural influences of Kerala cuisine and am left feeling utter inspired and my excitement for food has been reignited by this book. If I could give 6 stars I would. I am utterly gobsmacked by the low price in comparison to the content quality. This is a must buy for any Indian food fanatic however, for a novice cook, the lingo (Malayalam mostly) can be a little intimidating and the drastic differences between the British favourite North Indian dishes to what is presented in this book definitely needs a build up. However for the right person this book is a must need and is by far one of the best cookbooks I own. I couldn’t praise it highly enough.

I LOVE THIS!
It ties into my favourite Indian Grocery Store online. I shopped here when I was cooking from three Indian ladies' blogs as their ingredients were fresh and authentic. NOW this book completes my Indian cooking repertoire as the recipes call for many rare and esoteric spices and additions, some from Ayurvedic medicine. Great for taste, great for health and many words of wisdom, This is a true find!

Enjoy it!
I bought it to gift it to my brother in law. He really likes it and enjoys the recipe collection. We tried recipes together, it is clearly written and easy to understand. The amount of hot spices could be adjusted for individuals taste.
